the spits - lp V

THE SPITS play dirty fun garage punk........little known to the masses, but a highly respected band in the scene.....THE SPITS are a band you need to know about if you love lo-fi punk rock........  they have a series of "untitled" lps out on dirtnap, slovenly, nickel & dime, p trash and now IN THE RED, who has just released their fifth proper studio album.........

THE SPITS fit right in on IN THE RED records and here's what the label had to say......
Everyone’s favorite space-age mutant skate punks are back with their long awaited fifth album (self-titled as were the previous four) and and it does not disappoint. Twelve new action-packed songs of apocalyptic fuzzed-out over driven madness.  The Spits are already as ingrained in modern punk music as possible, yet still manage to devour the rip-offs and influence the youth of today without even looking like they're trying. Going strong now for over fifteen years, smashing the windows and tearing down the walls of our minds every time they roll through town, these truly vicious visionaries have cooked punk down to its most powerful base form, crawling like Neanderthals through the muck, and creating a flaming trail of hits that'll take quite a fit of dementia to ever forget. A perfect distillation of punk's original open-ended weirdness, and modern music's serrated salvation, The Spits have proven themselves to be no one to fuck with, over and over again. True headliners, never to be followed and for good reason....The Spits have been setting the bar high, throughout the Midwest, and soon after, the world over. With an ingenious amalgamation of DEVO's early synth work in tandem with the absolute best Thug-Punk grunt the Ramones could ever maliciously muster, The Spits never try to reinvent anything, they just rip it's head off and drive it home time and time again.  They've always been one of the most original bands of the twenty-first century, yet it never really seemed like they weren't doing anything too experimental, save their signature, yet refreshingly just-ahead-of-their-time, synth/drum machine noise they forced the fickle punk crowds to gladly swallow. When we finally caught wind of them, the demonic void that they filled was utterly too much to handle, and hence became the number one band everyone wanted to see....It was that pre-information overload-type of underground music mystery that just gets all the endorphins rushing. I mean, were they even real? And the way their throbbingly addictive songs just drip like sticky tar out of the speakers, their guitars that sound like food processors seemed to dull all our senses, just at the same time that the impeccable lyrics invigorate us beyond belief.   Possibly one of the only modern bands to have several of their songs being covered by their contemporaries, The Spits have already done so much, but still have so much more to come, as they continue to influence anyone with a penchant for irresistible punk music, played like there's nothing to lose.
In The Red records couldn’t be happier or prouder to finally have the Spits as part of their roster!!
comparisons to the mummies, supercharger, ramones and the misfits are appropriate.......but for you punk rockers, all you need to know if that the SPITS ARE A MUST HAVE......

wax idols - no future

Wax Idols Hemlock-6
this spring i was swooning over this little known band with their first single on HOZAC, but now the WAX IDOLS are more than that obscure garage pop/punk band i wrote about months ago.......they're on the verge of being everyone's favorite new band........ forget best coast or the vivian girls......this is some seriously good rock n roll that all the kids should know about... maybe the wax idols will follow the dum dum girls path from hozac to subpop... the wax idols are that good......  here's what HOZAC records has to say......
The San Francisco Bay area’s most promising breakout, and formidable female-fronted pop wonders are not who you may already believe or expect. Lead by the enigmatically agitated Heather Fortune (ex-Hunx & His Punx, formerly of the Bare Wires, and currently a member of CastleFace Records’ Blasted Canyons), Wax Idols straddle the line between ripping tough/tender post-punk/goth-pop, and irresistibly anthemic indie rock hooks, somewhat like Joan Jett would sound like tearing through Best Coast with a chainsaw or if Mary Monday had been a member of Wire. Your curiosity may have already been piqued from their unabashed debut 7″ “All Too Human,” released on Hozac earlier this year, but it’s hard to imagine anyone being ready for an LP of this caliber, bursting at the seams with hits for all seasons, and effortlessly blurring the lines between viciously beautiful temperance and an unwavering, attitude-soaked attack on your comfort zone. With an arsenal of songs that range from chest-pounding melodic punk screamers, to tense-yet-tumultuous tracks of sadness overcome with bombastic pop precision, ‘No Future’ is one of the most impressive LPs we’ve had the pleasure of releasing, and one we’re sure will go far. Fortune’s uniquely surly-yet-sultry voice has such an lasting impact, it seamlessly traces the gamut of human emotions back & forth from the unhinged heights to the inescapable doldrums, all tied up in perfect blasts of modern pop/post-punk subdued simplicity that are as upfront and immediate as any of of their legendary influences.

