after a couple of stellar fuzz coated / art damaged singles and a self titled tape, EASTLINK is here with their world weary, minimal chord feeback punk statement!!!!!  a sort of anti-thesis on all that is right and wrong in the current state of ROCK N ROLL.   dipping deep in the possibilities of repetition and simplicity borrowed from la monte young on thru krautrock and fusing those lessons to the ugly punk we've all come to love from the aussie scene and thus melding that unwieldy beast to the most damaged / warped outsider psych rock you can imagine, EASTLINK IS A DIRECT REFUTATION on all those cliche loving bands pretending it's still 1968, or 1982 or whatever year certain subgenres of ROCK N ROLL calcified into a mold, ready to the next band to inject their plastic selves into!

EASTLINK is about escape from the narrow demarcations of analog sound that people argue back and forth about.  their name might allude to a highway in australia just as much as it might refer to kraftwerk's mind bending vision of the autobahn.  both bands seeing beyond the possibilities given to them.  EASTLINK transcends punk or perhaps post punk by adding / subtracting psych / noise / melody and leaving nothing but a menacing mess of layered noise for yer ears to meditate / dissect with every listen.  a band with four guitars and a primal drummer and no bass playing anchor, EASTLINK is UNHINGED DISTORTO KOSMISCHE MUSIC FOR THE YOUNG AND REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!!

not recommended for the musically unadventurous.  but definitely for those into SONIC YOUTH, DESTRUCTION UNIT, MONOSHOCK, DISAPPEARS, UV RACE, SPACIN, CAN and the like.......

WATCH OUT THE AUSTRALIANS ARE COMING!!!!!!!  fuck the brit invasion constantly referenced in the music history books, cuz if you wanna write a book about the real underground ROCK N ROLL, you'd most certainly have to include the waves of killer aussie bands that have been invading the states for years...... and though mostly unnoticed by yer average american music fan, these down under bands are concocting some of the best / most fun records you can get yer hands up.....  and if you've been reading TINY GROOVES for any length of time now, you know quite a few of these bands and you definitely know about LIVING EYES, a group that perhaps gets to own the title of BEST CURRENT AUSTRALIAN GARAGE BAND, and trust me there's fierce competition for that designation...........

so i was more than pleased when earlier this year, ANTI FADE RECORDS (with the help of GET HIP in america) released the self titled debut lp from LIVING EYES........  and it's been on constant spin ever since........

somehow LIVING EYES can cop that garage swagger from MISSING LINKS, THE HAUNTED, SHADOWS OF THE KNIGHT and the SONICS and combine with a fuzzy layer of drunken do-it-yerself / lo-fi rock that makes it sound both like the CLASSICS and the NOW SOUND......  they've found a unique way to reinvent rock n roll, just like fellow garage rockers TY SEGALL, STRANGE BOYS, HARLEM and THE OH SEES, and they've made it rambunctious, sweaty, dirty and out of control again..........

infectious as those old BACK FROM THE GRAVES anthems,
you'll be humming along and shaking yer hips in a quick sec.......

THE SAINTS were one of the best punk bands to explode outta australia in the late 70s..... often looked over in the rock n roll history books because of the narrow focus on the rock n roll scenes in america and england, they deserve a rightful place next to the ramones and the damned as one of the legendary early punk bands......

the saints put out two of punk's greatest lps, I'M STRANDED and ETERNALLY YOURS back to back.....and if you've never heard them, now's the time to introduce yerself to THE SAINTS........

COBWEBBS has been making a name for themselves this year with a slew of hot no-fi psychedelic rock releases....singles on ANTI-FADE and SATURNO as well as a cassette split with HEIROPHANTS, an appearance on a tape comp for ANTI-FADE and a demos lp COMMUNION................and now to top of their stellar year, COBWEBBS have a new garage burning long player on LOST RACE records entitled ALL AROUND. 

dudes, this new album from COBWEBBS is one of the most entrancing slabs of droning space rocking psych I've heard all year.  An lp that just missed the deadline for inclusion as one of the best albums of the year, a list it certainly would've made......

COBWEBBS up the ante with their particularly dark shoegazed, feedback drenched and swampy psych rock n roll.  yes that perfect mixture of scientists, michael yonkers and spacemen 3 psych howl to get yer blood boiling and yer mind expanding......

for those looking for a new band to take you further into the fuzzed out eerie corners of your soul, look no further that ALL AROUND.  this lp is more than just highly recommended.  It's fucking necessary for fans of hazy psych rock.  (yes just as necessary as yer blue cheer, jesus & mary chain or loop albums, and ALL AROUND is what i might call a new classic.....)

