todays hits - sex boys ep

get ready for some sleazy no-fi RnR with RANDY RECORDS latest banger, SEX BOYS from
chicago's TODAY'S HITS!!!!!!!!

comprised of recent kentucky transplant james (who started the band on some sort of dare to write a 1000 songs in a 1000 days), kenny from MAGIC MILK and andrew from THE SUEVES, TODAYS HITS is kinda like a misfit supergroup of chicago's trashy garage underground....  and SEX BOYS, their debut effort, distills all the wonderful misanthropic RnR energy you could want through the fucked up haze of jangly garage and bubblegum trash pop......all four of these songs are addictingly simple and sweet and sure to get stuck in yer over stimulated head the rest of the week.....  not since KIM FOWLEY WAS WARPING THE MINDS OF THE YOUTH CULTURE ON THE SUNSET STRIP HAS A BAND CONCOCTED SUCH A TRASHY AND FUN DEBUT SINGLE!!!!!!

fans of KING TUFF, NOBUNNY, UH BONES, GENTLEMAN JESSE, SLUSHY, BUSY SIGNALS, GLITZ, BARE WIRES and/or any of the bands on RANDY, BURGER or CASTLE FACE need this SEX BOYS EP now........

resonars - the greatest songs of...

TROUBLE IN MIND is doing us all a great service by releasing a best of THE RESONARS, whose back catalog is almost all out of print and way difficult to track down.......and understandably so, cuz nobody writes such catchy psych tinged, power popped garage rock tunes like THE RESONARS do....... finally everyone can check out this killer tuscon, arizona band, as they should've long ago!!!!!!!!

matt rendon has been soldiering on with a rotating cast of backing members, composing smash hit after smash hit, in relative obscurity as the RESONARS for over 15 years... (starting with a s/t debut album for STAR TIME in '98)... mixing a potent elixir of jangle pop, syrupy power chord melodies, psychedelic 60s rock and hazy AM pop, the RESONARS play some seriously earworming RnR that'll stick with you all day long.......  fans of BIG STAR, THE HOLLIES, THE DENTISTS, THE SHOES, THE CLEAN, THE BEACH BOYS and THE BYRDS (IE GREAT FUCKING POP MUSIC) need to hear the RESONARS now......

all the resonars albums are highly recommended, but if yer gonna start somewhere grab THE GREATEST SONGS OF THE RESONARS, and get ready to flip it over and over again.......

(for further listening, i'd suggest LUNAR KIT on GET HIP, or THAT EVIL DRONE on BURGER, but really any RESONARS you can get yer hands on will do!!!!!!)

seriously i can't get enough of these songs,

ALL KILLER NO FILLER and that is no joke!!!!!

i might just have to put a best of comp on my year end list of top albums!!!!!!!!!!

stream GREATEST SONGS OF THE RESONARS below -

gap dream - s/t lp

Cleveland might not be the flower power psychedelic rock n roll capital of the country, but after spinning GAP DREAM's self-titled debut lp, you just might think it is.  Sunshine pop harmonies cascade through mellow garage fuzz, sucking you deep into the world of transistor radios, hazy drug smoke, and lazy days at the beach.  A strong vein of post Brit Invasion SoCal pop runs through this LP, reminding me of those much listened to and revered Byrds, Seeds, Love, and Strawberry Alarm Clock albums.  Maybe you can even throw in a hint of T Rex or Syd Barrett when trying to pinpoint Gap Dreams' dreamy garage gems.......

at any rate, GAP DREAM is definitely recommended if you're into White Fence, Fresh and Onlys, Strange Boys, or Black Angels.....and this s/t debut is some of the most pleasant psych garage pop you'll hear all year long.  Grab the LP from BURGER RECORDS now, 350 copies isn't enough to go around by a long shot...... (also available on tape for all you boombox kids....)

LISTEN TO THE WHOLE LP BELOW......

i bet you'll even listen to it more than once, i know i did.....

magic jake & the power crystals - s/t

MAGIC JAKE AND THE POWER CRYSTALS is just the shot of rock n roll adrenaline you need to speed through the week......

lead by MAGIC JAKE, the bass player of KING TUFF's awesome band, and joined by BOBBY HARLOW of THE GO and CONSPIRACY OF OWLS with a few other rowdy detroit rock n roll cohorts, MAGIC JAKE AND THE POWER CRYSTAL is a wild ride through sloppy fun power pop, garage rock antics and motor city punk rock chaos.......

their self titled album came out as a small pressing of cassettes last year on BURGER and the few people with tape decks were blown away......but now this riotous bunch of spastic catchy songs is available on vinyl for the first time...... and it's waaaaaayyyyyyyyyy recommended!  i was expecting much from this record when i threw it on the turntable, but holy shit every song is your new favorite jam.......  go buy MAGIC JAKE's s/t from BURGER now before it's out of print and you regret not having it for that next night of all night partying.........

LISTEN TO THE WHOLE ALBUM BELOW......

cosmonauts - lazerbeam ep

COSMONAUTS are back with another killer slab of vinyl this time on austin's REVERBERATION APPRECIATION SOCIETY.... the new ep is entitled LAZERBEAMS and it's four tracks of absolutely fuzzed out psych garage bliss.....  just as good, maybe even better than their previous efforts on BURGER and PERMANENT.......

you'll wanna grab this super limited hand screened 7 inch before it's gone....

