thee oh sees - moon sick ep (RSD, castle face)

a band as prolific as THE OH SEES couldn't let RECORD STORE DAY pass without a release of some kind, so this year we were treated to a brand new 12 inch EP titled MOON SICK.... .......comprised of four new psych / garage thrashers that'll for sure get the most apathetic of rock n roll fans bouncing off the walls in no time......  (no wonder they have a slew of imitators these days, but that's a whole other topic of discussion)

were these songs from the FLOATING COFFIN sessions?  or just a couple of gems sitting around the oh sees practice space?  who knows?  and it really doesn't matter when at this point i'm a junkie for every new release from john dwyer and co........

so yes, it's another highly recommended oh sees' release!!!!!!  and i'll never get tired of typing that.

though sadly very limited, at least
you can listen to a couple of tracks of MOON SICK below -

double dagger - 333 (RSD, thrill jockey) lp + dvd

as if their last tour wasn't enough of a farewell (which it wasn't), THRILL JOCKEY RECORDS released DOUBLE DAGGER's final EP 333 for RECORD STORE DAY this year..... packaged with a dvd of the documentary IF WE SHOUT LOUD ENOUGH (on the band, their final shows and impact on their DIY punk scene), 333 is a more than necessary exclamation point to one of my favorite DIY hardcore / punk bands of all time.   sure i'm biased--being friends with the band, going on tour with them, and helping promote their shows, seeing them play multiple times--but ask anyone who's seen DOUBLE DAGGER live and they will all say the same thing, these guys are one of the fucking best bands ever / if not life changing.......in a world where we're inundated with music and it's hard to get excited about new bands, DOUBLE DAGGER went about things the old school unpretentious DIYway: playing loft shows, releasing their own records, touring cities they felt a kinship with, helping other bands out, and being part of a baltimore scene that's since taken the world by storm...... no trying to be the next hype band or making a career out of it, or aiming for the mainstream...... all DOUBLE DAGGER wanted to is have a fucking fun time and play some RIOTOUS LOUD PUNK ROCK....and we're all the better for it..........

to say these guys will be missed is an understatement.  their last two chicago shows were off the fucking chain and probably the most fun i've ever had at any shows.....   it's too bad there's no more DOUBLE DAGGER to look forward to, but at least we have this film documenting the band and one last killer ep.......

and sometimes it's best to stop while you're ahead.  no need to tarnish all the awesome memories.

everything DOUBLE DAGGER has released is HEAVILY RECOMMENDED
and 333 IS NO EXCEPTION.

SO CRANK THIS SHIT UP LOUD,
FEEL YOUNG
AND REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
THANKS DOUBLE DAGGER FOR EVERYTHING.

ty segall - ty rex 2 (RSD 7 inch, goner)

now that the dust has cleared from RECORD STORE DAY 2013, i'll highlight a few of my favorite releases from this year's vinyl / record shop celebrating holiday.  my apologies if this is a tease, cuz no one these releases were pressed in enough quantities to go around, but at least you can stream some of the excellent jams on TINY GROOVES (not that makes up for the exclusivity of it all)......

yes, TY SEGALL is one prolific stream of energy, so it's no surprise that he teamed up with his old label GONER for another gem in the form of a RSD single....this time around a follow up to 2011's RSD 12 inch T REX covers EP, aptly titled TY REX 2...... two more MARC BOLAN glam / psych bangers done up in that sweetly melodic / chaotic garage way that TY SEGALL has down in spades......

the A SIDE is CAT BLACK (THE WIZARD HAT'S) from Tyrannosaurus Rex's 1969 lp UNICORN and the B SIDE is MOTIVATOR from the epically classic T-REX album ELECTRIC WARRIOR.... both songs highlight TY's kinship / love for T REX and if you thought no one was up to the challenge of taking on such memorable songs and making them their own, you are wrong...... these two songs are some of the best / most fun covers i've heard in quite some time (and if you've been to a ty segall show, you know the guy has a way of making any cover song from sabbath to james gang killer).....

probably only the diehard ty segall fans got ahold of this one on record store day, but seriously everyone should have these two songs in their collection.....   repeat listens hands down.