Forget your UFO CLUB, NIGHT BEATS, COSMONAUTS and BLACK ANGELS lps that you've been hyping up....... this is the one lp you'll spin all year long.  i promise.

SLUG GUTS just released their excellent new lp PLAYIN' IN TIME WITH THE DEADBEAT on SACRED BONES...... and it's a must spin record......  this release follows their awesome dark noisy four song 7 inch, Stranglin You Too, from earlier this year on HOZAC......and their very creepy brutal post apocalyptic lp from last year HOWLIN' GANG........  fans of feedtime, birthday party, the scientists, chrome cranks, cheater slicks, the cows and jesus lizard MUST TUNE IN TO THE DAMAGED ROCK N ROLL OF SLUG GUTS.......

THE LIVING EYES just put out what might be my favorite 7 inch of the year......and with stiff competition that's saying quite a bit......... they are continuing the australian invasion in the very best of ways, marrying snotty garage, melodic diy pop and lo-fi punk rock into one hell of a catchy fucking single--WAYS TO MAKE A LIVING.......

out now on ANTI FADE RECORDS, a label that you incidentally ought to check out now, LIVINGS EYES' new 7 inch combines the classic guitar riffs of the 13th Floor Elevators and Kinks with the bounce of Ty Segall and The Oh Sees........and on top of it, they have one of the most unique lead singers in the scene........ i can't stop listening to this single and can't wait to hear a full length from them.......

slug guts - stranglin' you too 7 inch

The Hozac Hookup Klub subscription series is always more than worth the money to sign up, especially with this latest round of stellar underground rock.  The cream of the crop has to be the new single from Slug Guts, entitled "Stranglin You Too".  

Slug Guts' play stomach wrenching swampy gothic noise rock that owes much to fellow Australians Birthday Party and the Scientists as well as early Christian Death.  Last years epic noise rattled Lp "Howlin Gang" on Sacred Bones was an ear blistering effort that ought to have awoken fans looking for lost Swans albums / demos out of their stupor, and Slug Gut's new single is even better than that.  

All four of these tracks crammed on to "Stranglin You Too" continue on in the abrasive murky post apocalyptic rock vibe of their earlier releases.  "Sucking Down" is like a schizophrenic homeless man on the corner howling about the evils of the world and its eminent end. "Coathanger Blue" and "Old Sores, New Boys" shows their love of old Touch and Go records and thrashy mid tempo guitar rock.  But it's really the title track, "Stranglin You Too" that nails the creepy vibe down.  Kinda like a slowed down Murder City Devils mixed with a vitriolic blast of blues based feedback, the kind that the Chrome Cranks are known for.  There are few contemporaries for such wailing noise, sax explosions and angular minor chord riffs, but Slug Guts have like minds in bands like Pop. 1280, Nones and K-Holes.   And if you like any of those bands, you definitely need to check out Slug Guts.

feedtime - the aberrant years lp box set

australia has produced some of the most brutal swampy noise infected post punk bands ever.... besides the scientists and the birthday party, you must add feedtime to the list of classic noise rock bands......

described as avant garde pub rock, i'd call feedtime all out skronk blues rock n roll obliteration...... kinda like mixing captain beefheart with no wave.  sort of like the chrome cranks or pussy galore mud wrestling with the melvins in toxic sludge....  you don't hear rock n roll this raw loud and biting very often if ever......

feedtime is the proto noise mongering band that should be cited as an influence by everyone in the underground rock scene, especially by the garage punkers, the grunge rockers and the current noise rock stompers..... they ought to be a band everybody knows about and loves and adds to mixtapes...... but sadly this is not the case....

but lest we forget feedtime, sub pop records has come to the rescue and recently issued feedtime's first four lps as a box set......  their s/t, shovel, cooper-S and suction lps all originally issued Aberrant Records of australia between 85 and 89........ the set sensibly titled the ABERRANT YEARS collects all these fucking way out of print albums so you and i can finally enjoy them........

this is essential listening for anyone who loves noisy fun dark angry rock n roll.......  add feedtime to yr record collection now....... only 1000 of these lp box sets were pressed up, so buy one before they're gone......

