the tearjerkers - bad moon rising

BIG LEGAL MESS did us all a favor by reissuing some of JACK OBLIVIANS' various post OBLIVIANS, post COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS, side projects and solo lps.....most notably the killer southern friend bluesy garage punk lp by THE TEARJERKERS entitled BAD MOON RISING....... originally released on SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY in 2001, this lp might just be JACK OBLIVIANS best, most RnR effort outside those now legendary bands he's more famous for.....

i highly suggest picking up any of Jack O's albums....but you should start with BAD MOON RISING.....my favorite of all his albums..... totally scuzzy, bluesy and soul scorching all at the same time.....

just listen to a few tracks below...... and then surf over to BIG LEGAL MESS to grab a copy for yerself!!!!   a super classic album, that you can play over and over and over again!!!!!

rising outta the ashes of the GIBSON BROS, the trash rockabilly garage outfit from COLOMBUS OHIO, was one of my fav garage punk bands, 68 COMEBACK.....

most people seem to have forgotten about 68 COMEBACK, and with all these younger bands tapping into the old CRYPT, SYMPATHY and IN THE RED bands as influences, everyone should not overlook JEFFREY EVANS' great  lo-fi bluesy garage punk band.......

this is great fucking music, LOUD, RAUCOUS, SOULFUL DRUNKEN ROCK N ROLL.... you need 68 COMEBACK in yr collection......

i put them in the same list of all time great garage punk bands with the gories, oblivians, and cheater slicks.......

the scientists- blood river red

the scientists are one of those cult favorites that most people just don't know anything about.  less known than their contemporaries the birthday party (mostly because nick cave went onto to success on his own), the scientists are a must listen.  formed in australia in the late 70s and continuing on into most of the 80s, the scientists mix of garage, post punk, noised drenched blues and gothic proto-punk that predated grunge and much of the darker indie rock to come.  

if yr a fan of the chrome cranks, the birthday party, gun club, mudhoney, radio birdman, the stooges or tv ghost....the scientists ought to be in yr collection now......

The Treasures of Long Gone John

The Treasures of Long Gone John is a feature-length documentary film by Gregg Gibbs that chronicles the eccentric art and musical obsessions of indie record producer and self-described "anti-mogul", Long Gone John. The product of a troubled childhood, John found success through the establishment of the record label, Sympathy for the Record Industry. During the past seventeen years he has single-handedly released over 750 records by over 550 bands and helped launch the careers of The Oblivians, The Dwarves, The White Stripes, Rocket from the Crypt, and The Donnas, among many others.

Along the way, he has compulsively amassed a vast collection of art and pop ephemera, in addition to starting the Necessaries Toy Foundation.

The film explores the work of several of the artists he collects and collaborates with, including: Todd Schorr, Mark Ryden, Camille Rose Garcia and Robert Williams. The film also features a wall-to-wall soundtrack of over 40 bands with artwork by 20 artists, including original animation and time lapse photography. THe Treasures of Long Gone John is an enticing trip through the independent record industry and the Los Angeles "lowbrow" art scene.

"The legend, as recounted in the liner notes, is that the BAD TIMES album was recorded in New Orleans in 1999 in one all-day session after a single day's writing and rehearsal byEric Oblivian (Oblivians, Goner Records mogul), Jay Reatard, and King Louie (King Louie One Man Band), all of whom were looking to purge some personal demons more than they were planning on releasing the results.

Originally issued as a limited-edition LP before the CD version (same songs, different running order) came out on Sympathy for the Record Industry in 2003, BAD TIMES is more of a curio for fans of the kids' main projects than it is a proper album. The four-track cassette recorder used to document the sessions is stretched well beyond its capacity, to the point where songs like "You're So Lewd" are just barely visible behind the wall of distortion. Despite the supposedly dismal circumstances of its recording, ...BAD TIMES is what it is: a punk jam session by three friends made for their own amusement. It's a mistake to expect more out of this album than it can offer, but it's a great loud fun listen on its own merits." ---ALLMUSIC entry (slight re-edit from tiny grooves)
