HOSEHEAD RECORDSis releasing some of the best punk/ garage/ power pop tapes and records north of the border..... ontario is quite lucky to have these guys in their rock n roll scene....
and i'd even say they're giving BURGER RECORDS a run for the money....
HOSEHEAD has done releases from tiny grooves' faves WHITE WIRES, STEVE ADAMYK, YOUNG GOVERNOR, MIDWEST BEAT and SONIC AVENUES, not to mention bands i've discovered via my new friends at HOSEHEAD like STRANGE ATTRACTOR, SAM COFFEY & THE IRON LUNGS, RED DONS and MOTHER'S CHILDREN......
CHEAP TIME is back with their third full length effort WALLPAPER MUSIC.....and it's out right now.....via IN THE RED records......
it's the most driving and concise lp from the band so far..... glam inspired garage punk fun...... plenty of fuzz, melody and psych burnt edges....... i wasn't such a big fan of their last lp FANTASTIC EXPLANATIONS, but CHEAP TIME has alway been one of my favorite live bands....so i knew that WALLPAPER would be an album worth checking out....
and i certainly can't stop listening to it.... pop damaged glam sparkled psych bent songs that are layered with all sorts of analog goodness.... many a garage band these days just rushes through the recording process and gives us what sort of sounds like just a live take....but CHEAP TIME definitely spent some time crafting WALLPAPER MUSIC, it might just be the most epic garage rock album of the year......
and aside from just being catchy and fun, jeffrey novak of cheap time is probably one of the best garage rock songwriters out there.... in the ranks of jay reatard and john dwyer of the oh sees........
fans of DIRTBOMBS, OBLIVIANS, TY SEGALL, NOBUNNY and NATURAL CHILD need to go out and grab this new CHEAP TIME lp now..........as classic as the new york dolls and johnny thunders...... highly recommended!
Listen to the first track off the new lp, MORE CIGARETTES below..... (and/or download the track)
and click here to download a second track off WALLPAPER MUSIC... ANOTHER TIME.... and watch the video for the song below.......
MAGIC MILKare one of the finest purveyors of sweaty fuzz damaged, punk bent garage in the chicago's riotous rock n roll scene....
many outside of the city may not yet know MAGIC MILK, but with their newest release, the MELLOWS ep, out on SLOW FIZZ, surely that has to change..... fans of the MIND SPIDERS, THE OH SEES, WAVVES and TY SEGALL need to check them out now.....
here's what SLOW FIZZ had to say about their newest release.....
It’s so good we pressed it on both sides......
Originally from The Big Onion, Kenny Alden left the Heartland to attend college inthe high desert of Arizona. But the scorching sun didn’t quite fry his brain; rather it seems to have baked his songwriting down a sinewy, lo-fi racket that is hard to deny.MELLOWS is completely of the moment, but like any record worth listening to– it is original while not being shy about some of its influences. Picking up on thedroney ripper vibes of fellow citizens like Disappears, Radar Eyes and Alex White, Magic Milk also sneak in a Waylon-like swagger – albeit one drenched in a pile ofreverb that sounds like it was picked up at the Creation Records fire sale.
But a sports car isn’t worth the rubber it’s sitting on if the engine doesn’t purr. On MELLOWS, all instruments are courtesy of Mr. Alden. But with a newly solidifiedline-up, the live version of this band is another animal altogether. Bassist Nick Spiese does a yeoman’s work holding this infectious cacophony down tight. While drummer Maggie Laleman keeps it moving straight ahead in a whirlwind of flailing limbs and abused tambourine.
LISTEN TO THE MELLOW EP BELOW..... and go buy it now from yer local record store...
