the young - chrome cactus

music reviewing post y2k suffers from a regurgitation problem.  everyone decides whether they like album for superfluous reasons and then proceeds to praise or demolish said lp based solely upon the one sheet that comes with their review copy.  so an album sounds like this..."FILL IN THE BLANK"... "I love it.  It's the new thing!!!!" Or "I hate it because it sounds like "FILL IN THE BLANK!!!!! Yeah, it's a terrible mix of these said bands and not worth yer time."  

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PEOPLE ACTUALLY LISTENING TO AN ALBUM A FEW TIMES BEFORE THEY JUST DECIDED THE RECORD LABEL THAT PUT IT OUT WAS RIGHT (OR HORRIBLY WRONG) AND TELLING EVERYONE WHAT THEY NEED TO LISTEN TO??????

but does anyone really dig into those grooves and form their own opinion????  few and far between.  and that my friend is sad.  

well i still do and one album that caught me by surprise and off guard is the CHROME CACTUS by THE YOUNG, out next week on MATADOR.  by the looks of it, it would seem little too mainstream for my tastes now days, but UPON LISTENING to CHROME CACTUS, i've become HOOKED!!!!!

this austin texas quartet is resolutely stubborn about being a GUITAR ROCK BAND in a time when that's become passe in most people's eyes.   and their messy mix of POST PUNK UNDERGROUND ROCK AND PRE GRUNGE GUITAR ANTICS, COMPLETE WITH IN YER FACE RIFFS AND A HAZY SWIRL OF SHOEGAZING FEEDBACK is a trip back to a time when becoming a infatuated with a band was not about PRETENSION and HYPE.   THE YOUNG's third album is a refreshing mix of MEAT PUPPETS, SONIC YOUTH, RIDE, VOLCANO SUNS, HUSKER DU, SEBADOH, POLVO, MBV, SLINT, MUDHONEY, CHAVEZ and any number of mostly forgotten late eighties / early nineties RnR bands that flew below the radar.........

spin after spin, the heavy guitar racket on CHROME CACTUS becomes almost psychedelic, the slower burning shoegaze bent anthems become seared into yer skull and the volume knob on yer stereo will slowly inch towards 10......and at full blast and three or four times in, the subtly of the YOUNG's songwriting will become more than apparent.   THESE ARE SONGS THAT NEED TO BE UNRAVELLED BY REPEAT LISTENS.  

perhaps that's why some reviewers of CHROME CACTUS have stuck the one sheet.  or stated how much they hate this lp.  because like any good rock album, CHROME CACTUS is not all surface.  it has depth that requires an attention span to get to.  and not many people have that these days.

FOR THOSE WILLING TO TAKE THE PLUNGE, it's worth it.  just as rewarding as any new album by DEERHUNTER, THE MEN, PURLING HISS, METZ, NIGHT BEATS and THE BLACK ANGELS....

but you know, decide for yerself....

take a minute out of yer day to BLAST the uber classic 1981 self titled debut from LA's ADOLESCENTS!!!!!!  this is early hardcore punk at it's best!!!!!  and if you don't have a copy yet, you better change that STAT!!!!!!!

spike in vain - disease is relative

ohio's SPIKE IN VAIN only ever released one lp, 1984's "DISEASE IS RELATIVE" (on TRANS DADA) but it's a fucking killer slab of noise bent / post punk damage hardcore punk...... an album that should've cemented their place in the KILLED BY DEATH hall of fame....but alas it's been mostly forgotten (aside from a few obscure comps that included the band)....

so educate yerself, and spin "DISEASE IS RELATIVE" via youtube below.....

and then hunt down a copy of the lp for yer collection.  
cuz it's absolutely ESSENTIAL!!!!!!!!!

jack ruby - s/t lp

FEEDING TUBE RECORDS just released the holy grail of the art damaged nyc punk / no wave scene from the late 70s, the collected recordings of JACK RUBY !!!!!!!!!   issued as a single s/t lp, this album compiles all extant recordings from this mysterious band who pioneered no wave before it was called no wave, started tearing punk apart at the seams before the first ramones lp hit the shelves and played a large part in sparking the creativity of teenage jesus and the jerks, dna, sonic youth and a host of other noise bent, avant rock bands from the seedy parts of manhattan back in the day......

fans of proto punk weirdness, no wave noise, early punk and anything rule breaking RnR, need JACK RUBY now!!!!!   seriously thanks to byron coley and feeding tube records for finally giving all these tracks a home on wax for constant playback at HIGH VOLUME!!!!!!

