up and comers - manateees

2013 has been a fucking killer year for music, especially with an onslaught of amazing new bands that appear out of nowhere every day!  one such band i've been meaning to post about all year is memphis' new garage punk miscreants, MANATEEES!!!!!!   and everytime i was just about write about them i found out they were releasing yet another down n dirty single for yet another of my favorite record labels....  so i guess we'll cover them all right now, cuz you need to hear them yesterday!!!!!!

this year MANATEEES have released fucking MUST OWN 7 INCHES on PELICAN POW WOW, GONER, TIC TAC TOTALLY and JKSHK....  all of them blown out, drunken, thrashy punk like i can never get enough of.....   and as far as i'm concerned they might just be THE BAND TO SEE LIVE if yer ever in memphis....certainly they keep the city's longstanding tradition of unruly punk chaos alive.....

so if yer a junkie for BUCK BILOXI & THE FUCKS, TRUE SONS OF THUNDER, THE OBLIVIANS, REATARDS, GOLDEN PELICANS, PAMPERS, FOSTER CARE, GARY WRONG GROUP and anything on GONER / TOTAL PUNK / PELICAN POW WOW / CRYPT / JKSHK RECORDS, YOU FUCKING NEED TO INTRODUCE YERSELF TO YER NEW FAVORITE GO TO BAND!!!!!!!

and watch out for a brand new single from MANATEEES on TOTAL PUNK early next year, cuz there's no doubt in my mind it will melt yer face like all four of these singles.......

TRASHY / UGLY GARAGE PUNK DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAT THIS!!!!!!!

SO PREVIEW ALL FOUR OF THEIR KILLER SINGLES BELOW!!!!!!!!  and make sure you collect 'em all!!!!!!

CAT FOOD on GONER -

OUT FOR BOOZE on PELICAN POW WOW -

cobwebbs - all around

The latest and greatest psych rumblings from down under are from a relatively new up-and-coming band from Brisbane, Australia called COBWEBBS..... a band that'll for sure knock you over with their fuzz soaked dark psych wall of noise.....

COBWEBBS has been making a name for themselves this year with a slew of hot no-fi psychedelic rock releases....singles on ANTI-FADE and SATURNO as well as a cassette split with HEIROPHANTS, an appearance on a tape comp for ANTI-FADE and a demos lp COMMUNION................and now to top of their stellar year, COBWEBBS have a new garage burning long player on LOST RACE records entitled ALL AROUND.

dudes, this new album from COBWEBBS is one of the most entrancing slabs of droning space rocking psych I've heard all year.  An lp that just missed the deadline for inclusion as one of the best albums of the year, a list it certainly would've made......

COBWEBBS up the ante with their particularly dark shoegazed, feedback drenched and swampy psych rock n roll.  yes that perfect mixture of scientists, michael yonkers and spacemen 3 psych howl to get yer blood boiling and yer mind expanding......

for those looking for a new band to take you further into the fuzzed out eerie corners of your soul, look no further that ALL AROUND.  this lp is more than just highly recommended.  It's fucking necessary for fans of hazy psych rock.  (yes just as necessary as yer blue cheer, jesus & mary chain or loop albums, and ALL AROUND is what i might call a new classic.....)

Forget your UFO CLUB, NIGHT BEATS, COSMONAUTS and BLACK ANGELS lps that you've been hyping up....... this is the one lp you'll spin all year long.  i promise.

