every couple of years BILLY CHILDISH forms a new band and tilts his musical leanings in a slightly different direction......
this keeps away the stagnation or repetition of playing the same sort of rock n roll year after year....... he could call it quits at this point and it would still be years before i get around to listening to all the lps he's had a hand in, him and robert pollard being in the same over productive category of musicians......
so without to much fanfare, BILLY CHILDISH's new project is the SPARTAN DREGGS....... primitive trashy garage rock / fuzz punk / british beat music that makes you wanna shake yr hips and get drunk.........
maybe one of his best releases in years........ not quite the MILKSHAKES or the MIGHTY CAESARS, but catchier than most...........
listen below....download link removed by request...GO BUY IT AT YR LOCAL RECORD SHOP!
you may know from reading this blog that the oblivians are one of my favorite bands and the various projects they've been involved with since demise of the great garage punk band have also been a huge influence on my musical leanings....... greg has been keeping busy with REIGNING SOUND, eric with GONER RECORDS and JACK OBLIVIAN with his awesome solo records........
and JACK OBLIVIAN has a new rock n roller of an lp "RAT CITY" just out on BIG LEGAL MESS.....
the garage punk swagger is still there, but on his new album, jack oblivian mixes MEMPHIS rock and soul with post punk, classic rock boogie, fuzzed out psych and drunken blues together in one big fun late night mess.........
this is good rock n roll, at a time when way too many people stay confined within their small subgenres..... if you like anything i post on TINY GROOVES, you need to check out JACK OBLIVIAN, he's way too under-appreciated for such an awesome musician....
it's sad when one of yr favorite bands calls it quits. but you gotta thank 'em for all the fun drunken times......
DOUBLE DAGGER is going on one final tour after nearly ten years, three albums and one ep.......
their noisy post hardcore art rock was some of the best underground rock you could get yr hands on... so much so that thrill jockey signed them for their last two releases......
if you haven't seen the chaos of DOUBLE DAGGER live, you're missing out.....
they're tied with japanther and lightning bolt in the wild loft party show category.... and no one writes hardcore songs about design, typography, dance parties and hipsters like this...... i really can't say enough about these guys.... sure they're friends, but anyone who's ever listened to DOUBLE DAGGER immediately calls themselves a fan........
make sure to check them out on their farewell tour....

thanks goes to WFMU's TEENAGE WASTELAND for turning me on to this awesome new album by one of canada's finest garage bands.
i thought LES BREASTFEEDERS just disappeared into thin air, but they're back with another catchy fun garage rock record.... the last album they did was way back in 2006 and not many people noticed them.....
you might not know about these MONTREAL natives, but this is some SERIOUS french canadian rock n roll......
you need to listen up........ this is so good, you might think this lp was recorded in DETROIT in the heyday of the 90s garage revival but for the french lyrics....... brings to mind THE SIGHTS, APRIL MARCH with THE MAKERS, THE DETROIT COBRAS, BANTAM ROOSTER and many bands that used to be on SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY.....
rising outta the ashes of the GIBSON BROS, the trash rockabilly garage outfit from COLOMBUS OHIO, was one of my fav garage punk bands, 68 COMEBACK.....
most people seem to have forgotten about 68 COMEBACK, and with all these younger bands tapping into the old CRYPT, SYMPATHY and IN THE RED bands as influences, everyone should not overlook JEFFREY EVANS' great lo-fi bluesy garage punk band.......
this is great fucking music, LOUD, RAUCOUS, SOULFUL DRUNKEN ROCK N ROLL.... you need 68 COMEBACK in yr collection......
i put them in the same list of all time great garage punk bands with the gories, oblivians, and cheater slicks.......
for anyone who's been way stoked about the MIKAL CRONIN lp or the second new long player from THE OH SEES, i think you need to save up yr money to buy the debut album, NIGHTMARE SODA by TORONTO's POW WOWS.....
the CYNICS like these kids enough to tour with them and put out their new lp on the CYNICS' label GET HIP......
RECOMMENDED if you like any lo-fi, jangly, psychedelic, trashy or good garage rock... i mean if you like any garage rock at all....
if you don't at least kinda like the POW WOWS, maybe just need to give up on garage and listen to some quiet sad indie rock.....
i know i'll play this lp quite a bit in the new future.......
Friday, October 28th - London, ON @ Call The Office Saturday, October 29th - Toronto, ON @ Mitzi's Sister Monday, October 31st (HALLOWEEN!!!) - Brooklyn, NY @ Lone Wolf Wednesday, November 2nd - Cincinnatti, OH @ Northside Tavern
Thursday, November 3rd - Chicago @ Bottom Lounge. Friday, November 4th - Detroit, MI Saturday, November 5th - Pittsburgh, PA
i wouldn't usually included any press quotes about a band, but the POW WOWs have elicited some great reviews and comments......