jack ruby might just seem like a footnote to punk history, but one listen to these tracks will prove how influential these tracks really are, even though the band only played a few shows and never released an album during their short existence.........

eastlink - s/t lp

IN THE RED just released the killer s/t debut from aussie drone punks EASTLINK and you need this blast of gnarly blown out RnR ASAP!!!!!!!!

after a couple of stellar fuzz coated / art damaged singles and a self titled tape, EASTLINK is here with their world weary, minimal chord feeback punk statement!!!!!  a sort of anti-thesis on all that is right and wrong in the current state of ROCK N ROLL.   dipping deep in the possibilities of repetition and simplicity borrowed from la monte young on thru krautrock and fusing those lessons to the ugly punk we've all come to love from the aussie scene and thus melding that unwieldy beast to the most damaged / warped outsider psych rock you can imagine, EASTLINK IS A DIRECT REFUTATION on all those cliche loving bands pretending it's still 1968, or 1982 or whatever year certain subgenres of ROCK N ROLL calcified into a mold, ready to the next band to inject their plastic selves into!

EASTLINK is about escape from the narrow demarcations of analog sound that people argue back and forth about.  their name might allude to a highway in australia just as much as it might refer to kraftwerk's mind bending vision of the autobahn.  both bands seeing beyond the possibilities given to them.  EASTLINK transcends punk or perhaps post punk by adding / subtracting psych / noise / melody and leaving nothing but a menacing mess of layered noise for yer ears to meditate / dissect with every listen.  a band with four guitars and a primal drummer and no bass playing anchor, EASTLINK is UNHINGED DISTORTO KOSMISCHE MUSIC FOR THE YOUNG AND REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!!

not recommended for the musically unadventurous.  but definitely for those into SONIC YOUTH, DESTRUCTION UNIT, MONOSHOCK, DISAPPEARS, UV RACE, SPACIN, CAN and the like.......

frantix - my dad's a fuckin alcoholic

ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES just released what just might be the REISSUE OF THE YEAR, a complete discography of colorado KBD punk legends FRANTIX, compiled as MY DADS A FUCKIN ALCOHOLIC !!!!!!!!!!   and um you need this blast of depravity NOW!!!!!!!!!

little fanfare has existed for FRANTIX outside the punk rarities hoarders, fans who checked them out because Mudhoney covered one of their songs, those who have KBD #6, or as a footnote to THE FLUID's SUB POP records success, BUT THAT DECISIVELY SHOULD NOT BE THE CASE !!!!!!!!!   FRANTIX WERE THE REAL DEAL, FACE MELTNG, EXPLOSIVE, FERAL, MENACING, FUZZ COATED, 80s HARDCORE PUNK BAND.......    

they only released two EPs and a demo tape during their short run in the early 80s and that might be part of the reason they've been mostly forgotten, but MAN HOPEFULLY THAT'LL CHANGE.  their BLACK FLAG / CIRCLE JERKS / JFA amphetamine hardcore was bruised with GARAGE ROCK VIBES, PSYCHEDELIC NOISE and a heavy dose of SLUDGY BAD ATTITUDE...... you can hear shards of FLIPPER, MODERN LOVERS, SABBATH and THE NEW YORK DOLLS in their RIPPER BLOWN OUT HARDCORE which set them apart from the cookie cutter hardcore scene that was emerging at the time.......  they even cover PINK FLOYD's INTERSTELLAR OVERDRIVE and make it more punk than you can even imagine!!!!!!  and well the title track is a CLASSIC PUNK ANTHEM as well as other jams like DANCIN' TO PUNK and FM EARS......and well pretty much every song they wrote could've been a single in a alternate universe!!!!!!

thankfully MY DAD'S A FUCKIN ALCOHOLIC gathers all their chaos into one lp for us to savor.  both 7 inchs, their demo and one helluva live set, THIS LP SHOULD CEMENT FRANTIX IN EVERYONE'S LIST OF ALL TIME GREAT PUNK BANDS.......  really, this isn't so stupid fanboy reissue of a shoddy local band that someone is still obsessing about.  FRANTIX ought to be mentioned just as frequently as the GERMS, MINOR THREAT and any of those other bands that've hogged all the attention all these years.