Listen to ALL AROUND below.
And grab it from LOST RACE or PERMANENT RECORDS now.  100 copies is all that were pressed. So don't sleep on it.

for further acid fried adventures
listen to COMMUNION, their demos lp, here -

d watusi - dark party

D WATUSI are about to take the world by storm with their debut lp, DARK PARTY...... out on zine turned label, NASHVILLE'S DEAD.....this new album is a must have for fans of psych, garage and punk.....(ie readers of this blog, yes you most definitely you will love D WATUSI)..........

comprised of four music scenesters from nashville, tennessee who must have awesome record collections (two of them work at THIRD MAN records, one runs NASHVILLE'S DEAD)......D WATUSI brings the plenty of jangle, melody and drugs to their exuberant swirl of psyched out garage burning punk tinged rock n roll.........  these kids are ready to blow up yr turntable and this sounds much more mature / put together than you'd expect from a debut from a young garage band.....i expect to hear more great jams from these guys down the road......

very recommended for those into PAPERHEAD, NATURAL CHILD, RADAR EYES, FUNGI GIRLS, KING TUFF, THE SUFIS and MIKAL CRONIN.....

you'll wanna grab this one before its gone for good......the rumor is that Nashville's Dead isn't pressing up many copies of DARK PARTY.... so don't miss out......

LISTEN TO THE ENTIRE NEW D WATUSI LP BELOW.......

and watch em live at freakin weekend below.....

the bingers - land lobster ep

one of my new favorite bands around chicago is most certainly THE BINGERS......they effortlessly swirl lo-fi garage rock, psych and bubblegum pop into one catchy and hazy mess of a fun time........ watch out all you san fran bands that think you're taking over the world, THE BINGERS are here to proclaim chicago as the beating drunken heart of the garage rock revival.......

what sets THE BINGERS apart from many of these young upstart bands is their sense of melody and songwriting.....many garage bands rely too heavy on the sound of those old garage records without trying to write new songs that are worthy of being pressed to vinyl.......

they just released their debut ep, LAND LOBSTER, and if it's any indication of things to come, you'll be hearing a lot more about the bingers in the near future.......

heavily recommended for those into MAGIC MILK, UH BONES, TY SEGALL, MOONHEARTS, BAD SPORTS and NATURAL CHILD.........

LISTEN TO THE LAND LOBSTER EP BELOW......
grab it digitally, on tape or as a lobster shape usb flash drive (or at least that's the rumor).......

AND WATCH THE BINGERS LIVE AT THE EMPTY BOTTLE BELOW.......

up and comers - UH BONES

there's always a super secret underground rock n roll scene thriving in chicago.... bars like the empty bottle, the burlington and the crown tap give us garage/punk rockers a place to call home, but lately most of the interesting new bands around town have been cutting their teeth in those dirty warehouse spaces and rock n roll houses.... keeping way off the grid.....  and there's quite a few bands in that super secret dark drunk thrashy corner of chicago's rock n roll scene that ought to be much better known, 'cause some of these bands rock more than the bands coming out of those "hip" cities like san fran, los angeles and nyc.......

so let me introduce you to one of these much under appreciated bands......UH BONES....  with one s/t tape ep out and a new 7 inch on its way from RANDY records, these guys are starting to make a splash........ psych coated garage rock fuzz played raw and loud.......indebted to the best of the garage psych bands -- seeds, velvets, 13th floor elevators and count five -- UH BONES take things up a notch and bring plenty of punk attitude, garage thump and awesome guitar fireworks to the classic rock formula.......  fans of the oh sees, ty segall, peoples temple, d watusi and cosmonauts take note.......UH BONES ought to be yr new favorite bands..........

LISTEN TO THEIR S/T EP BELOW........

and WATCH UH BONES PLAY
THE EMPTY BOTTLE BELOW.......

guantanamo baywatch - chest crawl

GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH are one of the newest additions to the DIRTNAP records roster.... and man, nobody brings the demented psychedelic weird pop vibe to surf music like they do.....  sort of in the same camp as THEE CORMANS with their hybrid of blown out surf/garage music, GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH ups the ante by smashing some good ol rock n roll into the mix... as well as adding some punk attitude and volume..... this is mutant pop for the ADD kids who want to fucking party at the beach......

one of the most interesting lps i've come across this year, and that's despite the kitschy art and silly band name.... which after you listen to their new lp CHEST CRAWL, you can't hold against them......

so check out GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH's BOOMERENGA off the new lp below and buy their new lp CHEST CRAWL in may.......

watch them live below.....

