catholic spray - earth slime

maybe i just missed (or ignored) the hype surrounding CATHOLIC SPRAY's debut album AMAZON HUNT, but at the time they just seemed like another garage band from france that people were excited about for no good reason (when vice highlights a band, it makes me wanna turn the other way)..... but perhaps i was wrong (and/or they've gotten better), cuz upon listening to CATHOLIC SPRAY's newly released second lp, EARTH SLIME, i found myself sucked deep down inside these reverbed infectious grooves, imagining myself getting drunk, having the time of my life at some dark smoky parisian dive bar watching CATHOLIC SPRAY's destructive mayhem live.  their new album out on BORN BAD is quite the statement, not just a collection of worn out cliches,  EARTH SLIME is an explosion of gluewave bent psychedelic garage punk, warped and twisted by a rambunctious band of french kids ready to set the world and their guitars on fire.....

CATHOLIC SPRAY start off somewhere in left field near FEELING OF LOVE, LE CHOMAGE, CHEVEU and MAGNETIX (all fellow scene cohorts) yet somehow seem more drugged up, more deranged and even more punk than their contemporaries there and over here.  fans of the oh sees / demon's claws, certainly ought to check EARTH SLIME out but only if they're willing to jump head first into the nightmare trip that is CATHOLIC SPRAY.  more off-center, unhinged and off-kilter than ty segall and co, the night beats and even the black lips, EARTH SLIME is psych rock in the vein of the GORIES covering PINK FLOYD, or the OBLIVIANS covering 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS...... yes it is that bonkers and totally addicting at the same time.........  certainly not safe for the unadventurous listeners out there, and not recommended for those you just wanna listen to some boring NUGGETS inspired bullshit garage.  CATHOLIC SPRAY are looking to unleash yer demons...... and EARTH SLIME certainly does the trick.

so turn this shit up loud,
and get ready to a night of wicked rock n roll..........
there's no going back.......

way fucking recommended.

feeling of love - la peur est une illusion

france's FEELING OF LOVE are a difficult band to pin down.....calling it deconstructed garage punk might be the closest you'll get to a genre, seeing that the owe huge debts to the noisy antics of pussy galore, the swampy post blues of the chrome cranks and scientists and a huge love for the crypt / sympathy records back catalog....though all that being said, there's something uniquely art bent, glue wave and french going on with FEELING OF LOVE's post modern cave stomp...... you can imagine them huddled around a bottle of whiskey next to some broken synths with like minded cohorts CHEVEU, JC SATAN, THE ANALS, LE CHOMAGE, SONIC CHICKEN 4 and AH KRAKEN......(btw, all super riotous french bands you need to check out)......

....i'm not sure what's going on in the dive clubs across the sea, but fuck if these french kids aren't warping american garage / punk in the most interesting and subversive ways......

following superb lps on KILL SHAMAN and BORN BAD, as well as a split single with TY SEGALL on PERMANENT, FEELING OF LOVE is back with another full platter of blown out spastic garage burning punk jams, this time via CAPTCHA RECORDS......the new album entitled LE PEUR EST UNE ILLUSION is a collection of their early singles from 2006-2008, when the band was morphing from a one man bedroom pyrotechnics show into a full on hellbent punk riot......  though not a best of, LE PEUR EST UNE ILLUSION acts as a good starting point for those not initiated into the dark feedback obsessed world of FEELING OF LOVE........

and like most comps of this nature, it would be cost prohibitive and time consuming to track all these singles down, since their 7 inches on SWEET ROT, FLORIDA'S DYING, SQUOODGE, AVANT and others were super limited and long gone.......  and CAPTCHA lovingly added to the album are a few unreleased tracks as icing to the cake for those who might have a few of those 7 inches....

FEELING OF LOVE might be overlooked by many non-europeans since there's quite a garage explosion happening here, but hopefully with this new album CAPTCHA can change that.......

this is a repeat and mind bending listen......
very recommended.

