warm soda - someone for you

i was sorry to hear about the implosion of BARE WIRES, but at least we didn't have to wait long for matthew melton to get back on his feet and start a new band......that group being WARM SODA....picking up where IDLE DREAMS, the last bare wires' lp left off, WARM SODA gives us a white hot blast of power popped glam punk goodness......their catchy and in yer face the debut long player, SOMEONE FOR YOU, out now on CASTLE FACE RECORDS, is just the bolt outta the gate that i wanted to hear from these san fran kids.......

there's plenty of bands mining the power pop classics from big star to the shoes these days (ie, gentleman jesse, barreracudas, games, cozy, etc) as well as many others digging deep into the glorious days of glam from t-rex through the new york dolls (see mickey, cheap time, exploding hearts and others), but few boil glam, punk and glam done to such a sugary sweet and yet loud and raw concentrate that'll get you amped up, dancing around and singing at the top of yr lungs all at the same time......

THIS IS ANGSTY BUBBLEGUM PUNK ROCK THAT'LL EARWORM ITS WAY DEEP INTO YER BRAIN AND NEVER LEAVE.

WARM SODA'S LP IS GONNA BE YER NEW FAVE JAM OF THE MONTH.......

those bare wires albums weren't always perfect, and their frequent line up changes somewhat hampered the band, so i'm stoked that matthew has found a solid group with a similar goal in mind and that may just make WARM SODA unstoppable...... cuz so far, they're hittin' nothing but home runs.......

recommended so very very much.

PREVIEW SOMEONE FOR YOU HERE....

punk rock classics - the zodiac killers

every band GREG LOWERY was in is worth checking out, from SUPERCHARGER to the RIP OFFS and most certainly his last band, the ZODIAC KILLERS...... who played more the same addicting killer no-frills trashy punk rock as his more well know bands......  ZODIAC KILLERS released four absolutely fast loud and riotous as fuck albums during their short run as a band, all of them absolutely necessary additions to your collection....(though i doubt you'll have an easy time tracking them all down, i know i am........)   indebted to the ramones, damned, angry samoans, pagans and adverts as well as the other early punk greats, ZODIAC KILLERS knocked out some of my favorite punk songs of all time.....

and they influenced everyone from the carbonas to the marked men.....i'm pretty sure that dirtnap, hozac and tic tac totally records wouldn't exist if not for the no-fi punk trail blazed by greg rip off's various bands and seminal label, RIP OFF RECORDS......

file the ZODIAC KILLERS next to the MUMMIES, OBLIVIANS, THEE HEADCOATS and GORIES in the PUNK ROCK CLASSICS SECTION OF YOUR RECORD COLLECTION CUZ THAT'S WHERE THEY BELONG........

and check out some choice songs from all four
ZODIAC KILLERS albums below,
   and good luck crate digging......

not so quiet on the western front (reissue)

ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES and MAXIMUM ROCKnROLL have teamed up to reissue the absolutely classic collection of the early 80s northern Californian hardcore punk scene, NOT SO QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT....and its fucking essential, period.

this double lp of sordid sonics showcasing the madness happening in early 80's northern california (and nevada) hardcore punk scene is the quintessential document of that particular geographic region and the punk uprising happening there.  holy shit, the tracklisting alone is enough to get you amped up enough to run out to yer local record shop!!!!!

with some better known acts like DEAD KENNEDYS, FLIPPER and 7 SECONDS dropping some mean tracks, the goodness doesn't stop there..........there's 47 bands jam packed into 74 minutes of a who's who of the early SF punk rock scene......and with little played feral gems from almost forgotten bands like MDC, Impatient Youth, Angst, Domino Theory, Section 8, Vegenence and Vicious Circle filling the double album, there's plenty of new bands to introduce yourself to.......

just as the "Busted At OZ" (Chicago), "Flex Your Head" (DC), "Decline Of The Western Civilization" (LA) and "This Is Boston Not LA" (Boston) comps were the defining soundtracks of their respective locales, NOT SO QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT is your history lesson on Northern California punk rock in all its anti-reagan spitting drunk glory.........a scene that incidentally had a lasting impact on punk rock everywhere, just as much or more than those other cities and their hardcore scenes.......

hardcore punk in its earliest fastest and loudest incarnation,
this comp is hands down recommended......

thanks maximum rocknroll and alternative tentacles
for reissuing this classic....

