need a conscience expanding dose of heavy psych?  well TJUTJUNA has you covered!!!!!!!!!   their new album WESTERNER out on FIRE TALK RECORDS is one kaleidoscopic headlong jump into the depths of yer mind, one that forever will have you going back for more.......

TJUTJUNA (supposedly pronounced "choo choo na" and alluding to the russian version of the

sasquatch) is a mysterious psychedelic outfit hailing from denver, colorado.......  not much info is to be found on the band, though that doesn't matter when you drop the needle on WESTERNER....... you needn't have context for an album when it's so engrossing on its own.......

the bubbling synths and the repetitive guitar riffs matched with a motorik beat and a mesmerizing bassline blast you off into another dimension....... TJUTJUNA effortlessly combines the way out there psych of AMON DUUL and SOFT MACHINE with the atmospheric experimentation of CLUSTER and ASH RA TEMPLE to make a hazy lysergic sonic trip that'll make yer average run-of-the-mill psych lps seem boring......(and it seems "psych" is the new "it" genre of the moment....but tjutuna certainly stands out from the crowd...)

fans of HERBCRAFT, CAVE, VERMA, CAMERA, MOONRISES, WATHOUT!, FOLLAKZOID and CATACOMBZ will more than dig TJUTJUNA.........

so i thought BIRDS OF MAYA were no longer, but i was assured that wasn't the case, even that long after the apocalypse, they would still be here rockin' louder and more fierce than ever.......  well i didn't quite believe it since PURLING HISS and SPACIN' seemed to take up all their time these days and both the side project bands had released such killer new albums, would there be time for the band that started it all?

of course!!!  LITTLE BIG CHIEF RECORDS released CELEBRATION, a live lp, from BIRDS OF MAYA and fuckin a do these guys tear it up!!!!!!!

fans of high octane, wall of feedback, guitar bruising psych rock will most certainly need to track down this latest from BIRDS OF MAYA......  CELEBRATION channels the deepest and dirtiest of guitar rock greats, from BLUE CHEER to THE STOOGES and from FLOWER TRAVELIN BAND to HAWKWIND...... so throw out yer ZEP records and sell yer ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE lps......nobody trainwrecks garage, hard rock, japanese psych and space rock into one cosmic fireball of noise like BIRDS OF MAYA does........

maybe for the uninitiated, READY TO HOWL or VOL. 1 are better starting places, but CELEBRATION is two sides of unadultered rock n roll madness, the kind that just never gets old....

highly recommended and woefully limited to 350 copies,
you better scour the web now for a copy before it's gone for good.....

verma - coltan

even though their debut lp EXU only came out six months ago and is still clinging to my turntable, VERMA couldn't wait to put out another killer dose of spaced out psych rock..........this time entitled COLTAN....... out earlier in the year as a tape on NOTES AND BOLTS, TROUBLE IN MIND RECORDS couldn't let such an epic piece of mind altering atmospheric psych rock stay super limited, so they rereleased COLTAN on wax where it belongs......!!!!!!!!!!

picking off where EXU left off COLTAN combines the best elements of krautrock experimentation with droning noise rock, eerie psych and soaring post rock into one wholly engrossing repeat spin..... not to mention nods to some of the best in avant soundtrack work from GOBLIN to JOHN CARPENTER, after all COLTAN was composed with a VICE mini web documentary on the congo in mind........

though a little less straight forward than their live sets or previous work, COLTAN shows just how in the pocket VERMA is......  this new lp finds them honing their improvisational skills and their more out there tendencies......so much so i can't wait to hear what they're gonna do next!!!!  COLTAN builds and builds and slowly sucks you so far deep in the grooves, but the time you hit the final track, you're in for nothing short of a sonic epiphany!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COLTAN is super recommended for those into HAWKWIND, AMON DUUL, CLUSTER, CAN, AGITATION FREE, FAUST and/or NEU!  (yes experimental music junkies take note!)...........as well as any of their contemporaries such as CAVE, ENERGY GOWN, WOODEN SHJIPS, MIND!, TORTOISE, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE and/or TJUTJUNA..........

this one's gonna rank super high in my year end list,
and it way recommended!

oblivians - desperation

the wait was worth it........THE OBLIVIANS ARE FUCKING BACK !!!!!!!!!!   YES!!!!!!!!

not everyone is going to fall in love with the OBLIVIANS' new album DESPERATION, but those who don't are people who probably don't know what they're talking about anyway....and you should not take their musical advice.......ever!!!!!

eric, greg and jack have been busy pursuing their own bands since the OBLIVIANS called it a day back in '97, and none of those countless bands really strayed to far from what the oblivians were about in the first place, LOUD RAW ROCK N ROLL....CATCHY, DIRTY AND RAMBUNCTIOUS.AS FUCK.... be it REIGNING SOUND, COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS, THE LEGS, JACK-O AND THE TENNESSEE TEARJERKERS, TRUE SONS OF THUNDER and their solo projects recorded under their own names (or any of their other bands to plentiful to list here), ALL THREE OF THE OBLIVIANS never stopped creating a whirlwind of SOULFUL, INFECTIOUS SOUTHERN FRIED GARAGE ROCK CLASSICS that i've always jumped at the chance to grab..........  so it only made sense to get the band back together.....and in the studio......... 

gone are some of the rough edges and some of the youthful provocation / swearing on DESPERATION, but instead we get better songwriting, killer cover songs and a concise album overflowing with future smash hits.......... maybe DESPERATION isn't SOUL FOOD, but who else can jam together in the studio on a whim and write an album THIS FUCKING AWESOME?  yeah, that's just it, no one else can.  or there might be a few people that could, but none of them are around anymore.......   so stop yer whining, THIS LP IS BETTER THAN I COULD'VE EVEN EXPECTED!!!!!!!!!!   this isn't some tired reunion, or boring retread of past accomplishments, or an empty cash grab..... DESPERATION is three of my favorite musicians doing what they do best!!!!!!   and if you think this album falls flat, you might as well just throw out yer stereo cuz it's not doing you any good.......

i hope this is more than a one off from them,
but even if it is, their new lp just furthers their already legendary status.