meat market - s/t tape

MEAT MARKET is a great new up and coming band from santa cruz with a hell of an awesome name......

they play a kind of raw fuzzed out surf / garage soaked rock n roll..... MEAT MARKET remind me of the mummies and thee cormans...and they're definitely noisy lo-fi peers of the cosmonauts, guantanomo baywatch, plateaus and the night beats...

music to drunkenly surf to, or at least party by the beach to......  their blown out and jangly garage vibe keeps me coming back for more MEAT MARKET day after day.......

they only have one release and it's a s/t tape out on UNDER THE GUN records.......but somebody really needs to put their debut out on vinyl right now.....  totally too good for a small pressing of cassettes......  Meat Market may really be my fave new band of 2012......

click here to sample their s/t tape.....
and here to buy it.....
be quick, it won't be around for long.
limited to 250 copies

drunk pixels - the men // nude beach

THE MEN stopped through chicago this past wednesday to play everyone's favorite dilapidated warehouse space on the south side of chicago, Treasure Town.....  shows there are always quite awesome and this one was no exception.....

NUDE BEACH opened for THE MEN to complete the noisy rock line-up....and they are certainly an up-and-coming power popped DIY punk band to keep yr eyes on.... click here to for an interview NUDE BEACH did for VICE and here for their bandcamp page......

and rock n roll like you were there...

THE MEN

NUDE BEACH

up and comers - MOONRISES

MOONRISES are the newest addition to Chicago's vibrant psych scene..... and they take you way beyond yr average wanna-be psych band.....

call them what you will, but MOONRISES describe themselves as prog / punk / psych / free jazz.......

featuring Plastic Crimewave aka Steve Krakow of longtime CHICAGO spacepunkers Plastic Crimewave Sound, and creator of Drag City's Galactic Zoo Dossier mag on guitar; Ben Billington of free-jazz titans Tiger Hatchery and Wasteland Jazz Unit on drums; and Ms. Libby on keys.

Sublime space-outs change to propulsive noise-assaults on a dime.....eastern drone, guitar affects cascading all around, slowly building into one propulsive ecstatic end of the world jam...
precision drum freakouts plus hypnotic guitars and interstellar organ equals some of the best psych rock you will hear in 2012......

you have to see 'em to believe the glorious noise they make.....

the only way to triangulate what MOONRISES sound like is to list some of the awesome bands they borrow from.....so think CAN, NEU, CAVE, FAUST, ONEIDA, HARMONIA, SUICIDE, FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, HAWKWIND, KING CRIMSON, WOODEN SHJIPS, SILVER APPLES, BLUE CHEER and/ or SPACEMEN 3..... yep MOONRISE will pretty much amaze you.......

watch MOONRISES play live below.....

bad indians - the path home 7 inch

BAD INDIANS are a noisy psychedelic garage rock band from Michigan.... and these up-and-comers are one of my favorite newly discovered bands....

with only handful of singles, tapes and records out, i hope someone offers to put out a new long player from them soon (hozac perhaps?)......their new 7 inch, THE PATH HOME, is just too short to satisfy me....three very catchy fun songs is just not enough from BAD INDIANS....

they remind me of the NIGHT BEATS, the BLACK LIPS, WRONG WORDS and the 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS.......so it's just the kind of great dirty lo-fi psych garage that i love..... i already want to hear more from them......

which if you live near chicago, you can......
BAD INDIANS are playing on Saturday Feb. 4th with HEAVY TIMES and MOONRISES at a secret loft show....(1542 n milwaukee)....

everyone needs to check out this single...
it's very highly recommended......

up and comers - the woollen kits

THE WOOLLEN KITS are a head on musical collision between FLYING NUN and K RECORDS, or more specifically THE CLEAN meeting BEAT HAPPENING.......

much better than some of the amateurish indie pop that gets overly hyped in this fast fast interweb world we live in....