JC SATAN - hell death samba

when SLOVENLY RECORDS gets ready to release another full length, i get excited..... lately they've released some gems from a couple of obscure european bands (ie, thee oops, acid baby jesus), and their newest release keeps that ball rolling.........

JC SATAN plays dark heavy prog/psych influenced garage rock.....noisy reverb drenched rockers mixed with jangly pop ballads.....

put them in the same camp as CHEVEU, FEELING OF LOVE and LIMINANAS.....the european garage scene is not just rehashing old american rock cliches, they're making their own quite strange, but good brand of garage rock.....and JC SATAN is just another example of the creativity happening there........

i think their new lp HELL DEATH SAMBA is going to catch some ears.....its got my attention already....

here's what SLOVENLY had to say about the new JC SATAN lp...
a beast of a sophomore slam from our beloved European juvenile delinquents J.C. SATAN. Hell Death Samba, like their previous opus Sick of Love, is a beautifully morose, sonic ode to the days of wine and dead roses, effortlessly melding goth with garage & heavy psych, filtered through a titanic pile of noise. This latest effort sees more of lyricist PAULA S.'s vocals spotlighted in various structures from cranky twisters to bouncy tropicalia, like a crack pipe full of indy-rock with the devils pulse and a witch's cackle. Tricked out with a wealth of moods from huge punk rave-ups to underwater pop art dreamscapes, we've been simultaneously blessed & cursed with another provocative slab: proof that this demented crew of French and Italian pranksters are no one-trick-poodles.

les breastfeeders - dans la gueule des jours

thanks goes to WFMU's TEENAGE WASTELAND for turning me on to this awesome new album by one of canada's finest garage bands.

i thought LES BREASTFEEDERS just disappeared into thin air, but they're back with another catchy fun garage rock record....  the last album they did was way back in 2006 and not many people noticed them.....

you might not know about these MONTREAL natives, but this is some SERIOUS french canadian rock n roll......

you need to listen up........  this is so good, you might think this lp was recorded in DETROIT in the heyday of the 90s garage revival but for the french lyrics.......  brings to mind THE SIGHTS, APRIL MARCH with THE MAKERS, THE DETROIT COBRAS, BANTAM ROOSTER and many bands that used to be on SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY.....

i'm not sure how easy this will be to find on vinyl outside canada,
so click here to download the new lp,  dans la gueule des jours.

feeling of love - dissolve me / ok judge revival

let's not forget that there's plenty of awesome french garage rock out there......SONIC CHICKEN 4, LIMINANAS, CHEVEU and FEELING OF LOVE.......

despite a somewhat hippie namesake, FEELING OF LOVE is one of my fav new bands.....combining noisy psych with stomping garage punk....... one of the most unique sounding bands i've mentioned on tiny grooves yet............

here's what TERMINAL BOREDOM has to say about my new fav french band (this is a much better description than i might write)......
Feeling of Love may very well be one of the most under-rated acts out there these days, but it seems they're starting to get their due... FOL bring back best of Nineties-garage-blues (Oblivians, JSBX, and Doo Rag at their finest) without the stench of revisionism, updating those styles with a Pussy Galore-like slop of noise and a healthy dose of acerbic wit. Guitars alternately slide and slash, keyboards get punched and stepped on amid the fray, Frenchmen sneer and whoop at you, drums boom and then turn coffee can hollow...they run blues-trash through the gauntlet and come out the other side reborn as some snarling beast. One of these tunes sounds like the Bassholes if they were on AmRep. Others sound like Spencer, if he were REALLY a bad ass and not just pretending. The best song titles ever and gratuitous use of the word pussy just ratchet the entertainment value up a few clicks. Beautiful, like a cranked-up Bob Log fronting Unsane!
There's so much I love about this band right now. Invigorating music. Cheveu may be everyone's current French darlings, but Feeling of Love hold the keys to my heart. Buy all of their records now if you haven't already.
