adam widener - vesuvio nights

get ready for SPEAKERTREE RECORDS' latest smash hit, the debut album from ADAM WIDENER, "VESUVIO NIGHTS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  maybe you've seen adam play in one of his former bands, PLEXI 3, ZYGOTEENS and/or BARE WIRES, or maybe not...but his solo RnR is something YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO CHECK OUT NOW!!!!!!!

part 70s punk / part hazy garage pop with a little bit of a art bent new wave gloss and a nice sprinkling of glam sparkle, ADAM WIDENER's new lp VESUVIO NIGHTS might need a new genre classification... perhaps it ought to be called MOD PUNK or JANGLE WAVE.... but this lp is for sure one that needs yer attention.   it's love / debt to PAUL COLLINS BEAT, RICHARD HELL, THE UNDERTONES, THE JAM and 20/20 can't be overlooked and in fact just adds to its analogue charm and infectious melodic charge.....leaving you wanting more and more.......

fans of WARM SODA, GLITZ, ANDY HUMAN, NEEDLES // PINS, SAM COFFEY, COZY, GENTLEMAN JESSE and SLUSHY (aka all those kids taking punk, glam and bubblegum and making music LOUD, FUN AND STICKY SWEET AGAIN) will definitely get way HOOKED on VESUVIO NIGHTS.......

so yeah stop complaining you got nothing new to listen to cuz ADAM WIDENER is here with 14 new power popped punk jams to brighten yer day!!!!!!!

LISTEN TO A FEW TRACKS OF VESUVIO NIGHT BELOW -

the resonars - lunar kit

before every review of every decent band used the word GARAGE ROCK as a description, there was a band called THE RESONARS.....  they existed outside the media hype machine, breaking up and reforming constantly, releasing most of their output in the early 2000s via GET HIP records, which to me has always been an under-appreciated purveyor of garage and indie rock......

i thought THE RESONARS were just one of those lost footnotes in the anals of rock n roll history until i saw that they're playing TROUBLE IN MIND RECORDS' SXSW party at the TRAILER SPACE in AUSTIN next month......  if you weren't enticed enough to attend by the line-up of MIKAL CRONIN, APACHE DROPOUT, WHEELS ON FIRE, NIGHT BEATS, MEAN JEANS, WRONG WORDS and the HEX DISPENSERS....a very exciting appearance by the RESONARS is just enough to send the bill over the top into that "i can't believe i'll ever see a show this awesome again" category.......

i highly suggest you check out THE RESONARS.......  their mix of psych pop, garage and indie rock ought to appeal to everyone, but especially anyone who's ever bought a CYNICS record or anything on TROUBLE IN MIND RECORDS or by an ELEPHANT SIX related band.......

the mantles - mantles / pink information

THE MANTLES are another great garage/psych band from SAN FRAN........

their sound falls somewhere between the FRESH & ONLYS, the ROYAL BATHS, WRONG WORDS and THE OH SEES.........

they put out an excellent s/t lp in 2009 on SILTBREEZE and then released a follow up ep PINK INFORMATION on MEXICAN SUMMER in 2010.......... and just recently unleashed a new single RASPBERRY THIGHS on SDZ records (from france).....

ALLMUSIC wrote this about THE MANTLE'S first lp.....

The Mantles may hail from San Francisco and their self-titled album may have been released on Siltbreeze in 2009, but after listening to it, one would be excused for thinking the group hailed from Los Angeles and the album was released on Down There in 1986. Or that they were from Auckland and the record was released on Flying Nun in 1990. (Or even that they were from the Midwest, maybe Dayton, OH, and opened for Plasticland or Death of Samantha when they came through town.) They share the swirling guitar and organ textures of the Paisley Underground crowd, the chiming, chugging feel of classic New Zealand groups like the Chills, and the jangling, melodic songcraft of bands like Love and the Byrds (who inspired the Nuns and Undergrounders). The Mantles isn’t some studied nostalgia trip, though, despite how strong their influences come through. They escape it through strong songwriting, spirited performances, and the garagey energy that comes hopping off the grooves as the record spins. Songs like the pretty folk-rocker "Don’t Lie," the surging rockers "What We Do Matters" and "Yesterday’s Gone," or the a surprisingly soulful organ-led ballad "Look Away" make a strong case that the Mantles are almost on par with their inspirations. The rest of the album isn’t far behind, with the hits beating the duds 10-0. It’s an impressive debut album from a band that loves the past but doesn’t live in it.

TINY GROOVES highly recommends THE MANTLES......

myelin sheaths - get on your nerves

MYELIN SHEATHS are lo-fi punk/ garage pop from ALBERTA.......

they flew under my radar last year, but their 2010 lp "GET ON YOUR NERVES" is quite the rock n roll album.........in retrospect it would've made my top ten list for the year.......

recommended if you like  GOLDEN TRIANGLE, THE OH SEES, BLOOD ON THE WALL, TYVEK and HARLEM.....or pretty much anything on HOZAC records, which released a single of theirs in 2009.........(which, btw, you still might be able to find)

and though tiny grooves highly recommends them, the myelin sheaths broke up earlier this year, so you'll just have to enjoy their only full length lp.........which you can download here.......

dead ghosts- s/t lp

for fans of jacuzzi boys, black lips, ty segall and anything on trouble in mind records.....make DEAD GHOSTS yr favorite new band.

from the florida's dying records: " This is the first proper LP from Vancouver's Dead Ghosts, following a live tape turned 12" and a string of sold out 7"s, and these kids knock the ball clear out of the park. A 13 song non-stop hit parade of jangly lo-fi garage rock bashers, with some doo wop prom breaks, country & western twangy lead work, and shuffling rhythms to get the kids shinglin and shakin. The perfect soundtrack to a sweaty basement dance party...."

and that assessment is spot on. and if you can find copies of their seven inches of live lp, grab them too.....
