the legendary DEAD MOON played two nights in chicago this past weekend and both shows couldn't have been more raw, in yer face, mind melting and KILLER!   not sure which set was better, friday at the empty bottle, or saturday at west fest, but both were chock full of hits....."fire in the western world" "i hate the blues" "54/40 or fight!" "13 going on 21" and "dead moon night" to name a few.......

as if their last tour wasn't enough of a farewell (which it wasn't), THRILL JOCKEY RECORDS released DOUBLE DAGGER's final EP 333 for RECORD STORE DAY this year..... packaged with a dvd of the documentary IF WE SHOUT LOUD ENOUGH (on the band, their final shows and impact on their DIY punk scene), 333 is a more than necessary exclamation point to one of my favorite DIY hardcore / punk bands of all time.   sure i'm biased--being friends with the band, going on tour with them, and helping promote their shows, seeing them play multiple times--but ask anyone who's seen DOUBLE DAGGER live and they will all say the same thing, these guys are one of the fucking best bands ever / if not life changing.......in a world where we're inundated with music and it's hard to get excited about new bands, DOUBLE DAGGER went about things the old school unpretentious DIYway: playing loft shows, releasing their own records, touring cities they felt a kinship with, helping other bands out, and being part of a baltimore scene that's since taken the world by storm...... no trying to be the next hype band or making a career out of it, or aiming for the mainstream...... all DOUBLE DAGGER wanted to is have a fucking fun time and play some RIOTOUS LOUD PUNK ROCK....and we're all the better for it..........

to say these guys will be missed is an understatement.  their last two chicago shows were off the fucking chain and probably the most fun i've ever had at any shows.....   it's too bad there's no more DOUBLE DAGGER to look forward to, but at least we have this film documenting the band and one last killer ep.......

and sometimes it's best to stop while you're ahead.  no need to tarnish all the awesome memories.

everything DOUBLE DAGGER has released is HEAVILY RECOMMENDED
and 333 IS NO EXCEPTION.

LIGHTNING BOLT is preparing to drop a fierce new slab of noise saturated vinyl this tuesday, entitled OBLIVION HUNTER via fucking loud as hell LOAD RECORDS....... and i couldn't be anymore excited.........

it's been three years since they dropped the gnarly / epic EARTHLY DELIGHTS LP on us and it's been way tooooooo looonnnnggggg.  nobody plays noise rock like LIGHTNING BOLT does, i mean nobody.......two piece, drum and bass fucking ear splitting mayhem........  

anything with their name stamped on it is very very recommended........ and this new lp is definitely gonna get massive spin time on the tiny groove turntable..........

here's the low down from the noise mongers at LOAD RECORDS -

Since forming in 1994, Lightning Bolt has taken a zig zag path to recording, playing and touring. Following in this pattern is the release of Oblivion Hunter, a collection of the band’s epic recording sessions over the last few years. Oblivion Hunter is a real cool time – loose, hard and loopy. From the get-go the sound is amped-up and free with an ear on the railroad tracks to the big sounds of industry and clamor. Bass sounds jump out of the speaker cones that conjure up ears in alien propulsion systems, nights in faraway wind tunnels, and brutal beatings at Gitmo. Drums and assorted FX pop in and out with the resolve of a finger quivering over the A-bomb button drunk on power and convinced of your need. This record is one of the few necessary things in your grim stretch of existence, played by a band with 20 years of total conviction to the destruction of your ear drums. The net is cast decidedly further this time out with North Pole square dancing colliding with shock troop whiplash, executed with the spontaneous interplay of neutrino collision. before BLACKOUT FEST even started, the party weekend had already begun with GET BENT's BIRTHDAY BASH at the CROWN TAP may 16th..... NONES, THE HECKS and STRYCHNINE all brought the house down with their riotous noisy rock n roll...... and MISS ALEX WHITE of WHITE MYSTERY was there to spin garage and punk records between sets......  and we all had an awesome time.....

