IN THE RED just released the killer s/t debut from aussie drone punks EASTLINK and you need this blast of gnarly blown out RnR ASAP!!!!!!!!

after a couple of stellar fuzz coated / art damaged singles and a self titled tape, EASTLINK is here with their world weary, minimal chord feeback punk statement!!!!!  a sort of anti-thesis on all that is right and wrong in the current state of ROCK N ROLL.   dipping deep in the possibilities of repetition and simplicity borrowed from la monte young on thru krautrock and fusing those lessons to the ugly punk we've all come to love from the aussie scene and thus melding that unwieldy beast to the most damaged / warped outsider psych rock you can imagine, EASTLINK IS A DIRECT REFUTATION on all those cliche loving bands pretending it's still 1968, or 1982 or whatever year certain subgenres of ROCK N ROLL calcified into a mold, ready to the next band to inject their plastic selves into!

EASTLINK is about escape from the narrow demarcations of analog sound that people argue back and forth about.  their name might allude to a highway in australia just as much as it might refer to kraftwerk's mind bending vision of the autobahn.  both bands seeing beyond the possibilities given to them.  EASTLINK transcends punk or perhaps post punk by adding / subtracting psych / noise / melody and leaving nothing but a menacing mess of layered noise for yer ears to meditate / dissect with every listen.  a band with four guitars and a primal drummer and no bass playing anchor, EASTLINK is UNHINGED DISTORTO KOSMISCHE MUSIC FOR THE YOUNG AND REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!!

not recommended for the musically unadventurous.  but definitely for those into SONIC YOUTH, DESTRUCTION UNIT, MONOSHOCK, DISAPPEARS, UV RACE, SPACIN, CAN and the like.......

on his new lp, TY SEGALL picks up his acoustic guitar and channels his mellower side and inner SYD BARRETT.... (leaving aside the more garage psych stoner vibes for his other band FUZZ)..... but don't fret SLEEPER is just the kind of album you don't realize you need....following the same inclinations as his collaboration with WHITE FENCE on "HAIR" and his previous lp "GOODBYE BREAD", SLEEPER is stripped-down folkster psych, all hazy, melodic and reverbed.......sure to play like some woozy dream and sink way down into conscience...a kaleidoscopic, mind bending trip straight to the early days of psych rock.........the kind of rock n roll not played much since the heyday of MARC BOLAN, SKIP SPENCE, ARTHUR LEE, DAVID BOWIE and ROKY ERICKSON....... with perhaps the exception of more recent tripped out musical explorations of the ELEPHANT 6 COLLECTIVE (neutral milk hotel, olivia tremor control, sunshine fix, et al)........  ty segall has been absorbing the best of the early days of uk psych, west coast sunshine pop, folkier sunset strip psych and the warped am rock of joe meek cuz all these diverse influence shine through on SLEEPER and make for a killer album of addicting low key lysergic rock n roll.....

though SLEEPER is not as immediate as some of TY SEGALL's previous white hot RnR lps, this might be his most incisive and mature album yet......so let's just say its SUPER RECOMMENDED and leave it at that!!!!!!

need a conscience expanding dose of heavy psych?  well TJUTJUNA has you covered!!!!!!!!!   their new album WESTERNER out on FIRE TALK RECORDS is one kaleidoscopic headlong jump into the depths of yer mind, one that forever will have you going back for more.......

TJUTJUNA (supposedly pronounced "choo choo na" and alluding to the russian version of the

sasquatch) is a mysterious psychedelic outfit hailing from denver, colorado.......  not much info is to be found on the band, though that doesn't matter when you drop the needle on WESTERNER....... you needn't have context for an album when it's so engrossing on its own.......

the bubbling synths and the repetitive guitar riffs matched with a motorik beat and a mesmerizing bassline blast you off into another dimension....... TJUTJUNA effortlessly combines the way out there psych of AMON DUUL and SOFT MACHINE with the atmospheric experimentation of CLUSTER and ASH RA TEMPLE to make a hazy lysergic sonic trip that'll make yer average run-of-the-mill psych lps seem boring......(and it seems "psych" is the new "it" genre of the moment....but tjutuna certainly stands out from the crowd...)

fans of HERBCRAFT, CAVE, VERMA, CAMERA, MOONRISES, WATHOUT!, FOLLAKZOID and CATACOMBZ will more than dig TJUTJUNA.........

