purling hiss - lounge lizards ep

PURLING HISS is lo-fi noisy psych rock...... from philly.

they could be the most amazing band you've never heard of........yet!

good rock riffs under layers of feedback and noise, catchy hooks and hazy psych vibes..........

......i don't know why i haven't mentioned these guys on the blog before........

here's what PERMANENT RECORDS had to say about the s/t lp they released by PURLING HISS:
Purling Hiss is one of Philly's Best! Purling Hiss is the side-project of Holy Mountain recording artists, Birds of Maya, guitarist Mike Pollize. Birds of Maya are a full-on psychedelic rock band from Philly. Apparently, Birds just aren't full-on enough to satisfy Pollize's far-out tendencies. On his debut solo record, Pollize plays bass, drums, and guitar, relentlessly, as if he's playing to save his life. This recording is so intense that the pressing plant told us they'd risk breaking their equipment if they cut the lacquers with the original master. We sent 'em a new master and it sounds great! For Fans Of: Birds of Maya, Earthless, Loop, High Rise, Les Rallizes Denudes, and Lo-Fi Blown-Out Psych.

PURLING HISS has one lp and a split with PUFFY AREOLAS on PERMANENT, one ep on RICHIE, an lp on WOODSIST, and a brand new ep on MEXICAN SUMMER.......quite the respectable resume for a band that was just a basement four track recording side project a couple of years ago..........

so make SURE YOU LISTEN TO PURLING HISS, it will melt yr ears.......

click here to grab/preview the LOUNGE LIZARDS ep on MEXICAN SUMMER.......

and you can check out PURLING HISS over on DAYTROTTER.....doing three songs off the WOODSIST released PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.........

up and comers - OBN IIIs

OBN IIIs is ORVILLE from BAD SPORTS side project........
trashy wild garage / punk...........
the proto-punk of the MC5 and the drunken rock n roll of johnny thunders are definite influences, but you can also compare OBN IIIs to fellow TEXAS rockers marked men, john wesley coleman and high tension wires ........

OBN IIIs have started with a bang, releasing a handful of killer 7 inches this year......and are now set to unleash a new album and destroy the kids at GONER FEST.........

here's how REVOLVER describes THE ONE AND ONLY lp,  OUT SEPTEMBER 6 on TIC TAC TOTALLY RECORDS........

OBN IIIs drop a seriously heavyweight album following three killer singles/EPs. Some of the best mid-paced punk rock of the “City Slang” vibe...and one of the best live bands of recent memory...now flirting with a Sabbath-caliber weight in the sound, added snot-nosed attitude, and tighter grooves. The resulting record is an absolutely-no-bullshit, tight-yet-screaming wild, rock record full of the wicked, double-deep-fried-guitars searing in and out of ORVILLE’s way. All the primal attack and hooky sheen of the self-titled EP is all over this thing along with that dark, nihilistic affect of “Mark On You,” now planted with heavier footing. The “Texas-tinged IVY GREEN” tag still applies, but adds a Vamps meets Stooges swagger big time. Frying the shit out of stuff where appropriate. And a lot more howling and magma comes spewing up through any potential crack in the surface here. Highlights include EVERYTHING. Recorded by Orville in hot-as-fuck Austin, Texas, as if enough sweat wasn’t baked into these tapes.
GO BUY THIS LP WHEN IT COMES OUT........highly recommended!

listen below.....

and watch some live footage....

myelin sheaths - get on your nerves

MYELIN SHEATHS are lo-fi punk/ garage pop from ALBERTA.......

they flew under my radar last year, but their 2010 lp "GET ON YOUR NERVES" is quite the rock n roll album.........in retrospect it would've made my top ten list for the year.......

recommended if you like  GOLDEN TRIANGLE, THE OH SEES, BLOOD ON THE WALL, TYVEK and HARLEM.....or pretty much anything on HOZAC records, which released a single of theirs in 2009.........(which, btw, you still might be able to find)

and though tiny grooves highly recommends them, the myelin sheaths broke up earlier this year, so you'll just have to enjoy their only full length lp.........which you can download here.......

listen below.......

black bug - s/t lp

BLACK BUG are swedish synth punk.....

they caught my attention because HOZAC RECORDS is releasing their new single this month......

fans of LOST SOUNDS, COLA FREAKS, TOTAL CONTROL and DIGITAL LEATHER will love BLACK BUG.........

quite catchy, dark and fun......

click here to download the s/t lp...on FDH RECORDS....it was limited to 500 copies and sold out, so don't feel bad for downloading it.......its the only way to grab it.

and GO BUY THE "POLICE HELICOPTER" 7 INCH FROM HOZAC at a record store near you......