LISTEN TO THE WHOLE EP BELOW if you need convincing, but anyone who's into TY SEGALL, THE OH SEES, THE NIGHT BEATS and BLACK ANGELS should definitely be into the COSMONAUTS......  and anything they put out is highly recommended........

watch em rock AUSTIN PSYCH FEST this year......

natural child - for the love of the game

NATURAL CHILD just released another awesome bluesy southern fried rock n roll stomper of an LP via BURGER RECORDS entitled FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME...... and for those not in the know, NATURAL CHILD play some of the best full throttle bluesy country rock meets primal garage jams ought there today......

imagine the stooges, cactus, blue cheer,  neil young & crazy horse, tav falco, the rolling stones, mc5 and canned heat all getting wasted and high together and deciding to play a sweaty basement show just for the hell of it....

or in other words....
NATURAL CHILD is what rock n roll is supposed to sound like:
a brash, loud, unhinged and wild drunken time.......

MMOSS - ¡

MMOSS are psychedelic adventurers that just happen to play rock n roll........

they've put out one of the most enveloping albums i've heard in quite sometime......MMOSS definitely sucks you deep into their acid fried world with ¡, their debut lp.....  much like OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL, or perhaps THE PEOPLES TEMPLE........

these new hampshire kids should've played woodstock...or hung out in san fran in the late 60s......or at least been with the ELEPHANT 6 circle when it started out........

and unlike many of the indie kids, they don't shy away from heading into hippie rock territory......flowers in the hair, flutes......SOFT MACHINE, HAWKWIND, SPIRIT, PINK FLOYD records spinning by the light of lava lamps......

all i can say is that i can't stop listening to MMOSS, and maybe you'll feel the same way.......

up and comers- cosmonauts

Cosmonauts - S/T lp - Permanent Records' 24th label release! -  Cosmonauts are Orange County's premier garage psych group and they're barely old enough to drink legally. These kids have only been making music together for a short while, but they've already shared stages with and are garnering comparisons to well-known garage and psych acts like Black Angels, Ty Segall, and Thee Oh Sees. Although Cosmonauts share some similar influences with these groups, their sound is much grittier, more repetitive, and more Spacemen 3 influenced. Cassette tape tastemakers, Burger Records, released the Cosmonauts debut on tape back in 2010 and now it's available on wax for the first time courtesy of Permanent Records. Fans of the aforementioned bands will absolutely be calling themselves Cosmonauts fans before the year is out.

the burger records tape is sold out and i have a feeling the permanent records lp will be gone soon too.....don't miss out........

check out this live set @ burger records below......

and here are a couple more videos, just in case yr not convinced......

and ps......if you live near LA, check them out at the permanent records LA store opening on june 4th....(yep you west coast kids get to have yr own permanent records store... it's just too cool to be in just one spot.......)

but i'm crossing my fingers that these kids will tour across the us, so everyone else gets to see them soon......

tapes, tapes, tapes, i mean who listens to cds

tapes really aren't anymore antiquated than cds, if you ask me.

easier for labels to produce in small quantities than vinyl or cds, analog, almost impossible to destroy (unless you play them a thousand times, like i did with the pixies' doolitte), great for yr car, and cheap to buy and press (compared to vinyl)....and cassettes hold some sorta cultural aura, almost as much as records.....

so i love that in certain DIY circles, the indie kids are making tapes again.

with that said, tiny grooves wants you to check out two awesome cassette labels.....

BURGER RECORDS (based out of california) has been releasing tape versions of awesome albums by the likes of black lips, moonhearts, bare wires, nobunny, clorox girls, bad sports, television personalities, king tuff, jacuzzi boys, harlem, ty segall and the oh sees....pretty much sums up the garage punk scene in one list..... click on the link and buy their shit.........

PLUS TAPES has just released their 50th cassette and the plan is to keep the analog love kicking.....based out of chicago and with releases by such bands as disappears, black math, outer minds, radar eyes, rabble rabble, mannequin men and the hollows.....plustapes is the cassette brother to hozac and trouble in mind records in the chicago scene. all releases are less than 200 copies and fucking great......

and just remember mp3s aren't as real as actually owning the music yerself, whether its a record or cassette (and possibly cd).......

up and comers: conspiracy of owls

Conspricary of Owls are one of the new indie/garage bands on Burger Records that you ought to pay attention to.....

dream/shoegaze/psych jams from detroit......

lost FM radio trasmissions from the kinda 70s rock station that we all wish existed. a world where todd rundgren and big star were chart toppers and not genesis and yes.......

CIty Beat had this to say "Conspiracy of Owls, a band with a name that screams Emo (it’s actually the title of a track from Robert Pollard’s Fiction Man album) but whose musical output couldn’t be more unexpected.

Fronted by Bobby Harlow, lead vocalist for The Go, the Detroit Garage Rock outfit that counted Jack White as a guitarist before his ascendance, Conspiracy of Owls dabbles in sounds befitting Detroit’s rich and varied history on its debut album, Ancient Robots. Incorporating everything from Space Rock atmospherics and ’60s bubblegum Pop sweetness to ’70s lysergic Rock swirl, Dub beat madness and Baroque Pop ambition, COO shimmers and sighs like an impossible focus group made up of the Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, Spiritualized, Kula Shaker and Nada Surf trying to come up with a committee song that will faithfully represent every decade since the British Invasion.

With an astonishing passion and precision, Conspiracy of Owls accomplishes that and so much more on Ancient Robots; the album’s title cut sounds like a gorgeous Pop collaboration between Roy Wood and Brian Wilson, detailing the melancholy lives of the mechanized human drones that built and maintained Detroit until it fell into corporate disrepair and economic ruin. It’s a lofty musical and lyrical premise, but Conspiracy of Owls nails it with unerring accuracy and a beautiful Pop veneer, a simultaneous glance back at Detroit’s musical past and an exciting vision of its future."