TINY GROOVES had the chance to sit down with Kenny, Maggie and Nick a couple of weeks ago to talk about their new lp, tours and favorite Disney movies..... and let me tell you, Magic Milk is entertaining both on stage and off......you should get drunk with them sometime soon....read on below....
nick- Kenny started the band a couple of years ago...but we weren't all in the band til recently... kenny- But this has been the lineup since last New Year's Eve, when Maggie joined the band. nick- I met Kenny two years ago when he moved here.... and I joined somewhere along the way... kenny- He was one of the first people I met here... nick- Magic Milk has always been Kenny's band.... (which he started after moving to Chicago)...
Tiny Grooves- Did you guys play in any other bands before Magic Milk?
kenny- Nick won the battle of the bands in high school at the Congress Theater. and won a thousand dollars..... maggie- I used to play with this other guy as his keyboard player, but then I quit and learned drums for Magic Milk. kenny- I used to play in a band in Tuscon called the Fucking Kennys, with the drummer from Wavves.....
Tiny Grooves- Is there a story behind the band name, Magic Milk?
maggie- Kenny, I asked you the same question before..... nick- ....but we could talk about our alternate band names like.... kenny- Deep Stuff....the name of our secret band....it's on the bass drums even....
but Magic Milk came from me wanting to copy a guy who used to play drums in the Fucking Kennys who had another band called Magic Practice, which sounded real cool. and this was before there were a hundred bands with Magic in their fucking name..... and i wanted to be the first to steal the word Magic.... and then when i drove up to chicago, i listened to "safe as milk" by captain beefheart a whole bunch... so hence the milk part of the name..... and later on there became all these other weird connotations - most of them gross - but we don't have to talk about them.....
Tiny Grooves- what are some of yr influences? bands you like to listen to?
kenny- we're all a little different... you end up listening to so much shit these days....ipod generation and all..... we listened to johnny thunders today....so we could do a cover song.... maggie- nothing i listen to has anything to do with what i play in the band... nick- if i was in charge, it would be a much sadder band.... kenny- so i guess it doesn't matter what we listen to.....
Tiny Grooves- Do you consider yourself a garage rock band?
kenny- we're lumped in with all that garage rock crap...we don't mind it....but we play rock n roll music.... and yeah it's through a tube amp... and we play blues progressions.... it's not really about the labels.... like i said we just play rock n roll....
(at this point, we started hating on the White Stripes, Sleigh Bells and we all agreed everyone sounds bad on SNL....except maybe Bob Dylan....maybe we were a little drunk....just maybe, too much of this interview ended up being "off the record"....i wish you could've been there.....)
Tiny Grooves- Tell me about the new ep?
kenny- the new album is called the Mellows. our shows are real high energy and out record is called the Mellows cause its for chilling out... and hanging out with yr buddies... i like listening to it slowed down..... tiny- so its slower than yr shows? kenny- yeah but i like to actually put my finger on the turntable and slow the record down even further... its coming with a sticker that says "it sounds good slowed down, in the car or even under water..." but you can't really listen to it in the car or under water but you get the point....
Tiny Grooves- what other bands do you like to play with and/or how do you like the chicago scene?
kenny- i like the chicago scene a lot... nick- people are always real receptive kenny- here are the bands that are fucking rad - slushy, white mystery, we gotta plug our friends.....this is the thing about chicago, other places you go see your friends bands and you have to say "oh that was really good" and not mean it, here you go see your friends' bands, even though its a big city, and their bands are rad... nick- toupee is awesome.... kenny- who else is really good? maggie - bare mutants, heavy times kenny- football nick- runnies kenny- running is sick too and the yolks for sure....
Tiny Grooves- Where do you guys like to play most around town?
kenny- parties....so many great venues in town, but we always like to play parties the most... maggie- people are more free spirited there.... kenny- and the kids are younger. drunker and more fun... nick- they don't care about the music as much, but.... kenny- the show with the Mind Spiders at the Burlington was awesome, but it was a different reaction then we're used to....its different with the thirty and over crowd at a bar... and that's great it's just different.... maggie- instead of knowing they like you cause they're drunk and dancing the whole show, the thirty and over crowd comes up afterwards and talks to you and tells you how much they liked you. and buys merch. kenny- yeah they're dancing in their mind....instead of actually dancing. and maybe they remember the show afterwards instead of just getting into some college mistakes afterward like at a house show.. nick- yeah like at a party, who the fuck just played? kenny- who the fuck was that band last night? who cares let's smoke some more dope.....