DIVORCED may have not caught many ears over here in the states, but their spazzy / noisy slab of vinyl, SEPARATION ANXIETY, should've made many year end best of lists, especially mine..... minimal power chord driven punk rock done the aussie way, with plenty off feedback, energy, and lo-fi production..... damaged bent-out-of-shape rock n roll jams that are as killer as the stooges, birthday party or the early saints output...... anyone who loves wild unhinged rock ought to pick up this lp now......

fans of dead farmers, straight arrows, uv race, axeman, kitchen's floor or radio birdman will dig this album for sure..... and well if you've ever read a copy of the NEGATIVE GUEST LIST ZINE or bought a record from GONER, this record is definitely for you......

circle pit - sewercide & slave / honey 7 inches

the australian noise pop / trash rocker up-and-comers, CIRCLE PIT, may not have released a new longer player in xx11, but they certainly didn't sit still all year.....

Circle Pit released two stellar new singles last year, which i'm only now getting the chance to listen to......  both are well worth searching out at yr local record store.......   and i can't wait til they put out a new lp this year.......

SEWERCIDE is more of the scum / glam rock fuzz that got me infatuated with these guys in the first place.....i know Circle Pit hates to be compared to the ROYAL TRUX, but hey not many bands can actually earn that comparison.....but then again maybe their SEWERCIDE 7 inch sounds more like PUSSY GALORE or THE HONEYMOON KILLERS......  anyway this single is one of my favs from last year...... listen to SEWERCIDE here

their other 7 inch, SLAVE / HONEY is less abrasive then SEWERCIDE or their previous lp, BRUISE CONSTELLATION (siltbreeze)......the 7 inch showcases the other direction they can take, Circle Pit playing some awesome shoegaze pop that i wanna listen to over and over again.....SLAVE / HONEY is such a melodic woozy affair that it merits some JESUS AND MARY CHAIN / MY BLOODY VALENTINE comparisons.....but i love bands that like the same records as i do, so keep it up, Circle Pit.......  listen to SLAVE / HONEY below.....

eddy current suppression ring - so many things

out of all the australian bands that've been mentioned in tiny grooves, eddy current suppression ring has to be one of my favorites.......

and there's quite the stiff competition for that title....

all their albums are worth picking up.......if you like yer garage punk, ramshackle loud and angular....

and they've just released a new b-sides collection, SO MANY THINGS, for us to listen to under that punk rock xmas tree of ours.......

EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESION RING have drawn comparisons to Wire, Can, The Fall, Fugazi and The Stooges. They have a singer who wears black gloves to overcome stage fright. They won the $30,000 Australian Music Prize for their 2008 album Primary Colours-then recorded the next one themselves in a few hours in their practice space and spent the dough on a photo shoot for the album cover. They do not care about you and your expectations. You could call them "fiercely independent" but they don't seem fierce at all. Quietly, and definitely on their own terms, EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING has become a force in underground music. Now, after three albums, it's time for a compilation of singles tracks, demos and other stuff they had lying round. to continue on with my love for the australian scene, i gotta let you know about the DEAD FARMERS.... ...stooges / mc5 / blue cheer influenced heavy riffing garage rock....this is loud fun fuzzed out rock n roll....... i can't get enough of it.........  reminds me of the night beats, brimstone howl, mudhoney and the cosmonauts........ a good cross between heavy psych and garage rock....with a bit of early black sabbath and cactus thrown in for good measure.......

highly recommended.......  

DEAD FARMERS have one single on AARGHT and a one record on RIP SOCIETY, with a new 7 inch on the way....... their releases are hard to come by, but well fucking worth it.....

AUSTRALIA keeps my turntable real happy these days.....  and TOTAL CONTROL is another band from that scene you gotta check out.....

synth post punk meets garage rock with a heavy krautrock influence that should be filed away somewhere near the KILLED BY DEATH influenced punk section at yr local record shop.......

their new lp HENGE BEAT is a sure shot for one of the best albums of the year.......  and since the band shares members with UV RACE and EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING, that's really no surprise......


TOTAL CONTROL is going on a killer fall tour with THE OH SEES..... (dates listed here in a previous post) and CASTLEFACE RECORDS is putting out an awesome tour split 12 inch of both bands which is also highly recommended......

i want TOTAL CONTROL to be yr favorite new band.....

DEAF WISH were recommended to me by an Australian friend, who said they were one of the best bands in the scene there.....and i won't disagree......

noise punk destruction, with hints of TOUCH and GO abrasion (think SCRATCH ACID or BIG BLACK),  or maybe some comparisons to the WIPERS, BLACK FLAG or early SONIC YOUTH (confusion is sex era), but really just some fun crazy fucking rock n roll........