....these guys play with the same melodic zeal that THE MODERN LOVERS or THE TELEVISION PERSONALITIES did.....yet with a bit more garage rock vibe.......

the woollen kits are yet another awesome australian band you need to watch out for.......

and they're touring the US very very soon........

check the dates below and
listen to some WOOLLEN KITS even further below that......

up and comers - E+

featuring two members of DISAPPEARS and the drummer from HEAVY TIMES, E+ is bound to catch some ears and sign to a label soon........

noisy droned out SCI-FI GARAGE POP, as the band puts it, they give CAVE and WOODEN SHJIPS a run for the money....

....if you live in chicago, you've been lucky to see them a handful of times.....but hopefully they'll visit a town near you soon...........

up and comers - ET HABIT

CHICAGO noise rockers ET HABIT mash murky psych rock into free jazz and punk.......

featuring Christmas from MICKEY......ET HABIT is part of the local NOISE scene of CACAW, MAYOR DALEY, RUNNING and BAD DRUGS..... and close noise making cousins to SKOAL KODIAK, PUFFY AREOLAS and CLIPD BEAKS.......

i wish i could drag all of you to some of these awesome house shows in chicago, so you could see ET HABIT in action......you'd love it.

up and comers - apache dropout

APACHE DROPOUT is good fuzzed out psych/garage rock from Indiana....

they play the kind of garage rock that has some soul like the DIRTBOMBS.......

with a heavy dose of drugged out psych like THE OH SEES......

put them in the same camp as some of the other bands i've been writing about lately, the NIGHT BEATS, WRONG WORDS, ROYAL BATHS, COSMONAUTS and BLASTED CANYONS.....wild fun garage/psych.........

they mesh influences like BLUE CHEER, VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE SEEDS,  SHADOWS OF THE KNIGHT, THE PRETTY THINGS, 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS and BLUES MAGOOS  without sounding like a cheap garage rock knock off......... THIS IS THE REAL THING.  don't believe the critics who think all these new bands are just rehashing old cliches.......

YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT APACHE DROPOUT......... there's a new 7 inch out on TROUBLE IN MIND and a s/t lp on FAMILY VINEYARD......

listen below..........

up and comers - OBN IIIs

OBN IIIs is ORVILLE from BAD SPORTS side project........
trashy wild garage / punk...........
the proto-punk of the MC5 and the drunken rock n roll of johnny thunders are definite influences, but you can also compare OBN IIIs to fellow TEXAS rockers marked men, john wesley coleman and high tension wires ........

OBN IIIs have started with a bang, releasing a handful of killer 7 inches this year......and are now set to unleash a new album and destroy the kids at GONER FEST.........

here's how REVOLVER describes THE ONE AND ONLY lp,  OUT SEPTEMBER 6 on TIC TAC TOTALLY RECORDS........

OBN IIIs drop a seriously heavyweight album following three killer singles/EPs. Some of the best mid-paced punk rock of the “City Slang” vibe...and one of the best live bands of recent memory...now flirting with a Sabbath-caliber weight in the sound, added snot-nosed attitude, and tighter grooves. The resulting record is an absolutely-no-bullshit, tight-yet-screaming wild, rock record full of the wicked, double-deep-fried-guitars searing in and out of ORVILLE’s way. All the primal attack and hooky sheen of the self-titled EP is all over this thing along with that dark, nihilistic affect of “Mark On You,” now planted with heavier footing. The “Texas-tinged IVY GREEN” tag still applies, but adds a Vamps meets Stooges swagger big time. Frying the shit out of stuff where appropriate. And a lot more howling and magma comes spewing up through any potential crack in the surface here. Highlights include EVERYTHING. Recorded by Orville in hot-as-fuck Austin, Texas, as if enough sweat wasn’t baked into these tapes.

GO BUY THIS LP WHEN IT COMES OUT........highly recommended!

up and comers - the whines

when one of yr favorite musicians shares his/her favorite bands, you ought to listen....... you often get turned onto new obscure bands.....

at the end of 2010, TY SEGALL told brooklynvegan his top five records of the year......  all of them made tiny groove's list as well, with one notable exception......THE WHINES' with their debut lp, HELL TO PLAY......