Tiny Grooves- What's the craziest show / band story you have?
nick- when we played double door, kenny took off his pants, got off stage and walked on top of the bar, with the bouncers trying to grab him, while he's kicking them away... maggie- yeah or the VFW show was insane nick - yeah they got mad cause kenny got naked, which happens a lot....but at Super Happy Funland, some guy rebirthed himself...that was crazy kenny- he was pouring fake blood all over the place..... maggie- and at that same show there was a transvestite on roller skates..... kenny- all sorts of crazy shit. we broke the floor at a gallery we played once. but every show something crazy happens..... we've signed autographs after shows before, there's nudity, people banging on the air vents and lots of drinking....
Tiny Grooves - How was SXSW?
kenny- saws lots of bands, drank a lot of beer, yeah we had a great time....we didn't even lose money on the tour down there and back.... nick- the shows down there and back were more fun than actually being at SXSW. kenny- the tour was where it was at. at sxsw, we didn't have a record out yet and we only had one show booked ahead of time, so we played where ever we could.... maggie - i had a great time thanks to Tom's Tabouleh and the Spider House...i mean we hung out at the spider house for two and a half days. kenny- we hung out there and saw tons of bands, got wristbands for free PBRs the whole time we were there...made friends with the bands and the people who worked there.... we went to the GET BENT show and that was awesome..... and i got to see the Cosmonauts, that was definitely a highlight....
Tiny Grooves - tour soon?
kenny- maybe at the end of the summer but at least again in the fall...you know go to all the places that are too hot to visit during the summer.... maggie- maybe we can get an unpaid intern for tour? kenny- white mystery has one... maggie- maybe we should look into it...
Tiny Grooves - final question, what are your favorite Disney movies and yr astrological sign?
kenny- dumbo, libra
maggie- little mermaid, aquarius
nick- fantasia, sagittarius
2012 is the year that TY SEGALL is gonna take over the airwaves, or at least the interwebs..... he's planning to drop at least three awesome new garage / pysch bombs in the form of full lengths this year..... the first lp, HAIR, with WHITE FENCE is already quite the classic around here....and i highly suggest you buy it now from DRAG CITY.....
next up is THE TY SEGALL BAND lp entitled SLAUGHTERHOUSE out JUNE 26TH onIN THE RED...... comprised of TY's touring band (Charlie Moonheart, Mikal Cronin and Emily Rose Epstein), this new album will totally destroy you...... as intense as the best live TY SEGALL show you've ever seen.... they really turn it up all the way and fucking jam..... i think iggy pop, black sabbath and the mc5 would be proud...
i can't wait to get my hands on this lp..... perhaps even more recommended than HAIR, but for sure an album you'll see on my end of the year best of list.......
LISTEN TO WAVE GOODBYE AND I BOUGHT MY EYES OFF THE NEW LP SLAUGHTERHOUSE BELOW....
and look for TY SEGALL's third full length release of the year on DRAG CITY later on in the fall......
as well as reissues of THE TRADITIONAL FOOLS "s/t" and TY SEGALL/MIKAL CRONIN "reverse shark attack" lps on IN THE RED soooooooonnnnnnnn.......... save yr moneys.......
jered gummere has already rocked chicago hard with his previous bands GUILTY PLEASURES and THE PONYS.....and now it's time for you to check out his brand new garage / noise pop project.....BARE MUTANTS.......
