THE BLACK LIPS have just released a new single, SICK OF YOU on VICE RECORDS...... the title song and the B-side Dance with You are both extra songs from last year's ARABIA MOUNTAIN recording session and both songs are fuckin' killer......
highly recommended, of course, for all you Black Lips fans.....
THE GAYE BLADES are a jangly power pop/garage rock side project featuring members of the Black Lips, Gentleman Jesse and his Men and the Carbonas.... if you like any of these bands, you need to buy this lp....very limited.....wildly fun and obnoxious......
thanks to NORTON RECORDS for releasing this crazy riot of a full length......
watch some live footage and an interview below.... go buy it now before its out of print....... (also the gaye blades have two singles out on ROBS HOUSE that you need....)
scion may or may not be encroaching on our beloved garage rock scene, but free music from our favorite bands is never a terrible thing.
so i guess we owe a thanks to scion for this singles series.......
as far a i can tell this is every release in the scion a/v club garage/punk 7 inch collection...... (they have also released a few other rock, metal and hiphop singles, but that's less interesting....)
(grouped as another .zip
so the spits fans can just grab these two releases.....) the spits "haunted fang castle" ep (which is quite weird)& the spits / dan melchior split
*fat possum records just released a best of from jay reatard's synth punk band, the LOST SOUNDS. entitled BLAC STATIC, the lp is comprised on songs hand picked by the rest of the band, alicja (also of black sunday and river city tanlines) and rich (from lover!).....
make sure you grab this album, cause like all things jay reatard, especially his lost sounds-era, are hard to come by...... though goner records may eventually reissue all the REATARDS lps...which if you havent bought the recent TEENAGE HATE reissue, go get now it........
*in the red records is set to rerelease some black lips titles in august. larry must of acquired the rights from vice, who didn't seem to interested in keeping the black lips titles in stock, for some undisclosed reason.
in the red will rerelease GOOD BAD NOT EVIL on lp, as well as issuing 200 MILLION THOUSAND and LOS VALIENTES DEL MONDO NEUVO (their live lp from TIJUANA) on vinyl for the first time. finally.
i hate it when you have to go buy a goddamn cd to get the album. (personally not a fan of buying music in the CLOUD.....but thats just me.....)
*also in the red is planning to release two new mark sultan lps this fall/winter. "whenever i want" and shortly there after "whatever i want".... a cd version will include both lps.......
mark sultan (aka bbq) is also rereleasing his $ lp on in the red, after acquiring the rights from last gang.......$ is a difficult lp to find, but it is out there and worth the money.........
*and the good tunes just keep coming.......hozac records is about to release lps by HEAVY TIMES and RADAR EYES, two of my fav chicago garage noisemakers...... and hozac is also planning a split 7 inch with the black lips and mark sultan.....probably later on this year...
*KING KHAN just played two shows with GRIS GRIS in chicago this weekend. we can only hope they stopped in a studio somewhere to record some jams.....
their sets were some spastic garage psych...with as many gris gris songs as king khan tunes....
much like the almighty defenders side project where the black lips were joined with king khan and bbq in the studio..... who doesn't like garage punk supergroups..........
and yeah do yerself a favor and pick up a GRIS GRIS lp.....
anyway these shows were fucking great.........if you missed them, watch the second show at the empty bottle below......
the black lips always seem to induce a near riot every time they place in chicago--a state of frenzied enthusiasm most bands can never ask for from a crowd.
and that edge of mayhem might stem from the all ages audience mixing with the hard drinking older kids, but when the black lips break into 'bad kids' it doesn't matter where the show is or who's in the audience, no one wants to behave.....
the black lips played their hits, and songs from across their catalog as always. the black lips aren't one of those bands that refuses to play anything older than the last album....
they rocked quite a few new jams from their upcoming arabia mountain lp....which has them leaning more towards power pop and jangling garage than the lo-fi killed by death influenced garage punk of the past.
the new songs garnered less excitement from the crowd, but i dare say that once everyone has the new lp that won't be the case....'go out and get it' could be their next raucous anthem......
anyway, the black lips are always worth the cover charge.
make sure you go see them if you can, and even if you have to drive a couple of hours. not every band plays shows like it might be their last.....
the video below is the black lips' last song of the evening, and yes it's a shit video, but i don't have a real camera, so try to enjoy it anyway......
(ps thanks to gaper's block for the additional photos, you know the better of the two photos in the post had to be borrowed from someone who is a professional.)
the new lp is due in spring/summer of this year, here's a clip on them in the studio...
and oh yeah......the black lips will be inciting a riot in a town near you soon......(with the vivian girls along for the ride)

click here for the gentelmen jesse and his men LP. a great off-shoot band of my hotlanta favs, the carbonas, and often tour mates of the black lips, gentlemen jesse is jangly power pop garage that'll keep you humming all night long.......
on tour with the strange boys, both of which bands i'm about to go see at the empty bottle tonight.....
king khan, mark sultan and the black lips recorded an LP together in berlin. down time with friends well spent , i'd probably just have a hangover to show, not a new collaborative project........
the LP is set for release of vice records on september 22......
above is a picture from their first performance at north by northwest music fest. below is the track list. i cannot fucking wait. all of these guys are insane........

the black lips show lived up to its chaotic hype. an auditorium packed with close to 800 people going bonkers for their sloppy garage rock sounds, dancing and crowd surfing as if the black lips had cast a spell over the event.
but their tour mates may have upstaged them. gentlemen jesse and his men, fellow atantla rockers, played a clean fast power pop set that had you singing along to the lyrics by the second verse of every song regardless of hearing them for the first time. the band, a side project now mainstay for one of the members of atlanta's carbonas, should be the next big thing. taking off where the exploding hearts were headed after their sadly cut short career, gentlemen jesse is super bouncy catchy 60s power garage rock that makes you want to forget that the world is more than drinking girls and partying. they play much tighter than the black lips and carry through with much of the same energy. where the black lips head off into psych rock, gentlemen jesse puts on the cheap trick.
look out for gentlemen jesse in the future. they are worth the cover.
and yes i decided the black lips can live up to the hype, which is difficult to do. the lips just might save america's youth from their screamo tendencies and that would make the world a better place for sure.
going to see the black lips tonight. should be awesome.
there is something transfixing about their new album "200 million..." which their previous effort lacked. seems more whole and focused. but what appeals to me about the black lips is there rough edged bluesy garage punk. often attacked for lack of substance, these guys offer unpretentious rock n roll that is seldom found today. punk bands know the stance, but they often play the standard pop punk, instead of taking the same approach to other subgenres. the black lips' so called flower punk is interesting for its mix of standard fare garage and 60s rock with psychedelic and post punk elements.
the black lips don't always translate well on their albums (check their live disc which at times is both awful and riotously good). that's why i hope the show tonight surpasses my expectations.