.......with influences like the jesus and mary chain, touch & go records, killed by death garage punk and 60s psych....SEX CHURCH suck you into their dark noisy world and don't wanna let you out.......

i'm looking forward to the new LP on LOAD, but until then, grab some of their earlier releases.......

natural child - 1971

NATURAL CHILD is stoned out catchy garage/punk from NASHVILLE....

these kids reach beyond the normal cliche of the genre (which is you try to pretend yr on the NUGGETS BOX SET), by incorporating blue cheer / black sabbath 70s ominous rock vibes into a mix with psych, blues and a bit of country rock......

.....and definitely a heavy dose of ROLLING STONES, maybe STICKY FINGERS or EXILE ON MAIN STREET........

and they didn't name the lp 1971 for nothing, keep that in mind when looking for their musical influences......

fans of the black lips, turbo fruits, night beats, goodnight loving, reigning sound and last year's men will all find something to like in NATURAL CHILD.

so click here to download their brand new lp 1971
(out on infinity cat)......

and chicago you got TWO CHANCES to see NATURAL CHILD in the next few weeks......

boston spaceships- let it beard

so i'm a huge GUIDED BY VOICES fan, but i've kinda lost track of the crazy prolific ROBERT POLLARD in the last couple of years.  yeah there was the reunion shows with GBV, which were awesome....

but he usually releases at least three lps a year, and i hadn't much noticed many of them.   not out of disrespect, but because there's so much good music being released..........it's hard to put every lp on yr turntable every year......

so sorry robert i've ignored you since yr lp "from a compound eye"...... but you just threw an excellent new album in my face....the BOSTON SPACESHIPS lp, LET IT BEARD, and it has me by the hooks.......

a sprawling lo-fi indie rock album chock so full of ideas, it almost explodes at the seams......

a bit of 90s lo-fi mixed with 70s experimental rock and 80s post punk......

BOSTON SPACESHIPS could stand out on its own, apart from the mark as being a post-GUIDED BY VOICES project........  and that means even if you aren't a GBV fan, you ought to listen at least once..... not everyone can write songs as well ROBERT POLLARD.....

so click here to grab LET IT BEARD.

hella - tripper

HELLA has alway been one of my noise rock favs.....

along with LIGHTNING BOLT and THE FYLING LUTTENBACHERS.....

they took a break after their 2007 lp THERE'S NO 666 IN OUTERSPACE........ but the sabbatical is no more......

HELLA has returned as a fierce two piece once again, with a new album that will destroy yr ears........

the new lp is just as good as CHURCH GONE WILD/CHIRPIN HARD and DEVIL ISNT RED.....

so click here to download TRIPPER.

and have yer face melted, just like it should, be one of the best noise acts out there.........

listen below to HEADLESS off the new LP.....

kitchen's floor - tour dates / new lp

KITCHEN'S FLOOR are noise punkers from Australia.  part CHROME CRANKS, GUIDED BY VOICES, ROYAL TRUX and CIRCLE PIT......... lo-fi hazy songs that definitely grab your attention in a world overrun by kids forming indie bands......

SILTBREEZE is releasing their new LP in late september, "LOOK FORWARD TO NOTHING" and KITCHEN'S FLOOR is playing GONER FEST this year and free in-stores at both the LA and Chicago PERMANENT RECORDS.....  so thats a trifecta of approval for me.......

check these Aussie kids out.....

jacuzzi boys - glazin

JACUZZI BOYS are florida's answer to the sunny surf influenced garage bands from california, especially san fran, that are making inroads in my record collection........

catchy fun garage pop with equal parts 60s jangle and 80s power pop vibes, the JACUZZI BOY's new lp GLAZIN' is up there on my list for best of the year........

click here to grab their new album out on HARDLY ART august 30th......

and if you don't own NO SEASONS, their debut lp on FLORIDA'S DYING, go get it now.......