BARE MUTANTS are quite the mix of shoegaze psych and lo-fi garage mellowness.... and you'll get sucked in right away....
yep i'll admit to wallowing in the wall of woozy feedback and droned out melody all day long....i just can't get enough.... BARE MUTANTS are certainly recommended for those who love RADAR EYES, THE PONYS, SPACEMEN 3, THE VELVET UNDERGROUD and COSMONAUTS........
they've been playing shows around chicago for some time now, but the rest of the world needs to tune in to the BARE MUTANTS... thankfully HOZAC RECORDS has come to the rescue and released their debut 7 inch "without you"......and it's a must have.....
IN THE RED records is celebrating RECORD STORE DAY by releasing a live MARK SULTAN lp, entitled THE WAR ON ROCK N ROLL...... this is essential i promise, as Mark Sultan is one of the best live garage/punk acts around.....
and if you know of his other bands (the spaceshits, les sexareenos, king khan and bbq show, mind controls), you understand why this is so exciting.......
THE WAR ON ROCK N ROLL is available as a free download just in case you can't get yr hands on one of the limited lps on RSD...... and here's what Mark Sultan has to say about the War on RnR lp.....
"In The Red Records has decided to release this recording on vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day, and I am thrilled. While you listen to this recording, keep in mind that it is one take, live, and that the sides of the LP split the recording, obviously due to vinyl's time limitations upon pressing. At the time of this recording, yes, I was hellbent on converting my live sound to what you hear on this LP. It had been my first and only attempt at this sound, and while I am myself curious how I pulled it off in that one take, and while I really enjoy how it sounds, I never tried doing it again. Maybe I will for some of these upcoming shows."
THE POWS were the unknown psych / garage warriors of the Columbia, Missouri scene.....
featuring members of CAVE and HEATER, these guys just rocked out not giving a fuck if anyone payed attention, but Permanent Records sure did. and they wanted to share this lost gem of rock goodness with the rest of us for RECORD STORE DAY......
think lo-fi garage bent punk mixed with some minimal post punk angst and a bit of psych weirdness.... but listen for yerself...the POWS are not easily definable music, yet who cares when its so fun.... fans of seedy underground rock like the TESTORS, DEAD MOON, SCREAMERS, CHEATER SLICKS and/or PERE UBU will love the POWS.....
just read what Lance and Liz from PERMANENT had to say about the POWS......Columbia, Missouri was our mecca for music in the early 2000's. The scene in this small oasis of a college town was loaded with talent, creativity and youthful energy. Some really talented musicians came out of that era of Columbia. The bands they performed in and went on to perform in include bands you may have heard of like Cave, Mahjongg, Heater, Bitchin' Bajas, Jerusalem and the Starbaskets, Bobby Conn, and California Raisins. The Pows were one of the best bands in Columbia during the 1998-2004 years. The band began as a snotty garage punk duo before they were old enough to drive. Over the course of a couple of years, they added a couple members, aged slightly, and got way more experimental. Columbia's Andy Warhol figure, Channing Kennedy, and his CDr label Cat Jams fostered the the local music scene. The Pows put both of their records and a 'Hits' comp out on Cat Jams, alongside bands like The I Love You But I'm Not In Love With Yous, Swamp Fuck, the post-Pows project Sabertooth, and a bunch of other stuff no one outside of Columbia, save for a few hyper-cool Japanese peeps, have ever heard of. We digress. This scene is what we grew up with. It inspired us to start our first band, open our own record store, and start our own label. How's that for DIY? The Pows were one of our favorite bands in Columbia while they existed. Their brand of snotty White Stripes-like minimalism meets Chrome-esque weirdness (supposedly they hadn't heard Chrome before recording this stuff) was like anything we'd heard up to that point and, honestly, still some of our all-time favorite shit. Seriously. Liz and I learned all the songs on their first album and performed as The Pows after they'd broken up at a show that Channing booked at Maude Vintage (another important piece of the Columbia puzzle) as a The Pows final performance. So few people saw the Pows when they were active that hardly anyone even noticed that we weren't them. We were honored to be mistaken for The Pows. We were also honored to release another Columbia band's last LP, Warhammer 48k's epic "An Ethereal Oracle", as the first record on Permanent a few years later after just having opened our Chicago location. Warhammer broke up and a couple of the guys went on to play in Cave. Cave's drummer, Rex McMurry, was an original member of The Pows. As was Cave art guru and Heater member, Zach McLuckie. We hounded these guys for years about doing a Pows record on Permanent and it's finally come to fruition. We couldn't be more proud to be releasing this Pows career-spanning restrospective LP as the 30th Permanent release.....