even though their debut lp EXU only came out six months ago and is still clinging to my turntable, VERMA couldn't wait to put out another killer dose of spaced out psych rock..........this time entitled COLTAN....... out earlier in the year as a tape on NOTES AND BOLTS, TROUBLE IN MIND RECORDS couldn't let such an epic piece of mind altering atmospheric psych rock stay super limited, so they rereleased COLTAN on wax where it belongs......!!!!!!!!!!

picking off where EXU left off COLTAN combines the best elements of krautrock experimentation with droning noise rock, eerie psych and soaring post rock into one wholly engrossing repeat spin..... not to mention nods to some of the best in avant soundtrack work from GOBLIN to JOHN CARPENTER, after all COLTAN was composed with a VICE mini web documentary on the congo in mind........

though a little less straight forward than their live sets or previous work, COLTAN shows just how in the pocket VERMA is......  this new lp finds them honing their improvisational skills and their more out there tendencies......so much so i can't wait to hear what they're gonna do next!!!!  COLTAN builds and builds and slowly sucks you so far deep in the grooves, but the time you hit the final track, you're in for nothing short of a sonic epiphany!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COLTAN is super recommended for those into HAWKWIND, AMON DUUL, CLUSTER, CAN, AGITATION FREE, FAUST and/or NEU!  (yes experimental music junkies take note!)...........as well as any of their contemporaries such as CAVE, ENERGY GOWN, WOODEN SHJIPS, MIND!, TORTOISE, ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE and/or TJUTJUNA..........

this one's gonna rank super high in my year end list,
and it way recommended!

krautrock / psych / experimental rock legends CAN need no introduction from me.  but if you're looking for a little history on a band that nearly everyone cites as an influence, you need to watch the documentary below.  

CAN - THE DOCUMENTARY tracks the seminal german krautrock band from the early days with malcolm mooney all the way through their reunion album, and through out are tons of classic live performances and interviews that'll blow yer mind.......

so enjoy, and pick up every CAN lp you can get your hands on.  they are classic as it gets.  

catholic spray - earth slime

maybe i just missed (or ignored) the hype surrounding CATHOLIC SPRAY's debut album AMAZON HUNT, but at the time they just seemed like another garage band from france that people were excited about for no good reason (when vice highlights a band, it makes me wanna turn the other way)..... but perhaps i was wrong (and/or they've gotten better), cuz upon listening to CATHOLIC SPRAY's newly released second lp, EARTH SLIME, i found myself sucked deep down inside these reverbed infectious grooves, imagining myself getting drunk, having the time of my life at some dark smoky parisian dive bar watching CATHOLIC SPRAY's destructive mayhem live.  their new album out on BORN BAD is quite the statement, not just a collection of worn out cliches,  EARTH SLIME is an explosion of gluewave bent psychedelic garage punk, warped and twisted by a rambunctious band of french kids ready to set the world and their guitars on fire.....

CATHOLIC SPRAY start off somewhere in left field near FEELING OF LOVE, LE CHOMAGE, CHEVEU and MAGNETIX (all fellow scene cohorts) yet somehow seem more drugged up, more deranged and even more punk than their contemporaries there and over here.  fans of the oh sees / demon's claws, certainly ought to check EARTH SLIME out but only if they're willing to jump head first into the nightmare trip that is CATHOLIC SPRAY.  more off-center, unhinged and off-kilter than ty segall and co, the night beats and even the black lips, EARTH SLIME is psych rock in the vein of the GORIES covering PINK FLOYD, or the OBLIVIANS covering 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS...... yes it is that bonkers and totally addicting at the same time.........  certainly not safe for the unadventurous listeners out there, and not recommended for those you just wanna listen to some boring NUGGETS inspired bullshit garage.  CATHOLIC SPRAY are looking to unleash yer demons...... and EARTH SLIME certainly does the trick.  

so turn this shit up loud, 
and get ready to a night of wicked rock n roll..........
there's no going back.......

way fucking recommended.

chicago's west side will never be mistaken for flowers-yer-hair late 60s san fran or lysergic london from the same time period, but one would certainly be very amiss to think that the creativity bubbling over in chicago's psych scene is second rate......there's some strange, adventurous and enticing sounds emanating from chicago's dive bars, loft shows and run down former warehouses.....  and every day there seems to be a new killer band that just lives down the street from TINY GROOVES HQ......

the newest being ENERGY GOWN...... an upstart drone meets psych band whose debut 7 inch I WATCH THE SUN is one of the most entrancing singles i've spun all year long...... 

