BIRDS OF MAYA were a favorite around TINY GROOVES, playing some of the best psyched out noisy 70s rock jams to be had....... the group has perhaps called it a day (for good? who knows i hope not) and splintered into two awesome new bands......PURLING HISS, which i've been raving about for quite a while now and SPACIN'...... both bands warp classic rock, garage and pysch by dragging them through woozy analog tape hiss and muddy production, leaving you to swoon over the spaced out melodies that emerge from there...... but whereas purling hiss delves full on into psychedelic noise and sonic experimentation, SPACIN' powers directly into bad acid trip proto punk / stoner rock territory, free jamming their way back into the sickest of MC5, BLUE CHEER and HAWKWIND grooves......
SPACIN' just released their debut lp DEEP THUDS on RICHIE RECORDS and it's a definite recommendation for those who like their psych rock weird, heavy and dark...... and i almost wanna move to philly just so i can see them and purling hiss on a regular basis........seriously SPACIN' sucks you into their crazy world and makes you feel high, and i had to keep this record playing over and over again cause everything else i was supposed to write about this weekend seemed boring in comparison.....

Birds of Maya has definitely NOT called it a day. They'll continue to come out of the woodwork like zonked cockroaches until well after the bomb falls.
that's good news.....cause i wanna see a purling hiss, spacin, birds of maya tour come through chicago....that would be the perfect night of face melting.....