and check out three songs from the POWS below.....and go to PERMANENT RECORDS in chicago or LA on RECORD STORE DAY to pick up a copy. limited to 100 copies.......so don't sleep on it.....

TY SEGALL had this to say about WHITE FENCE......“Fuck Nostalgia. Live the truth. Truth is feeling, Truth is sound, Truth is motion. I am believing. I am seeing. I am moving. TRUTH IS FOREVER. Meet The Presley/ White Fence Truth Serum. Imagine if you will, that your uncle frank, aunt jane and cousing ricky all made out with George Harrison at the same time and felt good about it. Thats what the family perfume smells like. Like the real shit. This aint your regular mutton chop rock. This is freak your fucking mom out cause she caught you naked in the back yard blasting this shit rock. This is not a joke. This is the hit factory. This is the eye. This is another planet. And hurry up, cause this perfume aint available at no macy’s. Fuck the Rolling stones. Long live Keith. Were allready dead. SMELL THE TRUTH. FUCK THE TRUTH. FUCK ROCK AND ROLL. LOVE ROCK AND ROLL. PUSSY GALORE released their fucked up train wreck version of the Rolling Stone's "EXILE ON MAIN STREET" in 1986 on cassette. they never got permission to re-record and destroy these classic songs, but they decided to go ahead with the album anyway..... probably one of the hardest-to-find releases ever, EXILE is also one of the most classic garage punk lps ever..... trash rock at its finest.....
and well everything Pussy Galore recorded is highly recommended for fans of abrasive noisy garage bent punk rock..... the band, after all, was comprised of John Spencer (of Blues Explosion fame), Julia Cafritz (Velvet Monkeys), Neil Haggerty (Royal Trux, Howling Hex) and Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Chrome Cranks).....
rock n roll might just be alive cause of PUSSY GALORE.......

GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH are one of the newest additions to the DIRTNAP records roster.... and man, nobody brings the demented psychedelic weird pop vibe to surf music like they do..... sort of in the same camp as THEE CORMANS with their hybrid of blown out surf/garage music, GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH ups the ante by smashing some good ol rock n roll into the mix... as well as adding some punk attitude and volume..... this is mutant pop for the ADD kids who want to fucking party at the beach......
one of the most interesting lps i've come across this year, and that's despite the kitschy art and silly band name.... which after you listen to their new lp CHEST CRAWL, you can't hold against them......
so check out GUANTANAMO BAYWATCH's BOOMERENGA off the new lp below and buy their new lp CHEST CRAWL in may.......

and oh watch NOBUNNY get crazy live in detroit below......

MEAT MARKET is a great new up and coming band from santa cruz with a hell of an awesome name......
they play a kind of raw fuzzed out surf / garage soaked rock n roll.....MEAT MARKET remind me of the mummies and thee cormans...and they're definitely noisy lo-fi peers of the cosmonauts, guantanomo baywatch, plateaus and the night beats...
music to drunkenly surf to, or at least party by the beach to...... their blown out and jangly garage vibe keeps me coming back for more MEAT MARKET day after day.......
they only have one release and it's a s/t tape out on UNDER THE GUN records.......but somebody really needs to put their debut out on vinyl right now..... totally too good for a small pressing of cassettes...... Meat Market may really be my fave new band of 2012......