time-warping fuzz-soaked hallucinogenic experimental rock that's cheaper and more powerful than yr next tab of acid, 

let's just say ENERGY GOWN are more than ready to blown yer mind.......  

forget all those bands getting hyped at Austin Psych Fest.....I WATCH THE SUN is the real deal...... garage thump washed in eastern tinged, krautrock-coated nightmare psych, ENERGY GOWN take cues from local compadres CAVE and PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE SOUND, but dive head first in the vortex of SOFT MACHINE, CAN, LES RALLIZES DENUDES, AMON DUUL II, HAWKWIND and ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE.... yes !!! this is not some second rate boring psych that panders to the mainstream or merely cops a move from spacemen 3...... I WATCH THE SUN is a full on journey to the darker corners of your mind...... and though a single seems like the wrong format for a band intent of droning on and stretching out the structures of psych rock, these three songs are succinct and avoid the excess jamming that traps many good experimental bands in their own conceit.......  

i certainly hope ENERGY GOWN has a long player on the way,

cause if this single is just a taste, i need more.....and soon........

GR is the solo moniker of gregory raimo, guitarist of the fabulous french psych/noise outfit, GUNSLINGERS...... a band incidentally you ought to know about......

he just released a new album entitled A REVERSE AGE on MEXICAN SUMMER and it's killer slab of psych rock explosiveness......

mixing equal parts in MICHAEL YONKERS, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, LAST EXIT, CHROME, DNA, TELEVISION, FLOWER TRAVELIN BAND and BLUE CHEER, GR hits all cylinders with his angular noise bent psych rock mayhem..........  blues chords, garage rock riffage and free jazz drumming all stretched and distended into one noisy fray meant to both menace and enlighten..... you'll get lost in the aggression and guitar soloing and by the time the tone arm returns to its place after the b side, you might just be another person completely.......  

seriously one of the most heady psych jams of the year.......fans of LIGHTNING BOLT, BIRDS OF MAYA, SUN FLARE, PURLING HISS, KING BLOOD, HIGH RISE and MONOSHOCK will need to dig their teeth deep into the grooves of REVERSE AGE........

it's hands down recommended.....

kraus - sumpreme commander

the back story of a band doesn't matter.  never really has.  even though the blogs / zines / the hype generating media saturated world we live in would suggest otherwise.......IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC........i could care less where an album came from or who made it.....it could drop from the sky......and onto my turntable and if it catches my attention and sucks me into it's little grooves, THAT'S WHAT MATTERS..........

who is KRAUS?  i've heard he was part of new zealand's finest space punks THE FUTURIANS, but that might just be a rumor.  he is a mysterious fringe musician for sure, and i'd rather let the question of back story remain vague.  i'm sure he's from the same musical corner of the universe as SUN RA, MOONDOG and BRUCE HAACK.....but that is as far into researching as i want to go with KRAUS......anymore context would just detract from this wonderfully obscuro rock record that just appeared one day on my turntable.......

MONIKER RECORDS might just wanna keep the secret to themselves anyway......after all KRAUS' new album SUMPREME COMMANDER is a BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST WAY OUT THERE PSYCH RECORDS OF 2012......and you wouldn't want some other indie label just stealing him away if you were MONIKER, right.....?

SUPREME COMMANDER starts off somewhere in the realm of KING BLOOD and PURLING HISS with it's crunchy blown out psych riffage, wondering to and fro, melting away anything that comes close to pop structure....... what KRAUS aims for is more of an experimental / electronic / analog sound collage that's part sci-fi b-movie soundtrack and part post krautrock mind expanding......and a whole lotta OUT THERE SOUNDS....... think TANGERINE DREAM covering FLOWER TRAVELIN BAND.....or CAN and KRAFTWERK playing NINTENDO together (or making a soundtrack for their epic video game battle)..........but probably more to the point, GOBLIN and THROBBING GRISTLE getting high and collaborating on SPACE ROCK album together...........   

yes KRAUS has made a wholly unique and interesting AVANT ROCK LP THAT BEGS YOU TO LISTEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN.   experimental music is not just for the knob twiddlers and feedback sculptors......KRAUS proves that with a guitar, a keyboard, some effects pedals and a drum machine (and occasional drums) that you can record something exceptional....with no pro-tools foolery......just the kind of analog tricks and tape manipulating that made all those ENO and RESIDENTS lps SO GROUNDBREAKING.........(both of which are also influences on KRAUS)

do yerself a favor and check out SUPREME COMMANDER below... 
        because it's another highly recommended platter from MONIKER......