tyvek - fast metabolism

TYVEK's lp NOTHING FITS was one of my top albums of last year...so i wish they had another new record coming in 2011.....

but instead we get their LIVE AT THIRD MAN lp and a repress of the CDR-only FAST METABOLISM..... originally only a tour ep, that WHATS YR RUPTURE helped press up......

the vinyl reissue contains some songs you might have already in yr collection, along with some hard to find demo and singles.....  but i can tell you from listening to this many times, it's worth getting on yr actual turntable.......

TYVEK's art damaged FALL meets the STOOGES noise punk is some of the best lo-fi rock n roll being played anywhere right now.....

M'LADY released the lp late this summer and as far as i know only GONER RECORDS has copies, so act quick before its gone.....

but of course you can have those invisible mp3s for free.....
so click here to grab FAST METABOLISM

the king khan experience - s/t ep

KING KHAN is back.....

nope it's not with another king khan & bbq record, not yet at least.

nope, it's not another king khan & the shrines lp.... which will hopefully be soon.....

and nope there's no the spaceshits or the black jaspers reunions....KING KHAN has a brand new exciting and mysterious group of garage rock destroyers aptly named, THE KING KHAN EXPERIENCE.....

maybe his summer of jamming with GRIS GRIS was the inspiration, but this is nine songs of rowdy, soulful garage psych that you need to have right now.....and thanks to scion, you can grab it for free, legitimately...

SO CLICK HERE TO GRAB THE NEW KING KHAN EXPERIENCE EP for FREE

drunk pixels - double dagger

double dagger is no more..... sad but true....  but their short farewell tour was more fun than i've had in quite some time, maybe since black lips/night beats lolla after party...

i hope you were lucky enough to witness one of these last DOUBLE DAGGER shows, but if not watch their last night in chicago @ treasure town, our city's best and most dirty rock n roll warehouse space.......

and if you watch carefully you might see me moshing around in the crowd, screaming the lyrics.....  double dagger might be the last "hardcore" band i like.......

radar eyes - s/t debut on HOZAC

RADAR EYES are one of the chicago scene's best kept secrets...at least until now.

HOZAC RECORDS just released a new seven inch by RADAR EYES, and their debut full length LP should be out by christmas.....(also on hozac).

dreamy shoegaze-influenced garage pop....RADAR EYES name check spacemen 3, the ramones, the velvets and jesus & mary chain as their inspiration, but i'd also add SONIC YOUTH, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, DINOSAUR JR and GALAXIE 500 to their list.....

anyway, radar eyes could be yr new favorite band, i see them almost every time i get the chance......

JC SATAN - hell death samba

when SLOVENLY RECORDS gets ready to release another full length, i get excited..... lately they've released some gems from a couple of obscure european bands (ie, thee oops, acid baby jesus), and their newest release keeps that ball rolling.........

JC SATAN plays dark heavy prog/psych influenced garage rock.....noisy reverb drenched rockers mixed with jangly pop ballads.....

put them in the same camp as CHEVEU, FEELING OF LOVE and LIMINANAS.....the european garage scene is not just rehashing old american rock cliches, they're making their own quite strange, but good brand of garage rock.....and JC SATAN is just another example of the creativity happening there........

i think their new lp HELL DEATH SAMBA is going to catch some ears.....its got my attention already....

here's what SLOVENLY had to say about the new JC SATAN lp...
a beast of a sophomore slam from our beloved European juvenile delinquents J.C. SATAN. Hell Death Samba, like their previous opus Sick of Love, is a beautifully morose, sonic ode to the days of wine and dead roses, effortlessly melding goth with garage & heavy psych, filtered through a titanic pile of noise. This latest effort sees more of lyricist PAULA S.'s vocals spotlighted in various structures from cranky twisters to bouncy tropicalia, like a crack pipe full of indy-rock with the devils pulse and a witch's cackle. Tricked out with a wealth of moods from huge punk rave-ups to underwater pop art dreamscapes, we've been simultaneously blessed & cursed with another provocative slab: proof that this demented crew of French and Italian pranksters are no one-trick-poodles.