iggy pop and the stooges - a documentary film

THE STOOGES are hands down one of the best rock n roll bands of all time...... all three of their albums are MUST OWN CLASSICS, so if you don't have STOOGES, FUNHOUSE or RAW POWER, RUN OUT TO YR LOCAL RECORD SHOP AND GRAB THEM IMMEDIATELY...... even their chaotic live lps have attained legendary status, from METALLIC KO to A THOUSAND LIGHTS.....

the stooges kick started the punk rock explosion and their music remains as powerful, fresh and menacing as the day it was recorded....  i needn't say much more, but i'd be remiss to have a music blog and not have at least one post dedicated to one of the most influential rock bands of all time..... after all, it seems like every other band i review is carrying on the stooges tradition in one way or another.......

so, for all you stooges fans and tiny grooves fans out there, WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY ON IGGY POP AND THE STOOGES BELOW...... complete with interviews from iggy as well as both asheton brothers, classic early show footage and some video of their first reunion tour..... probably not the best film that could be made on such a classic band, but very interesting all the same.......

follakzoid - ii

SACRED BONES has just released what may one of the best psych/krautrock/experimental albums of the year from chile's FOLLAKZOID, entitled simply II.......

this is haunting motorik psych rock that'll for sure induce a trance-like state of mind......
gusts of droned guitar, swirls of synth, slow building yet hurricane force bass grooves and a drummer that pulls together the thundering elements of the band, just in time to let the songs rip and drag you deep into the middle of the chaos...... FOLLAKZOID gently lead you into their new album, but by track two, you'll completely hooked, maybe even before the opening song is over....forever destined to be a junkie coming back for hit after hit of their new propulsive otherworldly psych explosions...

fans of CAVE, WOODEN SHJIPS, CAMERA, LUMERIANS and VERMA will NEED to dive head first into the turbulent waters of FOLLAKZOID's stormy brew of psychedelic experimental rock......

i just can't stop spinning this new FOLLAKZOID lp and i know it'll be the same for you......
totally recommended and one of the best lps i've heard all month long......
grab your copy now from SACRED BONES !!!!!!!!!!

thee oops - happy charlie 2x7in

I always have to ask myself where and how Slovenly finds such awesome completely unknown European bands on a constant basis (Acid Baby Jesus and JC Satan for example).  Who knows, really?

But they've done it again, this time with a too fast to live, too young to die blast of scuzzy punk rawwk from Italy's THEE OOPS  Hardcore punk at its pure essence, this double shot double 7 inch, HAPPY CHARLIE, is raging fucking speed addled mayhem I haven't heard since Black Flag and Minor Threat.

Holy shit, this one's a keeper.  This one's even more in your face than their previous album, Taste of Zimbabwe.  With a punk so furious, you'll be flipping this record over and over and over again non stop, shotgunning PBRs in between sides, and maybe even forming your own mosh pit if you have too.

This is a punk rock party boiled down to four sides of LOUD RIOTOUS PUNK ROCK just like it should be.  (there's even an early beastie boys cover to keep the riot going.)

Thee Oops might just be the lost delinquent child of the early 80s west coast punk scene.  If you have albums from the Germs, Fear, JFA or Negative Approach, grab this Happy Charlie EP now.

Punk rock is still alive and frothing at the mouth.
thank god......

white wires - wwiii

seems like there's never enough time to listen to all the good music that comes out.....every day there's a new lp, single or music video from old favorites to young upstart new bands all vying for my attention.....and in this musical overload, sometimes good albums get overlooked.....  this was the case with the new WHITE WIRES lp WWIII out late last summer on DIRTNAP RECORDS......  if you've been reading tiny grooves for any amount of time, you know the white wires' power popped garage punk is some of the catchiest and most addicting rock n roll being played either side of the us/canadian border......so it's more than a shame that it took me so very long to post on the new album....

these ottawa kids just won't slow down or back down, and their third lp is chock full of more sugary sweet punk anthems to sing along to at the top of yer lungs.......   taking their cues from bouncy punks heroes such as the undertones, adverts, ramones and the jam as well as the classic power poppers like the shoes, the records, the knack, the speedies and the romantics, white wires craft garage punk equivalent to cocaine for yer ears.......try not to pogo around while listening to this new album......

highly recommended, just like everything else the white wires have released........