LISTEN TO THE TITLE TRACK OFF THE NEW LP "GLAZIN" BELOW......

human eye - they came from the sky

HUMAN EYE is apocalyptic art punk from detroit, or "alien punk" as TIMMY VULGAR, the lead singer/guitarist likes to call it.......

very similar to his awesome former band, THE CLONE DEFECTS.......or his solo project TIMMY'S ORGASM that played HOZAC BLACKOUT FEST this year.........

Put the weird pop experimentation of PERE UBU, with the synth mayhem of LOST SOUNDS and the raw detroit rock of THE STOOGES.......you kinda get close to what HUMAN EYE sounds like.......

one of the most interesting LPs of 2011.......

click here to download the new HUMAN EYE lp "THEY CAME FROM THE SKY" out on sacred bones....  (and track down some of their older lps on IN THE RED, its worth the search)

and go see HUMAN EYE play at the EMPTY BOTTLE 10/1 with TY SEGALL and MIKAL CRONIN............

supercharger - s/t lp

SUPERCHARGER is one of my favorite garage punk bands ever........

along with the MUMMIES, the GORIES, the OBLIVIANS and BILLY CHILDISH'S various projects........

....founded by GREG LOWERY, who went on to form two other awesome bands, THE RIP OFFS and the ZODIAC KILLERS, as well as running the seminal garage punk label RIP OFF RECORDS..........

SUPERCHARGER was snotty loud rock n roll played by some punks who loved THE SONICS.......  they weren't around long, but the catchy BUDGET ROCK they played ought to be in everyone's collection........

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY TINY GROOVES!

one of the lps i always go back to when i get tired of the ceaseless wave of new bands......

click here to download the SUPERCHARGER S/T LP  very out of print, so buy it if you find it.......

MASONICS - In Yr NIght of Dreams

THE MASONICS are........

Bruce Brand (drums)......
    MILKSHAKES,
    THEE MIGHTY CAESARS,
    THE HEADCOATS
Mick Hampshire (guitar, vocals).......
    MILKSHAKES
John Gibs (bass).......
    THE WILDEBEESTS
    HOLLY GOLIGHTY
    THE KAISERS

in order words, this is a quite the british super group garage band, or a newer incarnation of the MILKSHAKES minus BILLY CHILDISH.......

one of the best live shows, i've ever seen.....these guys put rock n roll back into garage rock.......

kinda like adding punk rock and soul to the sound of the yardbirds or early kinks.......

suggested if you like any records on CRYPT, SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY, GET HIP, DAMAGED GOODS or GONER........

click here to grab the new MASONICS' lp "In Your Night of Dreams..."

mikal cronin - s/t lp

MIKAL CRONIN has a new s/t lp coming out on TROUBLE IN MIND records September 20th.....

you may know mikal from his lp with ty segall "REVERSE SHARK ATTACK" or from THE MOONHEARTS (one of the best lps from 2010)........ or perhaps from the castleface records GROUP FLEX comp, posted recently on tiny grooves.......

but let's just say this is garage / fuzz pop at its best.....

i didn't even realize until today that mikal cronin was about to unleash a solo album, and an lp produced by ty segall at that.......

LISTEN BELOW
(both these tracks are available for download at MIKAL CRONIN's bandcamp site.......)

CRYPT RECORDS CHEAPO SAMPLER

if you wanna know where my heart lies, its mostly with the garage punk bands
on CRYPT RECORDS in the 90s.......

every band on this comp is worth digging for........

MMOSS - ¡

MMOSS are psychedelic adventurers that just happen to play rock n roll........

they've put out one of the most enveloping albums i've heard in quite sometime......MMOSS definitely sucks you deep into their acid fried world with ¡, their debut lp.....  much like OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL, or perhaps THE PEOPLES TEMPLE........

these new hampshire kids should've played woodstock...or hung out in san fran in the late 60s......or at least been with the ELEPHANT 6 circle when it started out........

and unlike many of the indie kids, they don't shy away from heading into hippie rock territory......flowers in the hair, flutes......SOFT MACHINE, HAWKWIND, SPIRIT, PINK FLOYD records spinning by the light of lava lamps......

all i can say is that i can't stop listening to MMOSS, and maybe you'll feel the same way.......