"Pow Wows gloriously carry the flower punk torch and continue in our debaucherous death cult tradition. In the spirit of Simply Saucer and The Monks this recording bleeds and should be a hit during any afternoon Robitussin session.... My only advice is to keep hydrated... lots of water & GRAPEFRUIT... it will save you in the end...." -King Khan, Emancipator of R&B (Leader of the Pack)
"If The Urinals hit head on in a car crash with Wire." -Gregg Kostelich of the CYNICS / GET HIP RECORDS
"The POW WOWS are some awesome garage-punk for the kids and we recommend them fully." -Le Noise
"My ears got wood when I heard the Pow Wows." -Bill Kelly, WFMU-FM and Little Steven's Underground Garage channel on Sirius/XM

SO SEE YOU THERE................ALL THESE BANDS ARE FUCKING AWESOME and so is PERMANENT, so let's all drink and rock n roll............
i never thought i would see olivia tremor control or the music tapes play OR MUCH LESS TOGETHER ON THE SAME BILL...
OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL was always one of my favorite ELEPHANT 6 bands, fighting for time on the turntable with NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL.......i pretty much listened to nothing besides those two bands for a summer.......
but i love each and every one of those weird psych pop / indie bands that included themselves in the elephant six: OF MONTREAL, APPLES IN STEREO, the GERBILS, ELF POWER, CIRCULATORY SYSTEM, MUSIC TAPES, SUNSHINE FIX....just to name a few of the bands from that fun ATHENS GEORGIA scene........
so tuesday night at the bottom lounge was like a dream come true. if you have the chance to see either of these bands, you should. its so worth the ticket price. one of the best shows i've seen this year.....and thats quite the stiff competition.......
let's not forget that there's plenty of awesome french garage rock out there......SONIC CHICKEN 4, LIMINANAS, CHEVEU and FEELING OF LOVE.......
despite a somewhat hippie namesake, FEELING OF LOVE is one of my fav new bands.....combining noisy psych with stomping garage punk....... one of the most unique sounding bands i've mentioned on tiny grooves yet............
here's what TERMINAL BOREDOM has to say about my new fav french band (this is a much better description than i might write)......
Feeling of Love may very well be one of the most under-rated acts out there these days, but it seems they're starting to get their due... FOL bring back best of Nineties-garage-blues (Oblivians, JSBX, and Doo Rag at their finest) without the stench of revisionism, updatingthose styles with a Pussy Galore-like slop of noise and a healthy dose of acerbic wit. Guitars alternately slide and slash, keyboards get punched and stepped on amid the fray, Frenchmen sneer and whoop at you, drums boom and then turn coffee can hollow...they run blues-trash through the gauntlet and come out the other side reborn as some snarling beast. One of these tunes sounds like the Bassholes if they were on AmRep. Others sound like Spencer, if he were REALLY a bad ass and not just pretending. The best song titles ever and gratuitous use of the word pussy just ratchet the entertainment value up a few clicks. Beautiful, like a cranked-up Bob Log fronting Unsane!
There's so much I love about this band right now. Invigorating music. Cheveu may be everyone's current French darlings, but Feeling of Love hold the keys to my heart. Buy all of their records now if you haven't already.
listen to the title track off their new lp DISSOLVE ME below....
ACID BABY JESUS is a another great garage rock find from SLOVENLY RECORDS...... how they find these awesome european bands to release on their label I will never know.......
here's what Bazooka Joe has to say about ACID BABY JESUS: Just months after releasing their massive "Hospitals" e.p., Slovenly Recordings presents the debut full length tidal wave from Greece's Acid Baby Jesus, simply titled, "LP" (702-110). A Mediterranean concoction of two of our favorite "Black" bands (Sabbath/ Lips), ABJ represents the future of heavy psych'n'roll from an isolated, ancient civilization. Combining the ruthless elements of American outlaw roots music and celestial glam rock, like fellow deconstructionists Demon's Claws, "LP" suggests the Rolling Stones at their wearied best, with the electrifying hi-jinks of Brian Eno bulldozing the swagger into the darkest corners of the cosmos.
Among this album's thirteen original compositions, the deathly dirge "Homo Sapiens" claws forth with a twisted, underlying skronk, ending with the terrifying bacchanalia of a pack of disgruntled flying monkeys. Elsewhere, trance inducing lullabies crescendo into fully erupting cacophonies of feedback and distortion. Girl-group icons The Shangri-Las are channeled in the beaty, dark-pop gallop of "I'm A Baby." "Tooth To Toe," with its exotic, percussive clank and uplifting glitter hook juxtaposes brilliantly with its lyrical ode to post-tour poverty ("I've got to pay the rent, my money's always spent, and I'm deep in shit.")
Dynamics play equally as heavy a role as their expert songwriting, and a flawless production job by John Vulgaris rounds this album out with a fresh level of psycho-sonic Alex Chilton-esque throb, heavily peppered with lazy Hazelwood-isms. "LP" presents a long, gooey segue from rave-up to release with breathtaking results, like the best love-making of your life.