and super suggested for those infatuated with the mean jeans, steve adamyk band, bad sports, needles//pins, mind spiders, barreracudas, games, carbonas and jay reatard.......
ie, anyone who needs their punk over caffeinated, melodic and fun......

outside world - seaside nowhere

outta the ashes of BRAIN IDEA has risen the newest must hear band from the chicago scene, OUTSIDE WORLD..... who play a scuzzed-up jangle-popped indie rock that'll get you humming almost instantaneously...... NIGHT PEOPLE has just released OUTSIDE WORLD's second tape, SEASIDE NOWHERE, and man oh man does yr boombox need this ep now......

i haven't heard a noisy infectious indie rock killers like this in quite some time..... indebted to kiwi pop, 80s college jangle and 90s slacker rock, this tape just won't leave my stereo..... and i expect nothing but good things from OUTSIDE WORLD down the road....so totally crossing my fingers for a proper debut long player sometime this year.....

if you could take husker du, the clean, sebadoh, pavement, soft boys, gbv, the bats and superchunk and smash them into one band, you'd get OUTSIDE WORLD.......  fuzzed up basement indie rock jams like the old days before the arcade fire's of the world made "indie" go mainstream, soundtrack car commercials and bore you to death..... (sorry but that's my feeling about most indie rock bands these days.....)

recommended for those into fresh and onlys, boomgates, woods, the bitters, heavy times, kurt vile, sic alps, the mantles and radar eyes......ie, anyone who needs a dose of unbridled lo-fi anthemic rock n roll in their lives....

grab this tape from NIGHT PEOPLE now.....
it's super limited..... and won't be available for very long........

the undertones - here comes the summer

THE UNDERTONES wrote what are perhaps two of the best rock songs of all time, TEENAGE KICKS and HERE COMES THE SUMMER...both from their self titled debut record from 1979... a record that's hands down a punk rock classic, if not one of the best two minute three chord chainsaw pop lps of all time.....

the undertones didn't stick around for very long, but they left in their wake a slew of power popped punk singles that not only i can't ever get enough of but remain fresh as they day they were written......

if you don't know about the undertones yet,
now is the time to introduce yerself......

watch the BBC documentary HERE COMES THE SUMMER: THE STORY OF THE UNDERTONES below in its entirety -

velvet underground & nico by castle face and friends

only CASTLE FACE RECORDS could assemble enough awesome psych / garage bands together in one place to cover such a classic album as VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO.....

with reinterpretations by Kelley Stoltz, Warm Soda, Ty Segall, Blasted Canyons (featuring Jeremy Cox of Royal Baths), White Fence, The Fresh & Onlys, Burnt Ones, The Mallard, Here Comes the Here Comes, K Dylan Edrich, and Thee Oh Sees, CASTLE FACE AND FRIENDS have put together one helluva catchy never-gonna-leave-your-turntable cover album of the band all these bands are obviously way way indebted to.....

a project like this wouldn't usually be my thing, but VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO BY CASTLE FACE AND FRIENDS is chock full of essential covers from the best of the best right now in the american garage scene........ and getting bands like the oh sees and white fence to cover velvet underground songs? yeah well of course i'm gonna be into it.....

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......to say the least

unmanned ship - for whom the bowl tolls

rising from the dilapidated warehouse spaces and dark alleys of chicago's house show scene is a forceful new monster of a band that you must check out now, UNMANNED SHIP..... they play stoner noise caked space rock like you've never heard before, super mesmerizing, all instrumental, genre bending, creepy and loud as fuck.......  and their new lp FOR WHOM THE BOWL TOLLS out on ROTTED TOOTH is one of the best lps birthed from the unruly chicago noise scene in quite some time.....

sharing members with fellow scenesters OOZING WOUND, you'd be right to expect an unholy racket emanating from UNMANNED SHIP.......  similar to the feedback laced sonic explorations of chicago's other noise makers, CACAW, MAKO SICA, RUNNING, NONES and MAYOR DALEY, UNMANNED SHIP teeter on the knife edge of psych blowouts, stoner metal, prog pyrotechnics and noisy post rock....swirling together quite the heavy riffing groove that you'll wanna spin over and over again.....