SO LISTEN BELOW........
and click the link to DOWNLOAD ¡ FOR FREE (you have to name the price as zero).......
but if you like it, buy it from burger records on lp or tape..........

blasted canyons - s/t

THE BLASTED CANYONS are the next big thing......

their noisy psych garage rock will melt yr face.........

much like their CASTLEFACE records label mates and san francisco cohorts, the blasted canyons imagine a world where punk never lost its garage rock roots,  where noise rock is always on the radio, and a place where everybody's parents record collection is full of psych/experimental rock lps instead of fucking carly simon and three dog night.......

too many bands just turn back the clock and listen/learn from the pop drivel of the past,  THE BLASTED CANYONS swirl around in all the good crazy experimental records they can get their hands on, and make some fucking crazy loud rock n roll......

there is a reason john from the oh sees signed these guys to his record label, and this may be my favorite record of the year.........

click here to grab BLASTED CANYONS s/t debut LP.........

up and comers - the whines

when one of yr favorite musicians shares his/her favorite bands, you ought to listen....... you often get turned onto new obscure bands.....

at the end of 2010, TY SEGALL told brooklynvegan his top five records of the year......  all of them made tiny groove's list as well, with one notable exception......THE WHINES' with their debut lp, HELL TO PLAY......
THE WHINES transcend the lo-fi tag with real, honest songs that are not hipster genre exercises or an act of desperate trend hopping. Hell To Play is a major leap forward in fidelity and songwriting from their 7-inch. Anchored by KARIANNE’s hypnotic voice and basslines and colored by JESSE’s raw guitar and BOBBY’s primitive drumming. Tracks were recorded alternately by ROB & ROD from EAT SKULL with one track recorded by KYLE from METH TEETH/MEERCAZ and two tracks recorded by the band. This LP brings to mind things like Neil Young, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Dead Moon and Cheater Slicks filtered through contemporary ears/minds. Sequenced like a classic album with moody rock songs, melted psych garage tunes and strange, haunting heartbreakers. Play this over and over. You will be rewarded.  REVOLVER distro

HELL TO PLAY is quite the noise pop / garage record.....  heavy on the analog/lo-fi/fuzz sound that's hip right now, but with good pop songwriting under all the layers of noise.......

reminds me of white fence, times new viking, psychedelic horseshot, sebadoh, home blitz and ty segall (of course)......

the whines are a promising young band that you ought to watch out for..........

click here to grab THE WHINES' HELL TO PLAY lp (2010)....

royal baths in chicago august 29th

THE ROYAL BATHS are dark droned out psych garage rock from san fran.

hypnotic like the early the oh sees records.   and like the crystal stilts, they're the flipside to the sunny AM radio optimism of much of the neo-garage scene......

and they've listened to as many psych records as the night beats, so the royal baths know how to make you swoon with a eerie druggy haze.........

"Royal Baths haven't had it easy. In a city where garage rock reigns supreme and new bands form and fade away with the blink of an eye, it's tough to get noticed unless your songs can satisfy punk rock attention spans. But with four- to six-minute tracks and slow, methodical drum beats, Royal Baths have won their way into the hearts of even the most raucous audiences--a testament to both the ability that San Franciscans have to recognize talent when they see it, and also to the incredible music and spectacle that the Royal Baths have created. "The band has its obvious influences--The Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3--but to define them by these comparisons would be to vastly oversimplify their sound. Songwriters Jeremy Cox and Jigmae Baer draw from psychedelic soundscapes; dark, personal, and esoteric subject matter; and a bit of punk's apathetic humor and exigency. They conjure up haunting, reverb-heavy hymns to the degenerate and the broken." --Emily Rose Epstein (SF Weekly, Thrasher Magazine, drummer for Ty Segall)

so you ought to go see ROYAL BATHS in chicago @ the HIDEOUT August 29th.......

and watch out for their double 7 inch split with ty segall coming out on hozac records in the near future.......

(their debut on woodsist "litanies" is also worth looking out for)

rock n roll below.....

john wesley coleman - steal my mind / bad lady goes to jail

JOHN WESLEY COLEMAN plays ramshackle countrified garage rock.....and it's fun catchy drinking / hanging out music.....

he reminds me of the GIBSON BROS and the COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS..... taking rock n roll back to its simple country / blues roots......  with a bit of weirdo indie / psych twist......

john plays in the GOLDEN BOYS and is from that very riotous fertile austin texas music scene, but his solo records definitely stand out from his other band and in the overcrowded underground rock scene....

maybe it's because JOHN WESLEY COLEMAN plays garage rock as if he doesn't care that you and two other friends are the only ones that love it.......