stream the entire album below........ and go buy it at yr local record store.  OUT NOW!

hell shovel - sonar elastici

HELL SHOVEL is from fertile garage rock scene of MONTREAL.....a side project comprised of members from DEMONS CLAWS and KING KHAN'S SHRINES, but unlike many of their garage rock peers, HELL SHOVEL dives deeper into hazy psych rock and with good results......

reminds me of LOVE, CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN, the later more druggy SEEDS.....and perhaps the weirdness of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, or maybe the FUGS....  much more far out than DEMONS CLAWS, but that's what side projects are for right?......

i think i've listened to the song BLOW HOLES about twenty times today......

very recommended.

one out of print seven inch and a new LP pictured above... the album SONAR ELASTICI is limited to 200 copies and was pressed in europe, so if you see any HELL SHOVEL records buy them......and resell them to me........

watch below......
and listen via bandcamp further down.....(where the lp is also available for digital purchase......)

sex church - growing over

sex church

i was able to see SEX CHURCH last night and they were even more amazing then i expected.

their new record GROWING OVER, just released on LOAD RECORDS, is quite the step up from 6 SONGS, their previous effort.......   in yer face psych bent garage influenced post punk....... everytime i listen to their i hear different influences.....the wipers, the fall, early husker du, spacemen 3, jesus and mary chain, television, 13th floor elevators...... this is some dark melodic reverb heavy fun you need to have.....

so click here to grab GROWING OVER

and see them somewhere near you.......

dead farmers - go home

highly recommended.......

thee cormans - halloween record w/ sound effects

THEE CORMANS are to surf music what the MUMMIES are to garage rock.....  in other words, BUDGET ROCK mayhem.....

they play fuzzed up killer surf/garage/punk tunes filtered through b-movie horror film creepiness.......

thee cormans keep the instrumental surf/biker rock tradition alive for the likes of dick dale, dave allan & the arrows and the ventures....but more in the vein of MAN OR ASTROMAN or UNTAMED YOUTH......   except dirtier, crazier and louder...the won't fall asleep until the sun rises kinda madness....  kinda like THE CRAMPS, thee cormans are just that killer..... and the halloween record is probably close to being my favorite surf record of all time......

this lp could've been on CRYPT back in the day... but THEE CORMANS have found an appropriate fan in LARRY from IN THE RED, who rightly decided we all needed this record for our spooky october parties this year.......

highly recommended....

GO BUY THIS NOW IF YOU LIKE IT......super limited release.....and the first couple hundred are on glow in the dark vinyl.....

watch below......

moon duo - horror tour ep

gotta love MOON DUO.....  always much more than a side project of WOODEN SHJIPS......their krautrock meets garage psych rock n roll is always a favorite.......

and now they just released a HALLOWEEN THEMED TOUR ep....... apparently inspired by an old book of spells.....  this is a fun dark spooky record........ which you can grab here.....

or you can buy it from SOUTERRAIN TRANSMISSIONS which will be releasing october 31st, appropriately.....  this is limited to 1000 copies so don't sleep on it too long.........

the horror tour ep is just enough to hold me over until the next lp drops.....  but i can't get enough of them.......

total control - henge beat

AUSTRALIA keeps my turntable real happy these days.....  and TOTAL CONTROL is another band from that scene you gotta check out.....

synth post punk meets garage rock with a heavy krautrock influence that should be filed away somewhere near the KILLED BY DEATH influenced punk section at yr local record shop.......

their new lp HENGE BEAT is a sure shot for one of the best albums of the year.......  and since the band shares members with UV RACE and EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING, that's really no surprise......