...comprised of members from various other DENTON TEXAS punk bands such as BAD SPORTS and WAX MUSEUMS, 
   VIDEO makes some of the best dirty 
fun drunken punk rock around......


they throw in a little bit of psych, garage and krautrock in to mix, and in concert, these guys are a full on riot.........

SPIDER FEVER packed a wallop of good ol' blown out rock n roll friday night of BLACKOUT FEST....... one of my favorite new punk bands of 2012....these guys don't tour very often, so it was awesome to get to hear their fierce screeching punk rock in person.......... especially sandwiched between VIDEO and DAVILA 666......  what a night.......

one of my favorite bands on HOZAC RECORDS right now has gotta be the FUNGI GIRLS.... fuzzed out psych / angular garage rock like none else...... they most certainly keep the 13th floor elevators / texas psych flag flying high... 


FUNGI GIRLS melted many faces at BLACKOUT FEST including mine....their set was a crowd fave for sure... i rushed in from drinking whiskey with TELEDROME and KETAMINES at their tour van so i wouldn't miss any note of their set..... so fucking awesome......

KETAMINES were a riot to hang out with and watch all weekend long, they played an in-store at PERMANENT RECORDS on friday and a set at BLACKOUT FEST saturday.....both performances were incredible psych tinged garage punk affairs...... and if you haven't checked out their new lp SPACED OUT on MAMMOTH CAVE // SOUTHPAW RECORDS, yr missing out......


KETAMINES are super recommended and their new album is sure to make my year end best of list.......

the best part of BLACKOUT FEST is seeing bands for the first time.....and let me tell you i was fuckin stoked to finally see HOMOSTUPIDS in person.....some of the most apeshit crazy garage punk you'll ever witness.....and the most noisy punk rock destruction of the whole fest..... 


i couldn't help pogoing around and sloshing beers on my friends..... these guys are highly recommended...... if you can find their lps and singles, buy them immediately........

saturday night at BLACKOUT FEST.....chicago got a full taste of classic snotty bubblegum punk rock via the legendary REDD KROSS..... 


definitely one of my favorite sets of the weekend, REDD KROSS slammed through their classic BORN INNOCENT lp as well as their s/t debut ep.......

blackout fest recap - estrogen highs // medication

filling out the rest of the bill on sunday at BLACKOUT FEST was ESTROGEN HIGHS, MEDICATION and BARE MUTANTS..... all three bands which are highly recommended.....

ESTROGEN HIGHS play some of the best jangly angular guitar pop songs you'll hear all year long....their new lp IRRELEVANT FUTURE out on TROUBLE IN MIND is a record i just can't get enough of...and it was great to finally get the chance to see 'em live....

MEDICATION started the night out right with their woozy psych garage jams.... their full length on HOZAC should've caught more ears when it came out, but it's still in print, so grab a copy soon....... these guys were the under the radar faves of many of my friends at the fest...including me...

blackout fest recap - ROKY ERICKSON

holy shit this weekend was insane, so much rock n roll......it almost killed me......

thanks HOZAC RECORDS for throwing the always fantastic BLACKOUT FEST......

one of the highlights had to be ROKY ERICKSON of 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS fame closing out the fest on sunday.  roky is a legend and he pretty much invented psychedelic garage back in the 60s.... he's definitely on my list of fave musicians of all time... it was fucking awesome and unbelievable to see him in person and at one of my favorite venues, the empty bottle......

the show was way sold out and everyone so excited last night.....

TY SEGALL always tears down the house when he plays CHICAGO and last thursday was no different.... he fucking destroyed LINCOLN HALL, which was packed to the rafters and excitedly chaotic...


...and of course it was with such a stacked bill....opening for TY SEGALL was BITCHIN' BAJAS, THE STRANGE BOYS and WHITE FENCE..... all of which are faves here at tiny grooves......  


plus not only did ty segall play songs off his new SLAUGHTERHOUSE LP,  he did a short set with white fence playing songs off their new collaboration lp HAIR..... and all of it was so awesome...


i wish i had captured the whole night on my iphone, but i had too much fun hanging out with all the local garage rockers who were out that night.......