THE WHINES transcend the lo-fi tag with real, honest songs that are not hipster genre exercises or an act of desperate trend hopping. Hell To Play is a major leap forward in fidelity and songwriting from their 7-inch. Anchored by KARIANNE’s hypnotic voice and basslines and colored by JESSE’s raw guitar and BOBBY’s primitive drumming. Tracks were recorded alternately by ROB & ROD from EAT SKULL with one track recorded by KYLE from METH TEETH/MEERCAZ and two tracks recorded by the band. This LP brings to mind things like Neil Young, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Dead Moon and Cheater Slicks filtered through contemporary ears/minds. Sequenced like a classic album with moody rock songs, melted psych garage tunes and strange, haunting heartbreakers. Play this over and over. You will be rewarded.  REVOLVER distro

HELL TO PLAY is quite the noise pop / garage record.....  heavy on the analog/lo-fi/fuzz sound that's hip right now, but with good pop songwriting under all the layers of noise.......

reminds me of white fence, times new viking, psychedelic horseshot, sebadoh, home blitz and ty segall (of course)......

the whines are a promising young band that you ought to watch out for..........

click here to grab THE WHINES' HELL TO PLAY lp (2010)....

and watch below........

up and comers- tyler jon tyler

tyler jon tyler is catchy jangle pop from chicago.

they remind me of sleater-kinney and the vaselines, but less pacific northwest indie and more chicago garage rock.......(members from the ponys and the daily void, fill out the rhythm section.)

with one single on TROUBLE IN MIND records and an lp out on SLOW FIZZ records......tyler jon tyler is just getting started, but i don't think anything will stop the spread of their infectious pop shambles......

usually pop songs have so much gloss and production, it makes you sick.......but the loose fun bouncy songs of tyler jon tyler get stuck in yer head just like a radio hit, but with all the energy thats lacking on the airwaves........

these kids just might be chicago's best kept musical secret......so check em out.....

click here to grab their self titled debut lp......

and watch their awesome RECORD STORE DAY performance from 2010.......

up and comers- LAST YEAR's MEN

LAST YEAR"S MEN is catchy garage rock from chapel hill, north carolina......

for fans of ty segall, spider bags, strange boys and/or the reigning sound..... whom they opened up for this spring in chicago at the empty bottle.......

rowdy drunken southern tinged rock n roll, the kind that always catches my ear....

so you need to buy their debut lp, SUNNY DOWN SNUFF, on churchkey records if you can find it.....

and watch out, these kids have enough talent to keep our turntables happy for many more albums to come......

watcb some of their chaos live below.......

and watch their mini-documentary via noisey.com and vice......

up and comers- midwest beat

so its no surprise that i'm a fan of jangly garage pop.  and i'm always a sucker for more of it.....and i'm pleasantly surprised when i run across a band that does it so well, that i can't believe i haven't heard of them yet........

MIDWEST BEAT is a power popped mix of the zombies, the kinks, the byrds and of course big star....... catchy hooks and analog production.......  put them next to the peoples temple and the night beats in the wave of jangle psych garage bands that actually write good songs instead of hiding behind reverb, feedback and the much loved label of lo-fi........   dusty medical records has done a good job forcing MIDWEST BEAT upon the world......

so click here to grab MIDWEST BEAT's s/t 2x7 inch from 2008......and go buy their new lp "gone not lost" out this summer on dusty medical (which is a label you all should check out)..........

midwest beat is my sunny sunday afternoon jam........

watch/listen below.......

up and comers: RUNNING

RUNNING are noisy art damaged trash punk......from chicago.  think pink & brown, DNA and the flying luttenbachers.....  with a couple of self released cassettes and a very limited lp from permanent records, not many kids outside of chicago know about RUNNING, but everyone absolutely should......

watch out for a new lp on captcha records later this year......

check out some live footage below......

(....a video of the making of their screen printed album art....featuring a track from the RUNNING LP on permanent records......)