need more words to get you to check out UNMANNED SHIP....???
read what lance from permanent records has to say about
the newest banger from ROTTED TOOTH.......
"Unmanned Ship are active stoners.  The difference between active stoners and lazy stoners is obvious.  The active ones do cool shit while they’re baked and the lazy ones do lame shit.  Unmanned Ship stay busy as bees in Chicago.  One of the rad things the Unmanned Ship dudes do is make fucking killer instrumental rock jams.  The three of ‘em concoct quite a hypnotic brew.  It’s the kind of bubbly, dark, sweet porter I bee nectar fermenting into at the end of summer under less honey-friendly conditions.  Coincidentally, their brand of stoner rock has the geometric and psychedelic qualities of a honeycomb.  These grooves are repetitive and technical, but never too flashy and by no means boring. A grounded rhythm section is nicely complemented by hydrodynamic guitar lines and extraterrestrial effects.  Not exactly what I’d deem space rock, but a bit arthropodic to be sure.  In fact, this whole record would score an Apoidean documentary quite nicely.  With the majority of the footage shot within the hive and featuring a substantial amount of bee carnage of course, this would make the PERFECT soundtrack to a Planet Earth chapter on bee fights.  I’d buy that for a dollar!  This hyper limited, hand-screened, hand-numbered LP full of heavy, buzzing, intoxicating rock is HIGH-ly recommended for stoned drones.  The Queen would never approve, but fuck that bitch – she’s fucking all of us."
fans of lightning bolt, sunn o))), unholy two, sleep, pelican, spacemen 3, boris, don cabellero, the melvins and liquorball will find something to get excited about in UNMANNED SHIP's new lp.......

yes....it's another highly recommended release from ROTTED TOOTH........

tv smith and the adverts - we who wait

THE ADVERTS were one of the greatest bands to explode outta london in the original heyday of the punk movement......though usually overlooked in comparison to the sex pistols, the damned, the clash and others, the adverts' first album CROSSING THE RED SEA WITH THE ADVERTS is one of punk rock's classic fucking lps.....influencing more musicians than you can even list in one blog post.....

and TV SMITH, the adverts' leading man, may be punk's most original and creative songwriter.... from his proto punk band SLEAZE (which is getting some reissue love from SING SING RECORDS) through the adverts' short glorious run and subsequent burn out, and through his post adverts bands, EXPLORERS and CHEAP, all the way to his solo albums, tv smith has been fighting the good fight with biting new rock n roll for years......  he's still up and at it (and very worth the ticket price if he ever rolls through yer town)

lest anyone forget his place in the punk rock canon, the BBC released this awesome documentary titled WE WHO WAIT, so you and me can get all the gritty back story from the legends, TV SMITH and his great snotty punk band, THE ADVERTS.......

peoples temple - more for the masses

after pressing plant delays and a long anxious wait, we finally get to throw a new PEOPLES TEMPLE lp on the turntable....and i couldn't be more excited........the new album, titled MORE FOR THE MASSES, is brought to us once again by the fine folks at HOZAC RECORDS and is chock full of psych bent hazy garage rockers that'll get you higher and higher........

these lansing, michigan kids killed it with 2011's SONS OF STONE and MORE FOR THE MASSES is, if possible, even better yet........ something must be in the dirty water of michigan, cuz everyone from there seems to be a natural at this kinda of all out garage burning rock n roll.......

their new lp mixes plenty of SEEDS, LOVE, YARDBIRDS and STONES garage power with the deeper darker psych of bands like PUBLIC NUISANCE, 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS, NAZZ and LOLLIPOP SHOPPE..... yes plenty of love for the good ol' NUGGETS set of 60s bands, yet PEOPLES TEMPLE does not sound dated or retro......if anything, MORE FOR THE MASSES stands outside the race of time..... their hazy psych is indebted to shoegaze, britpop and space rock as well as those classic records, so MORE FOR THE MASSES is an epic head expanding journey of its own.......

recommended for those into NIGHT BEATS, THE OH SEES, PURLING HISS, UFO CLUB, COSMONAUTS and/or BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE.......but really anyone who needs to buy one psych record this year, ought to grab the new one from PEOPLES TEMPLE......  it's a repeat listen for sure (which is a rarer and rarer thing in our over saturated music world these days.......)

fuzz - this time i got a reason 7 inch

well the secret's outta the bag......the mysterious new psych band FUZZ, who just recently released their debut single THIS TIME I GOT A REASON via the always reliable TROUBLE IN MIND RECORDS, is none other than TY SEGALL and CHARLIE MOONHEART rocking a couple new jams in their spare time......