SO YEAH THIS ONE'S RECOMMENDED LIKE A MOTHER FUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO I STARTED WRITING MY BEST OF LIST FOR THE YEAR ALREADY AND IT GOES.... OBNOX..... OBNOX.... OBNOX!!!!!!!!!!!!  YES!!!!!!!   and i bet yer list will look the same as soon as you hear his new album LOUDER SPACE out now via 12XU RECORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

OBNOX has been on a well documented tear these past two years, that everyone knows, but what few people realize is how bad BIM is making everyone else look.......(think of any just OK indie RnR band now).....  and LOUDER SPACE just knocks everyone else outta the park...(if these other bands were even in the same ballpark to begin with...)....

OBNOX has turned everything up to 11 on his new lp, the layers and layers of blown out RnR are even more GNARLY AND INFECTIOUS, the razorsharp melodies are EVEN MORE INJURY CAUSING and the songs are all but guaranteed to MELT YER FUCKING MIND..........  and if you thought OBNOX was a just a one man garage punk wrecking ball in person, LOUDER SPACE proves that once a full studio is at his disposal the SONIC VOODOO he is capable of has NO MATCH!!!!!!!!  

and though this album is tacitly GARAGE PUNK in genre, it incorporates and warps OHIO PUNK, RUSTBELT R&B, AMPED UP GARAGE, NOISY PSYCH AND EVEN HIPHOP INSPIRED FUNK through BIM's wildly creative and disruptive mind, leaving you with an album LOUD, HARD HITTING AND ALL OF ITS OWN CLASS.........

FLIPPER's first album, GENERIC FLIPPER, is one of the most menacing, swampy, feedback & mud caked rock n roll albums of all time and if you haven't it heard it yet, NOW IS THE TIME!!!!!!!!!

seriously they took punk rock, which at the time was calcifying into a simple loud/fast hardcore formula, into whole new noise damaged, warped directions......and to say that countless bands cite GENERIC FLIPPER as an inspiration doesn't come close to how insanely killer FLIPPER's debut lp was and still is.........

their first three albums are all CLASSIC, but GENERIC FLIPPER is one of my hands down favorite spins of all time.........

ono - diegesis

chicago's gospel-meets-noise art punks ONO are back with a brand new album, DIEGESIS, out via MONIKER RECORDS.  so you better let yer ears expand their consciousness now, cuz this is one wild genre-bending, cosmic post punk ride!!!!!!!

ONO formed during the early days of the chicago punk scene but always had a more experimental goal in mind than louder, faster, dumber.....  their sound is a mix of throbbing post punk, noise coated gospel chanting, pre industrial droning and punk rock attitude of throwing everything out the window.......  after their initial run of two album, ONO went into hibernation......until recently.....  in 2012 they released a new album, ALBINO and showed the world what they were doing back in the 80s, still sounds fresh and avant even today.......   and when ALBINO hit the shelves i couldn't say enough kind words about ONO (click here for that review).....and that would've been enough..... ONO could've retreated once more and left the world a better place.....

however they weren't down blowing minds yet.... HENCE DIEGESIS....... further articulating their cryptic political, tonal and spiritual mission, their new album is even more entrancing and perspective changing........    at times treading the same avant blues ground of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, the sonic desolation of THROBBING GRISTLE, the post punk implosion of THIS HEAT, the no wave rejection of TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS and the all out search for a new meaningful form of music as THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO, ONO is leaping beyond what can even be called art punk or noisy post punk........ and boundary pushing is alway a good thing.......

sure these days with yer nice little sub genres and yer crowd pleasing reliable-as-ever cliches, RnR this out there might not gain much attention or creditability.......  sure its weird and dark and subversive......but at exactly times like this do we need an album like DIEGESIS.......  

things are afoot and you need to be tuned into the right vibrations.........  and i guarantee you won't heard another experimental RnR album that'll grab you like this all year long.......

joel rl phelps and the downer trio - gala

former SILKWORM guitarist/vocalist JOEL RL PHELPS isn't exactly a household name, even for those music junkies amongst us, but after leaving his more famous band, he's released a handful of albums under his own name to relative obscurity (all of which you should track down)....and now after a nine year haitus he's back with a new lp on 12XU with his DOWNER TRIO entitled GALA.....

these eleven tracks that compose GALA are a morose, stripped down journey through the darker corners of yer mind, at times loud and distorted like the best of the 90s underground rock scene and at others an enlightening yet twisting and turning trip through a nightmarish post grunge world of disappointment and adulthood none of us wanted....  an album that sounds timeless and yet recalls a time when we all thought SUB POP, DRAG CITY and MATADOR were finally gonna make a dent in the bad music coming out of our radios.......(well at least those of us over thirty...)