TOTAL CONTROL is going on a killer fall tour with THE OH SEES..... (dates listed here in a previous post) and CASTLEFACE RECORDS is putting out an awesome tour split 12 inch of both bands which is also highly recommended......

i want TOTAL CONTROL to be yr favorite new band.....

so click here to download HENGE BEAT (out on IRON LUNG records)

and listen/watch below.....

dum dum girls - only in dreams

The Dum Dum Girls

after an awesome debut lp split released on sub pop and hozac and a little fuzz pop banger of an ep earlier this year, the DUM DUM GIRLS return with another catchy and more mature lp,  ONLY IN DREAMS.......

i thought perhaps they would fall victim to the hype machine and release a second album that would cater way too much toward the indie pop devouring mainstream audience....  i kinda fell off the SMITH WESTERNS, CROCODILES and VIVIAN GIRLS bandwagon cause of that.....but the DUM DUM GIRLS continue on with their RAMONES loving, PHIL SPECTOR worshipping girl group meets indie / punk vibe....... this is a catchy, well written record.....

i gotta say i'm a sucker for them, not sure why..... but if you wanna check it out....  click for ONLY IN DREAMS...

watch below......

james arthur manhunt - s/t (2010)

James Arthur was the guitarist and architect behind a bunch of the noisiest, nastiest garage bands of the last couple of decades: Fireworks, Necessary Evils, A Feast of Snakes, Golden Boys. He's been holed up in a shack in the wilds of Texas the last few years, slowly cataloguing on his four track the evil filth that excretes from his addled brain during long nights lost to the whiskey and mescal that fuelled them. The results were sifted through by the folks at Aarght!, who compiled this LP. You get half a dozen actual songs mixed up with a mess of instrumental chaos......

and man YOU DON'T COME ACROSS A BAND LIKE JAMES ARTHUR MANHUNT EVERYDAY...  these guys are out to rock whether yr listening or not........

Terminal Boredom sez: ''Mostly (but not all) instrumental and dealing in arid tumbleweed lore and sci-fi rotgut seizures, MANHUNT gives JAMES a reason to get all schnockered up and expel his inner demons via 4-track....A smashed southern R&B and garage sound in the same vein as his recent namesake singles or 68' Comeback...if they was NUTS. Messy and fun all around."

Goner  Records  sez : ''Fuzz, reverb, guitar overload from James Arthur. Manhunt was described in Australia as ''Psychedelic Vomit'' and we're not disagreeing. Suicide, International Harvester, Chrome, Davie Allan, Jeff Evans, Roy & The Devil's Motorcycle, and the ghost of 68 Comeback's Jack Taylor all live in this thing. It's dense. It's wild. It's great!''
SPACE ROCK smashed to pieces by some southern acid fried garage punks........  Think the OBLIVIANS or the LAZY COWGIRLS covering HAWKWIND or SPACEMEN 3 with LOU REED's METAL MACHINE MUSIC scorching levels of destruction..........
anyway this is one of those releases i slept on, but reports from GONER FEST this year tell me that these guys are not to be missed....... so go ahead and.....click here to download the s/t lp from 2010

(thanks goes to SMASHIN TRANSISTORS for the tip on these guys as well as several people from chicago who sadly went to goner fest without me......)

deaf wish - s/t and reality & visions lps

DEAF WISH were recommended to me by an Australian friend, who said they were one of the best bands in the scene there.....and i won't disagree......

noise punk destruction, with hints of TOUCH and GO abrasion (think SCRATCH ACID or BIG BLACK),  or maybe some comparisons to the WIPERS, BLACK FLAG or early SONIC YOUTH (confusion is sex era), but really just some fun crazy fucking rock n roll........

so click here for the s/t lp from 2007

and here for the REALITY and VISIONS lp from 2009

demons claws - lost in the desert part deux

DEMONS CLAWS are one of my favorite garage rock bands kicking around CANADA...... they have much in common with THE BLACK LIPS, DEAD GHOSTS, OBLIVIANS and fellow MONTREAL rocker MARK SULTAN.... and you might say they follow in the good country blues punk tradition of THE GUN CLUB.......