off from tour, these guys have banged out two new ripping psych garage stompers like it was nothing...... released just at the end of 2012, THIS TIME I HAD A REASON made number 2 on tiny grooves' singles of the year list, and that was amidst some pretty stiff competition.......  but you know FUZZ floors you with burning guitar freakouts not heard since the heyday of 70s rock heroes, black sabbath and blue cheer......so it's not surprising that this debut 7 inch blasted it's way into my top records from last year.......

and since charlie and ty have played together in bands for years now, you'd expect for something this cohesive and epic from them......after all they were both in the EPSILONS before ty went solo and recruited charlie for his new band......  and if the ty segall band's lp SLAUGHTERHOUSE was any indication, FUZZ has plenty more acid soaked psych rock bangers up their sleeves just waiting to get pressed to vinyl........

and we might just get that this year.......the rumor is that after a year chock full of new records and non-stop touring, ty and company are gonna slow it down a bit this year.  well sort of.  mikal cronin is set to release his second solo lp on merge later this year, and while he's off touring to support that, we may well just get more FUZZ....... and that my friend would be a good thing......

we all need more FUZZ in our life........

first pressing of this single is outta print, but a second press is on the way.....it's also available as a download if you need this much rock in a more mobile fashion...... so click here to check out TROUBLE IN MIND's site for more deets........

heavy times - i'm single 7 inch

so the wait is almost over........a new HEAVY TIMES lp is just about here....... brought to us by my favorite noise mongers HOZAC RECORDS of course.......   and since they know we need a fix soon, hozac has given us junkies a little teaser in the form of a new banging 7 inch from HEAVY TIMES entitled I'M SINGLE...... both their previous albums, DEAD on ROTTED TOOTH and JACKER on HOZAC, thrashed their way into my top of the year lists, and if this single is any indication, HEAVY TIMES' forthcoming noise popped drunk punk album is gonna make that list too........

I'M SINGLE is three new tracks all worthy of the A side stamp...... what more could you ask for than a couple more fuzz coated melodies slamming into yer brain with this kinda punk rock fury????? and man oh man does HEAVY TIMES deliver.....their mix of punk, noise and post punk is so infectious that I'M SINGLE won't leave your turntable for quite some time.......

most importantly though is the fact that HEAVY TIMES keeps the unruly spirit of rock n roll alive in a time when most bands clamor to stay true to trendy subgenre labels and not much else.....

taking their cues from the wipers, guided by voices, dead moon, supercharger and husker du, HEAVY TIMES is paving their own way and leaving in their wake some of the best noise punk anthems you can get yer hands on.....

this is seriously one of the best singles you'll come across all year long.....
so don't sleep on it, grab a copy from HOZAC now.....
it'll be out of print quick.........

forget your times new viking and no age records.......
HEAVY TIMES IS THE FUCKING REAL DEAL.......

husker du - llve in london 1985

thanks to the internet, we can transport ourselves back to the heyday of punk and post punk, and on a cold winter day, what could pass the time better than watching old HUSKER DU concert footage?

one of the best punk / underground rock bands of all time, HUSKER DU was a force to be reckoned with live........ and below is a perfect example - a riotous show from london in 1985..... right before FLIP YOUR WIG and directly after the release of NEW DAY RISING......both classic fucking albums.......  and not to sell themselves short they rip through plenty of high octane favorites from ZEN ARCADE, EVERYTHING FALLS APART and METAL CIRCUS as well.........  even if you've never listened to HUSKER DU, you'll be more than stoked to pogo around to this show........

after all, they influenced everyone from the noise poppers to the grunge rockers, and everyone in between.....yes even the college rockers, emo kids and pop punkers.....  anything with the HUSKER DU name on it is highly recommended by TINY GROOVES......'cause they broke up before they could fuck things up and left quite a string of important records in their wake, ones that still sound fresh today.....

replacements - color me obsessed

THE REPLACEMENTS were one of the greatest underground rock n roll bands of the 80s, and maybe one of the best bands ever.....their albums, SORRY MA, STINK and LET IT BE are forever cemented in my list of top LPs of all time.......

so when i heard that they were finally getting the documentary treatment, i was more than stoked...  COLOR ME OBSESSED is riotously fun oral history about one of the only rock bands that matter.... the film follows the REPLACEMENTS from their unruly start as young punks through their drunken heyday as college radio heroes to their unceremonious breakup at a show in chicago and their influence on just about everyone who started a band in their wake.......

you won't find a band with more rock n roll stories than the 'mats......