maybe i'm fixated on the australia garage/punk scene right now, but everyday i hear about some new awesome band from there.....and HOLY SHIT all these bands are touring their way through chicago to GONER FEST...... KITCHENS FLOOR, STRAIGHT ARROWS, DEAF WISH and ROYAL HEADACHE.....
ROYAL HEADACHE just released their debut full length on RIP SOCIETY records and it just might be one of the most catchy soulful garage punk lps i've heard since the Dirtbombs released Ultraglide in Black......
parts 60s soul, 80s college rock/post punk and lots of garage jangle and punk chaos......ROYAL HEADACHE sounds like MISSION OF BURMA, the REPLACEMENTS, JAY REATARD, the THERMALS and the BUZZCOCKS all rolled in to one fun band........... highly recommended!

STRAIGHT ARROWS are jangly lo-fi garage rock from AUSTRALIA...... ........where quite the rock n roll scene has sprouted up.......along with them, there's UV RACE, ROYAL HEADACHE, EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING, CIRCLE PIT, KITCHEN'S FLOOR and SUPER WILD HORSES.....just to name a couple...... all of these bands playing wild garage inspired art punk......
but the STRAIGHT ARROWS have their own unique take......part 60s psych, a bit of husker du inspired college rock frenzy and a whole lot of boozy fuzzed out punk attitude........ this is a band you need to check out.........
THE MANTLES are another great garage/psych band from SAN FRAN........
their sound falls somewhere between the FRESH & ONLYS, the ROYAL BATHS, WRONG WORDS and THE OH SEES.........
they put out an excellent s/t lp in 2009 on SILTBREEZE and then released a follow up ep PINK INFORMATION on MEXICAN SUMMER in 2010.......... and just recently unleashed a new single RASPBERRY THIGHS on SDZ records (from france).....
ALLMUSIC wrote this about THE MANTLE'S first lp.....
The Mantles may hail from San Francisco and their self-titled album may have been released on Siltbreeze in 2009, but after listening to it, one would be excused for thinking the group hailed from Los Angeles and the album was released on Down There in 1986. Or that they were from Auckland and the record was released on Flying Nun in 1990. (Or even that they were from the Midwest, maybe Dayton, OH, and opened forPlasticland or Death of Samantha when they came through town.) They share the swirling guitar and organ textures of the Paisley Underground crowd, the chiming, chugging feel of classic New Zealand groups likethe Chills, and the jangling, melodic songcraft of bands likeLoveandthe Byrds(who inspiredthe Nunsand Undergrounders). The Mantles isn’t some studied nostalgia trip, though, despite how strong their influences come through. They escape it through strong songwriting, spirited performances, and the garagey energy that comes hopping off the grooves as the record spins. Songs like the pretty folk-rocker "Don’t Lie," the surging rockers "What We Do Matters" and "Yesterday’s Gone," or the a surprisingly soulful organ-led ballad "Look Away" make a strong case that the Mantlesare almost on par with their inspirations. The rest of the album isn’t far behind, with the hits beating the duds 10-0. It’s an impressive debut album from a band that loves the past but doesn’t live in it.
CHICAGO noise rockers ET HABIT mash murky psych rock into free jazz and punk.......
featuring Christmas from MICKEY......ET HABIT is part of the local NOISE scene of CACAW, MAYOR DALEY, RUNNING and BAD DRUGS..... and close noise making cousins to SKOAL KODIAK, PUFFY AREOLAS and CLIPD BEAKS.......
i wish i could drag all of you to some of these awesome house shows in chicago, so you could see ET HABIT in action......you'd love it.
with one tape release via SKROT UP and a forthcoming 7 inch on HOZAC RECORDS, i hope to hear more from these guys in the future........
ET HABIT is playing TONIGHT at BALL HALL with PUFFY AREOLAS and RUNNING and next weekend, September 10 with KITCHEN'S FLOOR at the CROWN TAP.......
APACHE DROPOUT is good fuzzed out psych/garage rock from Indiana....
they play the kind of garage rock that has some soul like the DIRTBOMBS.......
with a heavy dose of drugged out psych like THE OH SEES......
put them in the same camp as some of the other bands i've been writing about lately, the NIGHT BEATS, WRONG WORDS, ROYAL BATHS, COSMONAUTS and BLASTED CANYONS.....wild fun garage/psych.........
they mesh influences like BLUE CHEER, VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE SEEDS, SHADOWS OF THE KNIGHT, THE PRETTY THINGS, 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS and BLUES MAGOOS without sounding like a cheap garage rock knock off......... THIS IS THE REAL THING. don't believe the critics who think all these new bands are just rehashing old cliches.......
YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT APACHE DROPOUT......... there's a new 7 inch out on TROUBLE IN MIND and a s/t lp on FAMILY VINEYARD......