P TRASH and IN THE RED have both put out past DEMONS CLAWS lps, but until their next full length, they've released the another volume in their LOST IN THE DESERT rarities, out takes and singles series on TELEPHONE EXPLOSION records......

you can listen to the new lp, lost part 2, below via SOUNDCLOUD.

gonn - the loudest band in town

GONN were IOWA's secret proto punk garage stompers in the late 60s........a couple of their songs were compiled in the NUGGETS and PEBBLES comps, but their singles are hard to come by......and sadly they've gone unnoticed except by the most fanatical garage rock record collectors.....

much like the STANDELLS, RATIONALS, LOVE or THE COUNT FIVE, if you want some rowdy 60s garage, you should look no further than GONN........

i could listen to these guys all day long........

keggs - to find out / girl

THIS RECORD IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF GARAGE ROCK......recorded in DETROIT in 1967, originals of this single have gone for thousands of dollars, and rumor has it only a hundred were originally pressed........

nobody knows much about the KEGGS, but along with the SONICS and the SEEDS, they were among the best of the 60s garage bands...

THE GORIES covered "to find out" and may have found their primal garage punk stomp in those grooves.......

both tracks from the KEGGS single were included in the BACK FROM THE GRAVE series, but that's about the only place you could find any KEGGS....although from time to time there have been bootlegs.....

but NOW YOU CAN OWN YERSELF a REPRESS of the KEGGS single via CHICAGO's PRIORITY MALE records.........

i think i'm going to buy myself a copy tomorrow.........

and go get the 7 inch before its gone...... (clicking the link takes you to RECKLESS RECORDS where you can buy it online)

and listen below to SONG IN GREY
off WHENEVER I WANT........
Mark Sultan - "Song In Grey" by forcefieldpr

king blood - eyewash silver

sometimes you come across an album that you just gotta tell people about..... KING BLOOD "eyewash silver" is one of those lps.......

it's a psych rock / noise jam through and through......i'd write more, but PERMANENT records was excited enough about KING BLOOD to repress the lp, so i'll just let you read their write-up.........and when they get excited about a band, it's always worth checking out......

King Blood - Eyewash Silver (2011 Permanent Records Repress) -
Numbered Edition of 300 - Permanent Records' 27th label Release
In late 2010 a record came out of nowhere and blew our minds. That record was "Eyewash Silver" by King Blood. Unfortunately, it was issued in a limited edition of 100 copies and it disappeared faster than a fugitive at a busted up coke party. We initially discovered the record through a very enticing review that Doug Mosurock over at Still Single / Dusted wrote and our minds were blown when we received the records and realized that there was absolutely no hyperbole or exaggeration in Doug's review. For your reference, here's said review:
"Little anonymous fuzz guitar rudiment blowdown from ex-Snake Apartment guitarist Ryland Wharton (also the man behind the excellent Skulltones and Twonicorn labels). As King Blood, he lays down eight instrumental four-trackers rendered over a three-year period, nothing but guitar, bass and cymbal to keep time, and in that space the artist gets real, with simple themes repeated in a noisy, low-rent, yet meditative space. For as thick as these vibes get, the music itself is not necessarily aggressive, which is why these big, billowing songs sound gentle and bluesy and introspective, even in the overblown treatment most of them receive. Early Wooden Shjips or the Purling Hiss LP (and above all, Les Rallizes Denudes) would be good signposts for this album, but without the obvious psych moves like wah-solos and acid burn motifs, or the heavy drumming to keep time; King Blood wants to get you down by volume, and in that it is a drifting, uncompromising, diffuse and very loud success. 100 copies for this world, in paste-on sleeves – a few contain a silkscreened design on Stonehenge paper that was allegedly runoff from a gallery exhibition held earlier this summer. Those are signed and numbered as well. (availability? ask the angels…)"
Sounds exciting, right? Yeah, well it lives up to the review, and then some. "Eyewash Silver" is an incredible, dumbed-down, shit-fi, riff-drenched instrumental psych record that will KILL fans of Wooden Shjips / Les Rallizes Denudes (and all the rest of those touchstone bands mentioned in the review - Doug knows his shit). In fact, the same folks will be kicking themselves HARD if they don't grab one of these while they still have the (second) chance.
This limited reissue contains the same astounding sounds as the original pressing, but the artwork has been glorified. Each one of these 300 copies was lovingly hand-assembled, diligently hand-numbered, and carefully handled by Permanent staffers. We've heard of buyer's remorse, but never with records. It's always non-buyers remorse when it comes to wax. Don't fall victim (twice) on this one.

i would feel bad about sharing this link but even with PERMANENT's repress, there are still less than 500 copies of this lp floating around...
