2013 has been a fucking killer year for music, especially with an onslaught of amazing new bands that appear out of nowhere every day!  one such band i've been meaning to post about all year is memphis' new garage punk miscreants, MANATEEES!!!!!!   and everytime i was just about write about them i found out they were releasing yet another down n dirty single for yet another of my favorite record labels....  so i guess we'll cover them all right now, cuz you need to hear them yesterday!!!!!!

this year MANATEEES have released fucking MUST OWN 7 INCHES on PELICAN POW WOW, GONER, TIC TAC TOTALLY and JKSHK....  all of them blown out, drunken, thrashy punk like i can never get enough of.....   and as far as i'm concerned they might just be THE BAND TO SEE LIVE if yer ever in memphis....certainly they keep the city's longstanding tradition of unruly punk chaos alive.....

so if yer a junkie for BUCK BILOXI & THE FUCKS, TRUE SONS OF THUNDER, THE OBLIVIANS, REATARDS, GOLDEN PELICANS, PAMPERS, FOSTER CARE, GARY WRONG GROUP and anything on GONER / TOTAL PUNK / PELICAN POW WOW / CRYPT / JKSHK RECORDS, YOU FUCKING NEED TO INTRODUCE YERSELF TO YER NEW FAVORITE GO TO BAND!!!!!!!

BLACK GLADIATOR RECORDS copped a handful of extra songs from LAMONT "BIM" THOMAS aka OBNOX, enough to fill out a double 7 inch EP entitled CANABIBLE, OHIO and man oh man do you do not wanna miss out on this one........  

this EP finds OBNOX dissecting pop history as only he can..... CANABIBLE, OHIO is a romp through his musical roots, containing four covers and one original......... the lead off track, "deep in the dusk (redux)" is Bim turning dub, hiphop and punk upside down (warped goodness you have to hear to believe).........and the following tracks are remakes of classic songs by THE URINALS, GAUNT, KING JAMES VERSION (of resurrected numero group fame) and the fuckin' MCCOYS (yes HANG ON SLOOPY, wtf? but so fucking awesome)....all of them getting the snotty / blown out / high octane punk/soul/noise treatment that only OBNOX, the drummer/guitarist/noise-monger extraordinaire, could contrive........

if you know his other bands (PUFFY AREOLAS, THIS MOMENT IN BLACK HISTORY, BASSHOLES, UNHOLY TWO), this will not surprise you at all...... but this is not just some throwaway release comprised of late night jam sessions......CANABIBLE OHIO is an envelope pushing re-statement of the spirit of PUNK ROCK...........you know back we the punks were making truly LOUD WEIRD CRAZY AND NEW MUSIC........ so many people seem lost nowadays, but OBNOX is here to show 'em the way again.........

adventurous and noisy and bonkers as can be, 
CANABIBLE OHIO is just what you need to knock the apathy outta yer ears..........
so of course, it's SUPREMELY RECOMMENDED.

obnox - smoke woody haze ep

hot on the heels of last year's excellent PERMANENT lp ROJO and his recent A RAGIN' IN THE SUN single on ANYWAY, OBNOX has dropped a killer new ep on 12XU entitled SMOKE WOODY HAZE....
and hell fucking yeah i'm i excited..... any new release from Lamont "Bim" Thomas is a cause for celebration.....whether it be in the Bassholes, This Moment In Black History, Puffy Areolas, Unholy Two or as Obnox.....  

and as solo act, Bim has been on a fucking tear -- beginning with his Purple Reign and Masonic Reducer singles which are both monster slabs of blown out rock goodness...and continuing with his noise mongering debut lp I'M BLEEDING NOW (SMOG VEIL / 12XU)......  all of them highly recommended (ROJO made top ten in my year end list, and RAGIN IN THE SUN will definitely hit 2013's single list).......  

can OBNOX keep up this high octane turbo charged burst of creativity?  why YES! and SMOKE WOODY HAZE shows Bim has no desire to slow down one bit or get complacent or less experimental for that matter..... this ep might just be his most OUT-THERE release yet.......  so get ready for yer mind to melt and yer speakers to blow.......

SMOKE WOODY HAZE is OBNOX's beats oriented noise rock deconstruction of popular music, heady yet raw and loud just as you'd expect from Bim......12XU seemed worried that the high concept of this new ep might be lost on some of his long time fans, so they sent a little note along with the promo..... i don't think the back story is necessary at all -- the music says it all --but you might wanna read on anyway -

The only thing I hate more than 12" EP's are 10" EP's. Or failing that, someone calling it a "maxi-single". Why not just put my cock in a vice?

HOWEVER, the 8-song extended player in question, 'Smoke Woody Haze' (a salute of sorts from one Ohio icon to another) is not only a musical left turn of sorts for Bim Thomas, but was also, apparently, commissioned by another label that due to circumstances beyond our control (well, mine, at least --- I can't speak for Bim) is no longer involved in the project. Trust me, this soap opera shit is way less interesting than the musical contents. Not counting the 'I'm Bleeding Now' reissue, this makes 5 amazing Obnox records in 2012, and as such, Bim would be a prime candidate for Time's "Man Of The Year" if the award hadn't already been locked up by whoever invented The Chip Clip (condolences to whoever invented the clothespin ---I think you were totally screwed).

Bim says the next one's gonna be a double LP. Bob Pollard's on the phone --- something about Bim being "too prolific".

you might say OBNOX has chewed up hip hop and spit out something so unique and mesmerizing it doesn't even fall into a genre any more. Kinda like Madlib mashing jazz and hip hop on those "Yesterday's New Quintet" LPs, those outsider wonky ANTICON records lps, Mick Collins taking on techno and soul via the garage rock filter of the Dirtbombs or Puffy Areola's hardcore renditions of acid fried psych, OBNOX's 12 inch is a noise rock reinterpretation of rap and the soul music it samples all through his warped vision of blown out rock n roll fun.  

Absolutely one of the most interesting records you'll come across all year long.  And just the kind of distorted avant rule breaking we  all expect from Bim.....  so get ready to wear the grooves out.

Fans of his previous work, noise rock in general and anything genre busting, 
need to grab a copy of SMOKE WOODY HAZE now.......  
in a perfect world, these songs would all be club bangers and top 40 hits......

I always have to ask myself where and how Slovenly finds such awesome completely unknown European bands on a constant basis (Acid Baby Jesus and JC Satan for example).  Who knows, really?   

But they've done it again, this time with a too fast to live, too young to die blast of scuzzy punk rawwk from Italy's THEE OOPS.   Hardcore punk at its pure essence, this double shot double 7 inch, HAPPY CHARLIE, is raging fucking speed addled mayhem I haven't heard since Black Flag and Minor Threat.

Holy shit, this one's a keeper.  This one's even more in your face than their previous album, Taste of Zimbabwe.  With a punk so furious, you'll be flipping this record over and over and over again non stop, shotgunning PBRs in between sides, and maybe even forming your own mosh pit if you have too.

This is a punk rock party boiled down to four sides of LOUD RIOTOUS PUNK ROCK just like it should be.  (there's even an early beastie boys cover to keep the riot going.)

Thee Oops might just be the lost delinquent child of the early 80s west coast punk scene.  If you have albums from the Germs, Fear, JFA or Negative Approach, grab this Happy Charlie EP now.