LISTEN TO THE ENTIRETY OF TY REX 2 BELOW,
and scramble around the internet to grab a copy for yerself soon,
this one's gonna be super collectible........

mark sultan - the war on rock n roll

IN THE RED records is celebrating RECORD STORE DAY by releasing a live MARK SULTAN lp, entitled THE WAR ON ROCK N ROLL......  this is essential i promise, as Mark Sultan is one of the best live garage/punk acts around.....

THE WAR ON ROCK N ROLL is available as a free download just in case you can't get yr hands on one of the limited lps on RSD...... and here's what Mark Sultan has to say about the War on RnR lp.....

"In The Red Records has decided to release this recording on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day, and I am thrilled. While you listen to this recording, keep in mind that it is one take, live, and that the sides of the LP split the recording, obviously due to vinyl's time limitations upon pressing. At the time of this recording, yes, I was hellbent on converting my live sound to what you hear on this LP. It had been my first and only attempt at this sound, and while I am myself curious how I pulled it off in that one take, and while I really enjoy how it sounds, I never tried doing it again. Maybe I will for some of these upcoming shows."

the pows - once lp

THE POWS were the unknown psych / garage warriors of the Columbia, Missouri scene.....

featuring members of CAVE and HEATER, these guys just rocked out not giving a fuck if anyone payed attention, but Permanent Records sure did.   and they wanted to share this lost gem of rock goodness with the rest of us for RECORD STORE DAY......

think lo-fi garage bent punk mixed with some minimal post punk angst and a bit of psych weirdness....  but listen for yerself...the POWS are not easily definable music, yet who cares when its so fun.... fans of seedy underground rock like the TESTORS, DEAD MOON, SCREAMERS, CHEATER SLICKS and/or PERE UBU will love the POWS.....

just read what Lance and Liz from PERMANENT had to say about the POWS......Columbia, Missouri was our mecca for music in the early 2000's.  The scene in this small oasis of a college town was loaded with talent, creativity and youthful energy.  Some really talented musicians came out of that era of Columbia.  The bands they performed in and went on to perform in include bands you may have heard of like Cave, Mahjongg, Heater, Bitchin' Bajas, Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, Bobby Conn, and California Raisins.  The Pows were one of the best bands in Columbia during the 1998-2004 years.  The band began as a snotty garage punk duo before they were old enough to drive.  Over the course of a couple of years, they added a couple members, aged slightly, and got way more experimental.  Columbia's Andy Warhol figure, Channing Kennedy, and his CDr label Cat Jams fostered the the local music scene.  The Pows put both of their records and a 'Hits' comp out on Cat Jams, alongside bands like The I Love You But I'm Not In Love With Yous, Swamp Fuck, the post-Pows project Sabertooth, and a bunch of other stuff no one outside of Columbia, save for a few hyper-cool Japanese peeps, have ever heard of.  We digress.  This scene is what we grew up with.  It inspired us to start our first band, open our own record store, and start our own label.  How's that for DIY?  The Pows were one of our favorite bands in Columbia while they existed.  Their brand of snotty White Stripes-like minimalism meets Chrome-esque weirdness (supposedly they hadn't heard Chrome before recording this stuff) was like anything we'd heard up to that point and, honestly, still some of our all-time favorite shit.  Seriously.  Liz and I learned all the songs on their first album and performed as The Pows after they'd broken up at a show that Channing booked at Maude Vintage (another important piece of the Columbia puzzle) as a The Pows final performance.  So few people saw the Pows when they were active that hardly anyone even noticed that we weren't them.  We were honored to be mistaken for The Pows.  We were also honored to release another Columbia band's last LP, Warhammer 48k's epic "An Ethereal Oracle", as the first record on Permanent a few years later after just having opened our Chicago location.  Warhammer broke up and a couple of the guys went on to play in Cave.  Cave's drummer, Rex McMurry, was an original member of The Pows.  As was Cave art guru and Heater member, Zach McLuckie.  We hounded these guys for years about doing a Pows record on Permanent and it's finally come to fruition.  We couldn't be more proud to be releasing this Pows career-spanning restrospective LP as the 30th Permanent release.....

and check out three songs from the POWS below.....and go to PERMANENT RECORDS in chicago or LA on RECORD STORE DAY to pick up a copy.  limited to 100 copies.......so don't sleep on it.....