TERMINAL BOREDOM had this to say about his STEAL MY MIND LP......(certified PR records)
"This thing has subtly become one of my most-listened to LPs of recent vintage somehow. Not sure how it happened.  It's a real sidler. A go-to record for whenyou're just sitting around drinking and smoking cigarettes with a couple pals. It pulls up a chair along with you and takes a nip and a drag and gets comfortable. Sort of what you'd expect from a guy who covers Warren Zevon and Lester Bangs.  Boozy and sun-baked rock-n-roll Americano playedloose and gutsy. I think "Steal My Mind" is actually stealing a J.Mascis guitar hook. Actually reminds one of the Meat Pups in passages and surprisingly poppy in a rough-n-tumble way. What I wanted Golden Boys to sound like a lot of times. "Bad Lady" is the perfect combo of sax, beer and shitkicking. Country-singed and essentially turkey-free. "Tonight" opens with throbbing style and "Liqour Store" closes the first side with what I can only call completely stoned Seventies pop-rock. Depressing at times, yet upliftingly so in some strange way. I'm going to get a lot of use out of this LP over the summer. I can already smell the warm dusky breezewafting through the yard, perfumed by the smell of the earlier BBQ and the beginning of a campfire, me, my bros, my dog, a cooler full of beer and the untapped evening waiting to unfold.   Great fucking record, no bullshit."

REVOLVER has this to say about his BAD LADY GOES TO JAIL LP......(GONER records)
Who is John Wesley Coleman? He describes himself as “garbagecollector, golden boy.” Those four words might fit him best.Coleman currently makes pizzas in Austin, Texas, lives in weirdterritory, and is part of an invisible, non-scene made up of his otherAustin band Golden Boys, North Carolina’s Spider Bags and Memphis’ Limes—all groups with their own takes on sprawling, psychedelic,country-tinged rock. The artists he covers, largely street-levelcommentators of life below the poverty line, are telling; on his lastalbum, Steal My Mind, he did Lester Bangs and Warren Zevon songs;this time, it’s Nikki Sudden. Of course, a few years back he released acompletely blasted version of George Michael’s “Faith” that was seenas a piss-take but actually spoke to Wes’ mindset.Coleman has been compared to Lou Reed, Mr. Bangs, DanielJohnston and even Pavement, who adopted some of the spaciousnessof country life after their initial spizzle grotted out. But whowants to hear Pavement now? Owning cars that don’t break downmakes one complacent, and luckily Coleman hasn’t had to deal withthat yet. Hanging out at bus stops gives the man with eyes a whole lotof material to work with.  Bad Lady Goes to Jail covers a whole variety of desires, from Coleman’s desire for police to stop assaulting him to the desire to dance with his woman, to the less-specific “Something in My Brain Wants Something.” To balance the wanderingheart, he also offers more mundane observations in songs like theself-explanatory “Christians Drive Like Shit” and “My Friend Dan,”a straight celebration of one of his buddies.  There’s a glorious shimmer that runs through Coleman’s sometimes ramshackle music, a graceful melding of enthusiastic melodies and a rushed instrumental attack that frames off-beat lyrics sung by someone who can find moments of excitement in some pretty unlikely situations. Instead of living in the gutter and looking at the stars, he’s living in the gutter and looking at the crazy people stumbling down the street. And loving it!

nothing people - soft crash / late night

NOTHING PEOPLE are a mysterious band......

they never seem to tour or garner any press, yet they release the most amazing psych garage records, that maybe only people who work in record stores ever get around to listening to......

from deep in the heart of northern california, NOTHING PEOPLE make some dark hypnotic psychedelic noise that is equal parts garage, post punk and prog rock.......

suicide, television, roxy music, spaceman 3, 13th floor elevators all come to mind......

but if i had to promote a show, i'd love to put them on a bill with the wooden shjips, disappears and cave......

SS RECORDS (home of some good strange avant rock) has put out three lps of theirs so far, with a fourth on its way later this year, and they also have singles out on permanent and hozac records, which is a stamp of approval for me........

everyone of their lps is worth repeated spins.......and quite unlike anything else out there.....

so grab LATE NIGHT (2009) here......

and grab SOFT CRASH (2010) here.....

and watch below......(live footage of the NOTHING PEOPLE is hard to come by)
